PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE |
CO Podiatrist Discusses Ankle Sprains
One of the most common foot-related problems doctors see in Craig, Colorado is an ankle sprain, which occurs when ankle ligaments tear. "It's very common here due to sports injuries, farming, outdoor activities, and just being on your feet a lot," said Dr. Derek Harper, a podiatrist with Memorial Regional Health.
|
Dr. Derek Harper |
Harper said that more than half his training has been in ankle injuries. Podiatrists in the state of Colorado can treat anything in the ankle and foot, he said. With any ankle sprain or injury, the first thing you want to do is start RICE — rest, ice, compression, elevation — Harper said. "If there's pain when trying to walk, it's a good idea to come in and have it checked by a doctor," he said.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
IL Podiatrist Featured in "Walk with a Doc" Program
There are hundreds of reasons to get up and walk. Maybe more. During the "Walk with a Doc" program at the Workman Sports and Wellness Complex in Effingham over the weekend, Dr. James Graham, who specializes in podiatry said the whole goal of the monthly program is to simply get people walking.
|
Dr. James Graham |
Walk with a Doc began with a cardiologist in Ohio who invited patients to join him for a walk on a Saturday morning. “The idea got momentum; then it started spreading.” said Graham. “There is a whole organization set up around this concept now.” Graham, who has been practicing medicine in Effingham since 1989, demonstrated and talked about the importance of stretching before you walk, and also the heart health benefits of walking.

FIP NEWS |
FIP President Addresses the European Union Parliament
Matthew Garoufalis, DPM, President of the International Federation of Podiatrists (FIP) and APMA Past President led a delegation of podiatrists from across Europe to the European Union Parliament in Brussels to demonstrate the value of podiatry.
|
Dr. Matthew Garoufalis |
This meeting served as an introduction to the EU that the FIP was undertaking the project of building a common training framework for podiatrists across Europe that would standardize a common level of education and training for podiatry in the EU. This would follow the European Union mandate of professional mobility across nations. The meeting was a huge success with all signs pointing in a positive direction and the EU looking favorably upon the project.

IN THE COURTS |
CA Podiatrist Sued in Wine Store Bankruptcy Clawback Suit
What would you do if a wine merchant took your money, but never delivered the bottles? You'd ask for your money back. Now, what if that store went bankrupt and the lawyer charged with paying off the store's creditors sued you for your refund? That's the situation facing dozens of former customers of Premier Cru, the infamous Berkeley, CA, shop that went belly-up in 2016.
Shirlin Wong, DPM, a California podiatrist who started buying wine from Premier Cru in 2003 received little of the wine she paid for. In 2015, she sued Premier Cru in state court to recover $230,000 for undelivered wines. That October, she got a settlement check for $78,936. But last December, Michael Kasolas court-appointed trustee sued Wong, claiming that she had received a "preferential transfer" from Premier Cru within the 90-day window. The complaint asks for payment of the exact amount paid to Wong by Premier Cru plus pre-judgment interest and court costs.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Common Web Design Mistakes Most Medical Practices Make - Part 4
Here are some medical website design mistakes that can hurt your practice:
4. Bad-Quality Images
An image is worth a thousand words. Relevant and high-quality visual content will drive more customer engagement. Every image and graphic that you use on your website must have a purpose and an underlying goal. Using irrelevant or low-quality stock images can undermine your credibility and confuse your visitors. Bad-quality images that are not relevant to your specialty will turn off visitors.
Pro Tip: Use original images that look professional. It is critical to invest time and money in getting attractive images of your products, behind-the-scenes office pictures, and your team members.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 1 |
From: Joel Lang, DPM
While I am not an attorney, nor even a practicing podiatrist (anymore), it strikes me that the first responsibility you have is for the safety of your patients and staff. Bed bugs are a serious problem and can be transmitted readily. This patient has a serious contagious health problem and appropriate precautions must be taken to safeguard everyone in your office.
It seems a reasonable approach to require the patient to assure you that he is no longer a danger to himself, your patients, or your staff. You can resume his treatment once reasonable and credible evidence is presented that the danger no longer exists. This is not a question of discrimination; it is one of public health.
I also suggest that you enlist the aid of a company with a bed bug dog to again re-examine your office a few weeks from now to assure that the infestation is gone.
Joel Lang, DPM (retired), Cheverly, MD

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 1A |
From: Ron Werter DPM
The important thing is not keeping the credit card numbers on file. I had asked our state podiatry society for a legal opinion on this (just another reason to be a member of the APMA). As it turns out, if there's any type of hacking or breach, or if the patient finds out that you are keeping the number at all, you can be subject to major fines.
The answer is to have your credit card processor keep the credit card number on their files. They are legally allowed to; we are not. There are various ways they do that, but basically when the patient comes in, you would enter their CC number or input their card to the CC company special site. Then Chase or Royal or whoever you use, has the number on their files. When the EOB with the patient responsibility comes in, you go on their secure site and submit the amount to them using the patient's name or special ID as if it was a new charge. You do not have access to the number; only they do.
As for the particular form the patient signs, there are a number of examples on the Internet, but basically the form they sign is your giving them information and their giving you permission to charge them later.
Ron Werter DPM, NY, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) - PART 1A |
From: John Moglia, DPM
I am attempting to follow CMS guidelines for avoiding penalties in the future. Has anyone come up with a simple worksheet to include in the patient record of the Practice Improvement Activities relevant to podiatrists to avoid the penalty as per Dr. Brody’s advice for Non-EHR practices.
I can’t find any sensible coherent guidelines on the CMS website. I would gladly pay Codingline or any other consultant if they provide this advice.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER) - PART 1B |
From: Tip Sullivan, DPM
I would like to point out the obvious. One sure way to avoid the government MIPS program penalty is to choose not to participate! There are some successful practices out there that have taken that line. I would encourage some to try it--especially those close to retirement.
