PODIATRIC PRODUCTS AND SERVICES IN THE NEWS |
Bako Diagnostics to Publish Monthly Malignancy Diagnosis Reports
Bako Diagnostics has announced that it will publish a new monthly public service announcement titled, “Monthly Malignancy Diagnosis Report” that will highlight the number of neoplasms diagnosed by their laboratory during the previous month. Bako Diagnostics collects, analyzes, studies, and shares their findings with the profession. The incidence of lower extremity skin cancer represents an often overlooked and understudied disease. During the month of January 2018, Bako diagnosed 92 carcinomas, 22 melanomas, and 5 sarcoma/lymphomas from specimens submitted to their laboratory.
|
Dr. William Scherer |
“This report represents the first of many partnership services Bako will develop with the podiatric medical community over the next year as our team of podiatric medical consultants collaborate with the collective intelligence of referring podiatrists to analyze their comprehensive database of over two million lower extremity pathology specimens already submitted,” said William Scherer, DPM, Senior Podiatric Medical Advisor for Bako Diagnostics.

PHARMACEUTICAL NEWS |
FDA Warning on Clarithromycin and Risk for Heart Problems and Death
The FDA has issued an advisory urging caution in prescribing clarithromycin (eg., Biaxin) to patients with heart disease because of increased risk for heart problems or death. The warning is based on a review of findings from a 10-year study of patients with coronary heart disease (CHD).
Clarithromycin is used for many infections of the sinuses, skin, and lungs, among others. The FDA recommends that healthcare practitioners know these possible risks for their patients with heart disease and consider other antibiotics.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
How to Combat Negative Reviews - Part 3
Over time, reviews from happy patients say more than the one or two bad reviews that may be posted. And, don't forget—you can dispute reviews with many websites like Yelp or Google.
Negative reviews that are false should be marked as such. If you can't get it taken down, you can respond. Be sure to remain calm and professional and never reveal anything about the patient's medical situation, as that could be a HIPAA violation.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) |
From: Dieter J. Fellner, DPM, Elliot Udell, DPM
I look forward to reading about Dr. Borreggine's contribution to scholarly articles and research findings. I can think of a hundred and more reasons why American articles are moribund.
Dieter J. Fellner, DPM, NY, NY
Dr. Borreggine is asking a very important question and we as a profession need to know the answer, no matter how painful that answer might be. Could it be that we podiatrists are not doing the research and producing quality papers or are we sending our papers to non-podiatric journals?
The ones that can and should answer these questions are the editors of our journals. Only when Dr. Borreggine's question is answered by those who know the answers, can we as a profession take the appropriate long- and short-term actions to reverse this trend.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

RE: Anthem Agrees to Fully Rescind Proposed Modifier 25 Policy
From: Michael Levi, DPM, Lloyd Smith, DPM
Thank you Frank Kase. I've been lucky enough to have known you for over 35 years. It doesn't surprise me that you were able to overturn Blue Cross reimbursements of EM codes. You are a tenacious negotiator - a credit to our profession. I applaud your hard work. I believe if this problem would not have been overturned, it would have been the beginnings of other reductions in our reimbursements. Thank you Frank and the late Harry Goldsmith.
Michael Levi, DPM, Santa Monica, CA
The success of this policy change is hard to appreciate. Dr. Kase is a podiatric legend. He is tenacious and dedicated. He worked with many DPMs from APMA and CPMA to others. He worked with CMA and AMA. He made this happen. Some of us, me included, played a small part in this effort. Harry Goldsmith was an intimate player. His wisdom will be missed.
When I see these kinds of successes, I hope all American DPMs will realize that without APMA, absolutely none of these efforts would ever succeed. Join APMA. Join your state APMA affiliate and realize what your dues dollars pay for.
Lloyd Smith, DPM, Newton, MA
