APMWA Announces 33rd Annual Student Writing Competition
The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 33rd Annual Student Writing Competition.
-
All papers MUST be non-technical in nature. Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.
-
There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.
-
First prize one thousand dollars ($1,000), Second prize seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750) Third prize five hundred dollars ($500) sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.

FL Podiatrist May Begin Using Botox for Plantar Fasciitis
For the last several years, Peter McAllister, MD, one of the world’s leading authorities on Botox’s therapeutic uses, has been using it to treat one of runners’ most common complaints, plantar fasciitis. For the past eight years, Florida podiatrist and podiatric surgeon Adam D. Perler, DPM has extensively used amniotic tissue to treat plantar fasciitis. Harvested from umbilical cord and afterbirth material, the amniotic tissue is injected into the damaged area, jumpstarting the body’s own healing process. Because the treatment relies on temporary inflammation, patients may at first actually feel worse as the injury heals, at least for a few weeks.

But with Botox, there’s typically no pain involved. After reading studies [on Botox], Dr. Perler has been intrigued by the possibilities, and says he may begin using the treatment in his practice, especially in patients who may have an overlying nerve problem in addition to the typical plantar fasciitis.

GA Bill to Expand Scope of Practice Advances in House
HB 330, authored by Rep. Rick Williams (R-Milledgeville), amends Titles 14 and 43 to address the practice of podiatry. The bill allows podiatrists to organize and join a professional association with other physicians. It also permits them to perform surgery under conscious sedation in a licensed hospital or ambulatory surgery center.
The bill also changes the definition of “podiatrist” to mean a doctor of the foot, ankle, or leg. Previously, the definition only covered the foot and leg. This bill was referred to the House Health and Human Services Committee.

3 Ways to Improve Patient Communications - Part 2
Most practitioners are proficient at communicating in lay terms to clarify common medical terminology and idioms. But there are other things some doctors inadvertently do that can compromise their credibility. Here are three easy adjustments you can make to ensure you’re coming across loud and clear.
2. Monitor the tone of your correspondence - If you’re feeling misunderstood by colleagues and patients, the tone of your electronic communication could be to blame. Just like our personalities, our correspondence has its own character. While e-mail itself hasn’t really changed much since its inception, our expectations about immediacy have. Text and direct messages have only added to the accelerated cadence of communication. A lack of time coupled with a shortage of patience can lead to an abundance of terseness. We can modify our own habits by taking more time to think through what we have to share and how we want to share it. Consistently including salutations, bullet points, short paragraphs, and clear expectations enhances the tone of e-mail conversations dramatically.

I have to assume that many of you have clicked on the PM News advertisement for Regenerative Treatment. The company is based out of Arizona. Have any of you had any experience with the injectable form of this product including results, using with or without PRP, with or without ultrasound guidance, patient interest, etc.? This is a very intriguing time for all of us and a modality such as this, if successful, could change the way we treat many injuries, acute and mostly chronic. I curiously await your feedback.

Dr. Sullivan, my experience has been good with the percutaneous metatarsal osteotomy compared to the the Weil which I did for years. Recently, Henry, et al. published a study that compared the classic fixated Weil osteotomy with a non-fixated percutaneous distal percutaneous metatarsal osteotomy (DMMO). The percutaneous DMMO procedure is an extra-articular osteotomy without internal fixation. Thomas Bauer also published findings on the non-fixated DMMO with more than 150 patients. All but a few patients had complete resolve in their symptoms and no non-union.
What has been documented is post-op pain and swelling up to 3 months after DMMO. The surgical recovery is longer after DMMO than...

When minimally invasive surgery is performed by a properly trained surgeon, using appropriate technique and instrumentation on an appropriate, compliant patient, there is no reason to expect a non-union. I used the words "chances are" because no guarantees can be made regarding outcomes prior to performing foot surgery and PM News is not a court of law. Perhaps Dr. Sullivan uses different words to indicate the same.
By performing a non-fixated lesser metatarsal osteotomy, I would not be leaving the lateral movement of the metatarsal head up to chance. I would be leaving it up to Wollf's Law, which states that "bone in a healthy person or animal will adapt to the loads under which it is placed." It seems pretty obvious from this particular case that fixating an osteotomy does not guarantee a good outcome, and, in this situation, may have contributed to a bad one.

If I didn’t have a grasp of the calendar, I would think the recent PM News news item, “Canadian Foot Doctor to be Featured in New A&E Series” was published on April 1st and was one of Barry Block’s famous April Fools jokes. But The Toe Bro YouTube videos are about its kind publisher, Toronto chiropodist Jonathan Tomines, about which it is said, “there is nothing he won’t clip, slice, or scoop until suffering is a thing of the past”, reveals yet another side of being a podiatrist. This case series stands in contrast and counterpoint to the discussion we’ve been having regarding the identity of podiatrists vis a vis the part that foot surgery plays in our practices.
Yet, this series does dramatize the variety of encounters Tomines has with his patients, with some humor added in, and now the show has been picked by the A&E network and I assume, is going from these 2-16 minute short videos to a long format video. It’s all chiropody, which is another part of podiatry, as surgery is a part, and infectious disease, and dermatology, and sports medicine are all important parts. This harkens back to Elaine and Jerry Seinfeld bickering about whether Elaine’s podiatrist boyfriend is really a doctor.
