IL Podiatrist Uses Compression Socks to Treat Plantar Fasciitis

If you've ever experienced plantar fasciitis, you know how agonizing it can be. Plantar fasciitis is treatable. One go-to trick that podiatrists prefer? Compression socks. "We use these regularly for our patients with plantar fasciitis," said Melissa Lockwood, DPM, a podiatrist at Heartland Foot and Ankle Associates in Bloomington, IL.

Dr. Melissa Lockwood

Compressing the plantar fascia "will help with both pain and inflammation of the affected ligament," Dr. Lockwood said.

PUBLISHED PODIATRISTS
FL Podiatrist Published in Journal of Fungi

William Scherer, DPM and Wayne Bakotic, DO are contributing authors with Aditya Gupta, MD for the February 2024 issue of the Journal of Fungi investigating laboratory testing for clinical suspicion of onychomycosis with one of the largest data sets of abnormal toenails ever published. The article, Clinical Diagnosis and Laboratory Testing of Abnormal Appearing Toenails: A Retrospective Assessment of Confirmatory Testing for Onychomycosis in the United States, 2022–2023 concludes that for clinically diagnosed onychomycosis patients, the overall positivity rate was only 59.4%.

Dr. William Scherer

In this retrospective cohort study, they assessed confirmatory laboratory testing results with matching clinical diagnoses with 96,293 nail specimens submitted during a 9-month period from 2022 to 2023. Despite the risk of mis-diagnosis, confirmatory laboratory testing is under-utilized and their results support the use of it for toenail pathology when there is a clinical diagnosis of onychomycosis.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
FL Podiatrist Surrenders License But Avoids Jail in Rape Case

Palm Beach County’s Saul Lipsman was a licensed podiatrist for 52 years, and admitted in August that he’s also a rapist. As of Feb. 6, he’s no longer a licensed podiatrist. Lipsman, 78, relinquished the podiatric physician license he’d held since Feb. 11, 1971. His voluntary surrender was part of his guilty plea to sexual battery on an adult patient, for which he got a five-year probation that began Aug. 31.

FDA NEWS
FDA Approves First Medication to Help Reduce Allergic Reactions to Multiple Foods After Accidental Exposure

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Xolair (omalizumab) injection for immunoglobulin E-mediated food allergy in certain adults and children 1 year or older for the reduction of allergic reactions (Type I), including reducing the risk of anaphylaxis, that may occur with accidental exposure to one or more foods. Patients who take Xolair must continue to avoid foods they are allergic to. Xolair is intended for repeated use to reduce the risk of allergic reactions and is not approved for the immediate emergency treatment of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 6% of people in the United States in 2021 had a food allergy and exposure to the particular food(s) to which they are allergic can lead to potentially life-threatening allergic reactions (i.e., anaphylaxis). There is currently no cure for food allergy. Xolair is a drug (in the class of drugs called monoclonal antibodies) that binds to immunoglobulin E (IgE), the antibody type that triggers allergic reactions, and blocks IgE from binding to its receptors.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
7 Ways Telehealth Can Help Your Practice

The healthcare industry is witnessing a remarkable transformation in the way medical care is delivered. Telehealth, a concept once considered futuristic, has now become an integral part of the healthcare landscape, in large part due to its wide use and adoption during the pandemic. Despite its revolutionizing impact on patient access and streamlining practice operations, telehealth remains under-used.

6. Patient Covenience

The convenience of telehealth appointments cannot be overstated. Patients can consult with their doctors from the comfort of their homes, eliminating travel time, waiting room discomfort, and associated stress. These patients report positive experiences on evaluation surveys.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE)
From: Joel Feder, DPM

I'm sure Dr. Shaper did not mean to have a finger's length of room at the toe box of an athletic shoe. Unless she likes to treat tripping injuries.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS)
From: Jeffrey Trantalis, DPM

“Ice cup massage” to the heel for plantar fasciitis is not the only location to utilize this method. It is very effective for sports medicine injuries. Muscle and tendon injuries respond to this method prior to stretching. Achilles tendinitis comes to mind as an ideal place for this method of treatment. At the end of the day, after stretching, an ice pack is utilized to calm daily inflammation. Having used this method for over 40 years, I have made it a must in my practice.
