PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
NY Podiatrist Discusses Proprioceptive Training

“Proprioceptive training is an essential element of the rehabilitation process. Not only can it lead to an increase in strength and mobility, but more importantly, it can drastically reduce the risk of reinjury,” says  Mohammad Rimawi, DPM, a Board Qualified Foot and ankle surgeon in New York City.

Dr. Mohammad Rimawi

Similarly, barefoot training may help build the strength in your intrinsic foot muscles, an under-rated way to help injury-proof your body. “Under the proper supervision, barefoot training may lead to an increase in balance and proprioception,” says Dr. Rimawi.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Key Steps to Mitigating Your Cyber Risk - Part 2

Continuing cyber attacks on healthcare providers emphasize the need for medical practices of all sizes to make cybersecurity an essential part of their business. Here are seven steps to strengthen your practice’s cyber security position.

2. Secure your systems - Unprotected systems and outdated programs and software are frequent points of attacks for cyber criminals. To safeguard your systems:
  • Install antivirus and anti-malware software to scan email attachments for viruses and your system for malware.
  • Install a firewall to protect your network by monitoring and controlling the incoming and outgoing data streams.
  • Regularly update your programs and software. Promptly install all software updates since these often contain security patches addressing vulnerabilities discovered since the last update.
  • Encrypt your data. Several readily available programs allow you to encrypt a select group of files, or for a more secure option, your entire hard drive.
  • Regularly back up your data to a secure cloud platform, an external hard drive, or to both. Backups will enable you to recover your data in the event it is damaged, lost, stolen, or held hostage with ransomware.

Dr. William (Bill) Meharry Myers, 99, made his transition on February 16, 2019 at Inspired Living in Bradenton. William earned his Doctor of Surgical Chiropody (Podiatry) degree in 1948 from the Ohio College of Chiropody in Cleveland, OH.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2

I had the pleasure of knowing this gentleman in his later years. I watched him operate on a 12 year old IDDM patient who had mosaic verruca bilaterally on almost the entire plantar surfaces about 6 years ago. He did not prep the foot, but cut the heel pad to the fat layer and turned it around and sutured it back on the foot with the plantar side down. He dressed it without any topical antibiotic.

Three weeks later, he had the young man come in to show me what the surgical site looked like. The verruca on both feet were gone. It was not his first line of treatment, but was used for resistant verruca that had failed multiple other treatments. I admit I must have gasped when I saw him do the procedure, and later was discussing it with a dermatologist friend of mine who said, "I use that technique often for resistant warts." It is an interesting concept to make the body build up its own immune response. No, I have not used it, as I cannot say this is a standard of care my insurance would defend .

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM ARTICLES)
From: John L. Trench III, DPM

I was appalled to read Dr. Alan Sherman's guest editorial in the January 2019 issue of Podiatry Management. His proposal, that only 20% of the profession be trained in "advanced surgery", while the remaining 80% be consigned to podiatric medicine and "minor surgery", is nothing new. Nor is it anything the majority of the profession, or our patients, want or need.

This proposal is just a rehash of an attempt made in the late 1980s and the early 1990s to strip surgery from the majority of our profession and to make it the sole, very lucrative province of a minority, with the majority of us relegated to...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS)
From: Tom Silver, DPM

I have found that the best way to achieve parity is to become "the specialist" in foot and ankle care whom the allopathic physicians in our area know and trust with their patients’ foot and ankle care. This requires a) constant marketing to let them know who we are and what we do, b) constant nurturing of the relationships we make with individual practitioners and group practices, c) striving to provide foot and ankle care that is far superior to their fellow allopathic physicians so that there is no reason for them to send these patients anywhere else and d) striving to treat the patients they refer (as well as all other patients) in a manner they are "not accustomed to" from most allopathic physicians.
