INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
New Zealand Podiatrist Cites Hypocrisy in Antibiotic Prescribing Rules
Feet are notoriously the most neglected part of the human body – and now they're causing a professional stink all the way from Tauranga to the corridors of power in Wellington. Podiatrists, the foot doctors, are demanding the right to prescribe antibiotics to us, the patients, to save us time, inconvenience, stress, and above all money, lots of money. Tauranga podiatric surgeon Stefan Edwards says “being nice and gentlemanly about it has passed, and it's time to shout. It's time to cut through the red-tape bull****”.

Strong talk, strong language from the traditionally reserved medical profession. And Stefan is shouting about what he calls: “This bit of nonsense, this bit of hypocrisy.” When we go to the podiatrist with our corns, calluses, ingrown toenails, and fungal infections, they can perform an initial procedure, do an x-ray and give a local anaesthetic – but they cannot prescribe antibiotics, which are crucial to the treatment process.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
VA Podiatrist Co-Chairs Annual Salvation Army Shoe Drive
Saturday morning, the Salvation Army Gym on Ridge Street hosted the annual Shoe Drive. The event is hosted by both local podiatrists and the Salvation Army. Doors opened at 9 A.M. to people who could come and pick up trash bags of needed shoes. The shoes come in from donations all over the area including local businesses, schools, and sponsors. Dr. Bryan Snyder, a local podiatrist and co-chair of the event, says shoes serve as an essential piece of life.

Dr. Bryan Snyder |
Snyder says, "It's a wonderful idea as a charity event. It's good to give back to the community, and we've got a great community here to help out. Feet are the way that we communicate and are in contact with the world, so having a good pair of shoes on can really make or break a day."

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW |
CA Podiatrist Arrested on Drug Charges
A 60-year-old podiatrist was in custody Saturday for alleged prescription fraud. According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, Dr. Randolph Nordyke, of San Diego, was arrested for multiple health and safety code violations on Friday. Investigators explained they recently suspected that Nordyke, who was reportedly retired from his Ventura practice, was falsifying prescriptions in order to feed his own drug addition, and was visiting multiple doctors in Ventura County to obtain prescriptions. A preliminary investigation revealed that he allegedly wrote prescriptions in a former patient’s name for large amounts of Oxycodone. Nordyke is being held on $50,000 at the Ventura County Main Jail for charges including identity theft, unlawfully prescribing controlled substances, forging prescriptions, and burglary.

6 Key Takeaways for ICD-10 Testing - Part 4
Learn Denial Management
At a conference, Lori Logan, senior vice president at the Provider Solutions clearinghouse unit of payer software vendor TriZetto asked an audience of about 150 physician practice administrators how many were knowledgeable about denial management. 20 percent raised their hands. That has to change quickly, she warns, noting that Medicare has said rejections and denials may increase 100-200 percent, and days in accounts receivables could rise 20-40 percent.
A rejection is when a claim is not accepted by an insurer because something is wrong with the claim, she explains; a denial means an insurer has accepted the claim, but the provider gets only partial or no payment for any of a number of reasons, such as the insurer believing some of the charges were not medically necessary.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
Query: Legality of Non-Licensed Practitioner and Medicare Diabetic Shoes
I just recently returned home to visit my parents in NJ, and I am furious. Some gentleman recently rang the doorbell asking for my father, because it was time to pick out my father's new diabetic shoes. After further questioning, apparently this door-to-door salesman (who doesn't have a license/certificate) made an impression of my father's foot, obtained a signed prescription from my father's PCP, and dispensed the shoes all from the comfort of my Dad's living room. When I asked the salesman about his training, he said, "Oh yes, we took a course on how to make impressions," but he denied being a licensed pedorthist. Is this legal? isn't this Medicare fraud? Don't you have to be a licensed professional to make impressions for high-risk diabetic footwear?
