PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
7 Ways to Avoid a Malpractice Case Before it Starts

Here are seven practical, systems-minded ways practice leaders can lower malpractice risk without turning every visit into defensive medicine.

7) Respond early and credibly when something goes wrong

Many lawsuits are fueled by silence, defensiveness, or inconsistent messaging after an adverse event. Practices should not improvise. Have a written response plan that includes rapid fact-gathering, a consistent point of contact for the patient/family, timely communication, and a pathway to resolution. AHRQ’s PSNet overview of the CANDOR tool kit and related guidance on responding to patient safety events can help leaders build a policy that supports transparency while reducing long-term legal exposure.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
How to Minimize the Risk of an IRS Audit

A number of tax audits result from preventable mistakes. Here are the five most common audit red flags—and what to do to avoid them.

2. Large swings in income

Individuals whose income fluctuates significantly from one tax year to the next can also find themselves in the IRS' sights. This can be the case for those who are self-employed or own a business. Big changes in income are a huge red flag for the IRS because they sometimes signal underreported income, either in the current year or in previous years.

What to do

Consider including notes or an explanation with your tax filing if there are large fluctuations in your expenses or income from year to year. For example, if your business income plunged because you lost a large account, you'll want the IRS to take that into consideration when determining whether an audit is warranted. If you file electronically, most tax software allows you to add supplemental documentation and schedules to help explain your situation.

SOLE PURPOSE BY SAVANNAH SANTIAGO, DPM
Making the Most of Cadaver Lab

Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:

9.  Conclusion

Cadaver lab isn’t glamorous. It’s late, it’s cold, and it comes at the end of a day when you’ve already given so much. But it’s also one of the rare spaces in residency where the pressure fades, and learning can happen without consequence. Here, every imperfect throw, misplaced incision, and repeated attempt quietly shapes the surgeon you’re becoming.

Progress doesn’t always look like confidence in the OR—it often looks like staying late in a lab, tired but curious, practicing until something finally clicks. The hours you spend here don’t just build technical skill; they build the kind of quiet discipline that defines good surgeons.

CODING & BILLING Q&As FROM CODINGHELPLINE.COM
Query:  Medical Decision-Making (MDM) and E/M?

Providers often document future options/opinions, but do they really count as items that could happen to the patient and elevate the risk? In the AMA grid, isn't risk for MDM about the significance of the options on the table and the responsibility attached to the final choice?

Codinghelpline com Subscriber

Response from Codinghelpline.comTo answer these questions, we need to know what the AMA Means by “Risk”. Using the AMA grid, these are thoughts about risk of management decisions. It is not just the disease itself nor is it just future theoretical possibilities. We often see a doctor document "I discussed the indications, risks, possible complications and outcomes." This type of statement is not meeting the mark; it is minimal and not establishing the seriousness of the risk.

It has meant: The significance of the options seriously on the table and the responsibility tied to choosing among them. So, risk equals “how serious was the decision written and thought out not just stated like above”.

Auditors typically ask: Was this option medically reasonable at this visit?

1. Was it meaningfully considered?
2. Did it influence the final plan?
3. Is the documentation specific enough to show real decision-making?

If yes → it can support higher MDM risk.
If no → it does not elevate risk.

David Freedman, DPM, Silver Spring, MD
