PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Exercise Today – for a Healthy Tomorrow: MD Podiatrist

Mikel Daniels, DPM, President and Chief Medical Officer at WeTreatFeet Podiatry, Baltimore, USA, says, As we age, we all enter the ‘use it or lose it’ phase of life. If you don’t use it now, you won’t be able to do it later.” A strong sense of balance is the foundation of independence in later life. U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 1 in 4 older adults has a fall each year - with 10% of those falls resulting in a fracture. Dr. Daniels says, “Balance training can keep you upright and independent.”

Dr. Mikel Daniels

“When weightlifting, use heavier lifts with fewer reps. But go slow - use light weights and perfect your form first, then build up gradually. Stick to 10-30 minutes twice weekly for several months to turn back the clock on strength loss,” says Dr. Daniels. “Sneak 15-30 seconds stretches as ‘movement snacks’ during TV breaks or while the kettle boils. Breaking them up is way more doable than one big session,” he adds. Finally, “post-session, grab a quick protein snack like milk, nuts, or hummus on crackers. These allow you to lock in gains. But be careful if kidneys or diabetes are factors for you.”

PODIATRISTS AND HEALTHCARE ADVOCACY
Congress Launches Congressional Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Caucus

The bipartisan event brought together physicians, patient advocates, and lawmakers to discuss current research, treatment, and policy solutions for PAD, a disease affecting over 10 million Americans. The event featured members of the PAD Alliance, a coalition of leading medical societies working to address PAD: the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI), the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR), and the Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC).

Dr. David Alper (2nd to the right of podium)

David Alper, DPM (APMA) a member of the panel, stated, "Podiatrists know all too well the strong value of detecting and reacting early when symptoms of circulation breakdown are seen—and all too often are the ones to remove toes and feet on people who did not have to receive this result, if only regular screening for PAD, especially in diabetics, were available and occurred. Availability and coverage for annual foot screenings for patients with diabetes and PAD will save limbs, lives, and healthcare dollars—and needs to be part of the medical landscape.”

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
TX Podiatrist Highlights Spring Surge in Heel Pain and Sports Injuries

As spring sports and outdoor activities ramp up across Frisco and the greater Collin County area, local podiatrist Dean Kim, DPM is seeing an increase in patients experiencing heel pain, stress injuries, and overuse conditions related to increased activity levels. “Many patients come in this time of year with heel pain that started gradually,” said Dr. Kim. “They may have ignored mild discomfort through the winter, but as activity increases, that small issue becomes much more noticeable.”

Dr. Dean Kim

One of the most frequent diagnoses this season is plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the band of tissue that supports the arch of the foot. It often causes sharp pain in the heel, especially with the first steps in the morning or after long periods of sitting. Patients sometimes assume these symptoms will resolve on their own. However, untreated foot pain can gradually affect walking patterns, leading to knee, hip, or lower back discomfort over time.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
MD Podiatrists Participate in Special Olympics Screening

USFAS Drs. Gene Mirkin, David Grace, and Lee Firestone, with Carol Mirkin, participated in screening Maryland Special Olympic athletes, through their Fit Feet program, at their Winter Games, February 22, 2026, at Wisp Ski Resort, in McHenry, MD.

(L-R) Drs. Gene Mirkin, David Grace and Lee Firestone, with Carol Mirkin

For the medical volunteers, this was more than a screening opportunity. It was a rare and humbling chance to observe unique pathologies, collaborate with peers, and witness firsthand the joy and determination of athletes who compete without limits.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
RNs Can Deliver Some Hospital Services Done by MDs with No Quality Difference

A new Cochrane systematic review suggests that nurses can safely deliver many hospital services traditionally performed by doctors, with outcomes comparable to those achieved by doctors. The research analyzed 82 randomized studies involving more than 28,000 patients across 20 countries, covering both inpatient and outpatient care across multiple specialties.

In some areas, including diabetes care, cancer follow-up, and dermatology, nurse-led services were linked to better patient outcomes. Expanding nurse-led care could help address doctor shortages, reduce waiting times, and improve access to routine hospital care.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
7 Ways to Avoid a Malpractice Case Before it Starts

Here are seven practical, systems-minded ways practice leaders can lower malpractice risk without turning every visit into defensive medicine.

6) Build reliability around diagnosis: safety nets, second looks and “close the loop” referrals

Missed or delayed diagnosis is a persistent malpractice driver, and many contributing factors are systems issues: follow-up gaps, poor tracking of referrals or lack of clarity on who owns “next steps.” Use diagnostic safety nets: explicit return precautions, scheduled rechecks for unresolved symptoms, tracking of referrals until consult notes return and a mechanism for re-review when the story does not fit. AHRQ’s PSNet primer on diagnostic errors frames how diagnostic failures arise from both cognition and system design, which is exactly where administrators can help.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
How to Minimize the Risk of an IRS Audit

A number of tax audits result from preventable mistakes. Here are the five most common audit red flags—and what to do to avoid them.

1. Missing income

Income derived from regular wages automatically have taxes withheld, and employers report those taxes to the IRS. However, taxes aren't normally withheld from nonwage income—including business income, capital gains, dividends, interest, rental income, and royalties—making it more prone to discrepancies and examination by the IRS.

What to do

Your financial firm will send 1099 forms for capital gains, dividends, and interest, which must be accurately accounted for on your return. For income that doesn't pass through an intermediary, such as business or rental income, you're required to document and report it yourself. Underreported income is often due to a missing or out-of-date 1099, inaccurate accounting practices, or both. Whatever your sources of income, you need to ensure your return reflects them all.

SOLE PURPOSE BY SAVANNAH SANTIAGO, DPM
Making the Most of Cadaver Lab

Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:

8.  There Is No Shame in the Basics

If you mess up a running subcutaneous suture in a case, you can bet you’ll be practicing it in cadaver lab. Honestly, it’s even harder to do on cadaver tissue—but that challenge only makes you better.

Practice hammertoes every lab. Your goal is for them to become like free throws in basketball—something you’ve practiced so many times that you can replicate it with precision every single time.

There’s absolutely no shame in practicing the small, simple things. In fact, that’s where real skill is built. There’s a reason so many surgeons dislike “dainty” toe work—it’s hard, detailed, and unforgiving. Mastering the basics takes patience and repetition, but it’s what sets great surgeons apart from good ones.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Stefan Feldman, DPM
From: Rich Blake, DPM and the KevinRoot Medical staff

Today, all of us here at KevinRoot Medical are mourning the death of a great individual, Dr. Stefan Feldman. Stefan was part of the KevinRoot Medical family for almost 20 years, beginning as one of our early clients in 2007, just months after we opened our doors. Over the years, that professional relationship grew into something much deeper. A mere 3 years ago, and almost to the day, I was introduced to Dr. Feldman, and we became instant friends. We shared weekly meetings and collaborated on the medical education for the clients of KevinRoot Medical.

Dr. Stefan Feldman

I knew early on of his health struggles, which he never let bring down that incredible energy and passion for what he did. I am so sorry for his loss and my greatest sympathy goes out to his family. May he rest in peace, and find strength from his love that he poured out to you all.

How do you capture the essence of a man in a few words? For one, his love for...

Editor's note: Dr. Blake's extended-length letter can be read here.
