MN Podiatrist Uses Lapiplasty Bunion Procedure
When you think of bunions, a local podiatrist encourages you to think of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. For those outside the field, it’s not, perhaps, an immediately obvious comparison. But for Nathan Sanders, DPM, who practices podiatry and wound care at Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea, it’s a start at explaining how the surgical procedure he’s using to treat bunions corrects at the source of the problem: its base.
|
Dr. Nathan Sanders |
Although the Lapiplasty procedure he’s using has been around for approximately three years, Dr. Sanders said he began seriously working with it last year; he was the first to perform the procedure in Minnesota. According to a listing by Treace Medical Concepts, the company that developed the Lapiplasty procedure technology, he is one of now six in the state trained to perform this specific procedure.

Aussie Podiatrist Discusses Plantar Fasciitis
It used to be thought that heel pain was caused by bruising or bone spurs, but Sydney sports podiatrist Dr. Brenden Brown tells Coach the cause is more straightforward. "Most heel pain is some form of change to the large tendon that travels in the bottom of the foot and up the back of the heel — tendons hate change," says Brown, founder of A Step Ahead Foot + Ankle Care.
|
Dr. Brenden Brown |
Those tendons are your plantar fascia, and they have a fit when you give them something new to do. "The moment you massively change your activity over a short period of time, they get really sore and angry," Brown explains. That activity can range from running on worn-out shoes through more mundane activities.

Aussie Podiatrist Recommends 80/20 Rule for Wearing High Heels
They say fashion is pain - but wearing high heels regularly can actually have serious impacts on your health. From lower back pains and bunions to restricting blood circulation, these are just some of the problems walking in stilettos for hours every day can cause. Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Sydney podiatrist Nicole Reilly revealed how you can wear heels comfortably without hurting your feet.
|
Nicole Reilly |
"We always recommend sticking to the 80/20 rule, where 80 per cent of the time you wear sensible shoes, and keep your highest heels for limited activities," she said. "It really depends on the activity level. If you're working around the desk a lot, stick to lower heels or wear thicker wedges - they're more beneficial than stilettos."

EHRs Do Not Lower Administrative Billing Costs: Study
Electronic health records were supposed to lower administrative costs, but they may not be getting the job done, according to a new study published this week in JAMA. Administrative costs made up as much as a quarter of professional revenue for some patient encounters, according to the study, which focused on a single academic medical center. Researchers attribute much of the high cost to varying contracts between the hospital and health plans and payer as well as varying price schedules.
"After investing more than $30 billion in health IT, we haven't improved the administrative efficiency," said Dr. Kevin Schulman, one of the study authors and the associate director of the Duke Clinical Research Institute. "That was one of the big promises of digitizing records." The researchers could not attribute the high costs to "any significantly wasteful or inefficient efforts" in billing, something they speculate could be due to the fact that the health system uses a single billing organization. Instead, they attribute the costs to differing contracts with payers and price schedules that remain unstandardized.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Common Web Design Mistakes Most Medical Practices Make - Part 5
Here are five medical website design mistakes that can hurt your practice:
5. Not Optimized for Mobile
With the massive increase in the use of tablet devices and smartphones, you would be doing your practice much damage if your website if not designed to adjust to mobile screens and other devices. A responsive website is no longer a trend but a necessity. According to a study, two out of three minutes online is spent on smartphones. Mobile friendliness is one of the most significant Google ranking factors. Without a responsive website design, you will not only be alienating a large number of potential visitors but also risk being fined by Google.
Pro Tip: You can choose from a wide range of mobile-friendly web themes and install plug-ins for optimizing your website for mobile devices.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Repair of Midmark Equipment
After years of reliable service, we recently experienced a power surge that knocked out two Midmark 417 podiatry chairs and our R9 UltraClave. I need a recommendation for a reliable service company for these products in the Philadelphia area.

RE: Best way to Sell a Practice
From: Jack Ressler, DPM
Although this subject has been discussed and debated extensively, the main key that has not been discussed is a good marketing strategy. Spend your time and money in marketing. That is what will get potential buyers. Once you start getting inquiries, you will get a better idea of what your practice is worth. When talking numbers with potential buyers, start out with a price based on a percentage of gross collections. Judging by the interest of potential buyers, you will know if you are in the right ballpark with your asking price. Adjust accordingly if needed.
I started at an asking price of 100% of gross. I ended up selling at 70%. I do not recommend a broker. Not only will you be paying thousands of dollars to the broker, but they will be holding your practice ransom in the fact that they will most likely have you sign an exclusive with them. They will have full control of how and where your practice is advertised. I used the classified section in PM News and it proved very successful. Remember it is read by over 17,000 potential buyers.
Between a website designer and marketing, I spent less than less $4,000 total. Plan a good marketing strategy and you will be well on your way to selling your practice.
Jack Ressler, DPM, Delray Beach, FL
