PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES
Patient Education Key to Optimizing Care for Diabetics: DC Podiatrist

Foot complications such as amputation and foot ulceration are common consequences of diabetic neuropathy and peripheral arterial disease (PAD). These complications have been identified as major causes of morbidity and disability in people with diabetes. “Early recognition and management of risk factors for foot complications is critical,” says Paul J. Kim, DPM, MS. “Efforts to identify and treat these complications early in the disease course can prevent or delay adverse outcomes.”

Dr. Paul J. Kim

“Patient education on diabetes and associated foot conditions is a key component to optimizing care,” says Dr. Kim. “Patients need to be educated about their risk factors and how to appropriately manage them. At-risk individuals must understand the implications of their symptoms, the importance of daily foot monitoring and care, and how to select the most appropriate footwear.”

HOSPITAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
TX Podiatrist Opens New Skills Learning Lab

Dr. Gary Lepow, Director of the Podiatric Residency Program, opened the new SJMC Skills Learning Lab on February 13, 2014. Dr. Lepow, along with the support of Administration, has been determined to not only develop a Skills Learning Lab, but to utilize hospital space (the old ICU) which was closed years ago and collecting dust.  Dr. Lepow saw the space had a high ceiling, lots of light, including a row of windows, and room to expand. With his vision and Richard Steele’s (Director of Facilities) assistance in remodeling, the first lab was sponsored by Tornier Orthopedics.

Dr. Gary Lepow

Although the Skills Learning Lab was opened to support the Podiatric Residency Program, Dr. Lepow is encouraging any surgical service to contact him for possible use. Long range plans include expanding the facility to include an adjacent space for classroom lectures and IT for broadcasting and recording. Several more labs have already been booked by other international medical device companies.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS
Bret Ribotsky: What is the first thing you want to change about the education system in podiatry?

Dr. Albert Armstrong

Albert Armstrong: The one thing I would change if I could, and maybe I can, is the concept that every podiatrist needs to be a surgeon. There is more to podiatry than surgery - wound care, rheumatology, and dermatology, to name a few. Even though one may have skills as a surgeon, there are many aspects of our profession that allow you to do whatever you enjoy. In my practice, I do not do surgery; I like radiology. Many people send me patients for diagnostic ultrasound.

Physician Compare Website Adds Quality Scores

The CMS is working to make its Physician Compare website more relevant to patients by adding quality measures related to the treatment of diabetes and heart disease for 66 group practices and 141 accountable care organizations. The move comes as consumer awareness of physician-rating websites is growing.

The quality scores were developed from data generated from the groups that participated in the CMS Physician Quality Reporting System's Group Reporting Option and the ACOs participating in the Medicare Shared Savings Program, according to a CMS fact sheet. These groups and ACOs also were given 30 days to review their data for accuracy.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: Joel Lang, DPM

I recently had expensive dental procedures, of course not covered by any insurance, and my dentist offered me - and signed me up for Care Credit. The company was very nice. I was able to pay off the bill in monthly payments over one year with no interest. I could have used it as a revolving credit card also at no interest had there been additional procedures, but there was no need.

So the answer to your questions is: It is useful for patients with big bills who would prefer (or were not able) to pay it off all at once - with a no interest benefit.

Joel Lang, DPM (retired), Cheverly, MD, langfinancial@verizon.net

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Joe Boylan  DPM

I did not pay my staff of six for three snow days so far this winter here in Northern NJ. One employee took advantage of my offer to do some work from home. The same employee presented to work in the office on one of the snow days and worked the phones, etc. I believe providing a paid snow day policy in a small business is not customary. I believe the provided wages, vacation time, 401k, health insurance, bonuses, etc. exceed the non-inclusion of a paid snow day policy.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Lawrence Sturm, DPM

According to the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median wage of a podiatrist in 2012 was $116,440. This is a much more reliable and accurate measure than the mean when there are many outliers in the data. To thine own self, be true.
