APMA STATE COMPONENT NEWS
NYSPMA White Paper Shows Podiatrists Lower Costs and  Improve Quality of Life

A research-based study released by the New York State Podiatric Medical Association shows that incorporating podiatric care may decrease healthcare costs among obese patients by $1.1 billion and up to $510 million for patients with diabetes. What’s more, the survey revealed that podiatry services and treatment may decrease opioid dispensing (28 percent) among persons with a back- and podiatric-related pain diagnoses, decrease falls (36 percent) among elderly and at-risk populations, and reduce hospitalizations relating to obesity (19 percent) and diabetes (37 percent).

Dr. Paul Liswood

“Podiatric intervention is a key component of effectively managing chronic conditions and improving quality of life for New Yorkers,” said Dr. Paul J. Liswood, NYSPMA president-elect and Brooklyn-based podiatrist who actively advocates about podiatry’s critical role in preventative care. “As New York podiatrists, it is our mission to educate New Yorkers about how the expansion of podiatry’s role in the New York healthcare landscape can positively impact the whole person while reducing healthcare costs.”

HEALTH AND TECHNOLOGY
Risk of Implanted Medical Devices is No Reason to Panic: CA Podiatrist

Medical devices have been targets of hacking attacks for over a decade, physicians note in a paper published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The increasing popularity of devices using software and wireless communications has created a rising risk that hackers might re-program devices to make them work improperly, interrupt the relay of information needed for doctors to monitor patients remotely, or prematurely drain the batteries, cardiologists write. “Like with so many rapidly evolving technologies, we haven’t even conceived many of the ultimate advantages of connected implanted devices,” said Dr. David Armstrong, Professor of Surgery at the University of Southern California.

Dr. David Armstrong

“Certainly, the ability for a patient and his or her clinician to monitor status continuously will yield many more opportunities to personalize care and will also likely reduce time to treatment of acute or chronic events,” says Armstrong. “There is absolutely no cause for panic,” Armstrong continued. “The added stress from worrying about having your device medjacked likely increases your risk for a heart attack a whole lot more than the risk itself.”

OUTSIDE INTERESTS
It’s All About the Deal: VA Podiatrist Turned Antiques and Collectibles Dealer

The antiques and collectibles business at the corner of Arch Drive and Friedens Church Road is known as the Arch Drive Gallery. Co-owner Doris Shouey, though, thinks it should be called Bob’s Barn because some people mistake the business for an art gallery. But after spending time with podiatrist-turned-store-owner Dr. Bob Shouey for a bit, it’s apparent that Doc’s Deal Den might be more appropriate. That’s because the 69-year-old retired physician said deal making is the reason he opened the business in the first place.

“Years ago my dad said, ‘Well, don’t you have enough money?’” Bob recalled. “And I said, ‘Dad, it isn’t about the money; it’s about the deal.’ “It’s just the deal. And it never matters to me, the money part, as long as I didn’t buy it for a buck and sell it for 10 cents.” Bob said he has flipped houses and land, and he has even bought and sold the fire tower that once sat atop Reddish Knob. But his shop gives him the chance to scratch his deal-making itch on a regular basis.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
How to Combat Negative Reviews - Part 1

As most physicians today know, online reviews can hurt or help a practice. A single disgruntled patient who was made to wait can post about their experience and make it seem like your practice is the model for rudeness and inefficiency. Even worse, patients who don't get what they want from their doctor—whether they need it or not—get angry, and angry people love to vent online.

So what is the best way to react to negative reviews that you feel are not representative of the level of care that you deliver in your practice? As in most things, the best defense is a good offense. Your patients understand the power of the Internet—they read reviews, too. We have discovered that, if you ask them, they will help you make sure you have an army of good reviews posted to drown out the bad.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Weil Osteotomy and Capsulotomy with Tenorrhaphy

I billed a Weil osteotomy with capsulotomy and with tenorrahphy for a 2nd metatarsophalangeal joint. The osteotomy was paid for, but the capsulotomy and tennorhaphy were not. (Codes 28308 and 28270) Any suggestions as to why?

Robert Taylor, DPM, Frisco, TX

Response: When the CCI edits are checked for CPT 28308 and CPT 28270, the procedures are not bundled together. Theoretically, both procedures should be paid by using the appropriate modifier, that modifier being -59. Then why was CPT 28308 paid, but CPT 28270 not paid?

When a lesser metatarsal osteotomy (i.e. Weil osteotomy) is performed, in order to gain access to the surgical site, a capsulotomy of the respective metatarsophalangeal joint needs to be performed. Since the capsulotomy is an integral part of the surgical procedure (CPT 28308: Osteotomy, with or without lengthening, shortening or angular correction, metatarsal; other than first metatarsal, each), the capsulotomy (28270: Capsulotomy; metatarsophalangeal joint, with or without tenorrhaphy, each joint [separate procedure]) is not separately payable.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Jack Ressler, DPM

I cannot give you an accurate answer to that question but I would like to give a little insight into the use of the correct product for cold sterilization of instruments. Several years ago, I was ordering supplies at a SAM convention and saw a product for this purpose. It is called Control 3. I inquired about it with the salesperson and was shocked to find out that Benz-All did not kill a lot of organisms that the Control 3 product did. I have been using this product since that time. Control 3 is sold by the gallon and is used straight without mixing with water.

Yes, it is more expensive than Benz-All, but it is a far superior product.
