PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
3 Ways to Improve Patient Communications - Part 3

Most practitioners are proficient at communicating in lay terms to clarify common medical terminology and idioms. But there are other things some doctors inadvertently do that can compromise their credibility. Here are three easy adjustments you can make to ensure you’re coming across loud and clear.

3. Call patients by name - Excellent medical communication relies on one’s ability to engage with patients using considerate language. Not only does that demonstrate respect, it also honors their position, both intellectually and in life. The foundation of that respect begins with how you greet them. Not all patients appreciate being addressed with a term of endearment like hon, dear, sweetie, love, or old fella. While some people find such terms charming, most grit their teeth every time they hear them. Here’s a good rule of thumb: if you wouldn’t address someone by one of those monikers in an e-mail, it’s best not to call them that to their face. Instead, refer to people by the name that appears on their chart or in your appointment calendar. Better yet, ask your patients how they prefer to be addressed and make a note of it.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Podiatry-Specific Insurance Billing and Collection Services

I would like to get recommendations from the profession on podiatry-specific insurance billing and collection services, specifically the pro and cons. Also I’d like to know what percentage of procedure codes are being rejected and has this gone up in the past few years?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Nikos Panacos, DPM

Dr. Nikos Panacos passed away on February 20, 2019. Dr. Panacos received his podiatric medical degree in Podiatry from the Illinois College of Podiatry (now known as the William Scholl School of Podiatry). After graduation, he practiced podiatry for over 40 years in Zion, IL. Dr. Panacos was a pioneer in his profession doing residency and internship before it was ever required and helped his profession to be accepted in the hospital setting.

He also published several scientific papers in his profession, one called "The Panacos Graft" and another called the "Panacos Neurectomy". He also served on the Podiatry Committee for the State of Illinois Licensing Board, and was board certified through the American Board of Lower Extremity Surgery.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Edward Cohen, DPM

I would approach this problem of the second ray the same way I would treat a first ray HAV deformity. You could do an Isham-Reverdin osteotomy (an oblique medial wedge osteotomy just proximal to the metatarsal hardware. Using a fluoroscan, the screw can be bypassed and the osteotomy made just proximal to the screw. You can mark it off before you start the surgery with the fluoroscan.

You could also do an osteotomy proximal to the toe implant to bring the second toe in a more medial direction. These two procedures should give you a straight toe, correcting the adducted second metatarsal and lateral deviated second toe. An alternative correction to the Isham-Reverdin osteotomy would be the Katzen-Wilson osteotomy to correct the adducted second metatarsal.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Richard Silverstein, DPM

I have been utilizing Axolotl products for a year and a half now with great success. "Intriguing time" indeed sir! I commonly refer to this point and time in medicine as a "regenerative boom" because we are at the beginning stages of literally transforming the way we treat our patients. The reach is limitless from inflammatory conditions to wound care.

Over this time period, I have injected over 75 patients with Axobiofluid A (A is for ambient temperature). The volume of injection ranges...

Disclosure: I sit on the medical advisory board for Axolotl Biologix.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS)
From: David Davidson, DPM

Podiatrist or podiatric surgeon? Interesting question. I have been a podiatrist since the time of Methuselah. I graduated from podiatry school prior to the establishment of podiatric surgical residencies and certainly before specialty fellowships were available.

I graduated with the idea that I would be a generalist – a podiatrist taking care of all foot/ankle needs of the patient. And yes, I was taught...
