OH Podiatrist Discusses How to Buy Athletic Shoes
Exercising can be a rewarding and beneficial activity. Whether it’s running, walking, or working out at the gym, wearing the proper shoes may be just as important as the actual movements. Danielle Shaper, DPM, owner and podiatrist at Finesse Foot Care in Lyndhurst, discussed why the fit and type of shoe is important to keep in mind while exercising.

A person’s shoe should have a “finger’s length of room at the toe box,” so the toes can still push off of the ground, Dr. Shaper explained. Having room at the top of the shoe prevents the toe from being pushed into the shoe and ingrown nails from forming, she added. Another test Shaper recommends is the “folding test,” where a person tries to fold the shoe in half. If the shoe is successfully folded in half, then it is flimsy and won’t provide proper support.

| REMEMBERING PODIATRY STUDENTS | |
TUSPM Student Remembered During Black History Month
The apples surely didn't fall far from these two trees — Thurman Clemons, MD, and his wife Ammie Clemons, RN. Amazingly, all three daughters followed in their parents’ footsteps, each pursuing medical careers. First came Tammy Yvette Clemons. Podiatry was her field. in 1995, she graduated from Spelman College cum laude with her B.S in Biology. She was also a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.

Sadly, in 2000, at the young age of 27, her life ended. She was a senior at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Pennsylvania, and she was scheduled to graduate with her Class of 2001. Still, her headstone reminds us of her purpose. It reads: “Doctor of Podiatry.”

VA Podiatrist Starts as Attending Foot and Ankle Surgeon at Richmond VAMC
David Morgan, DPM has recently started as attending podiatric surgeon at the Richmond VA. Dr. Morgan earned his podiatric medical degree from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. He completed podiatric residencies at the Cook County Hospital, Veterans Administration, and St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center.

Foot Infection Caused by MRSA Spreads in Showers: Spanish Podiatrist
Sports in gyms, swimming pools, and spas is always good news because it indicates healthy habits among the population. It is not so much so if it also implies the increase in infections. This is what is happening in the public showers of all these centers with an increased risk of contagion. The alarm signal has been given by the Official College of Podiatry of the Valencian Community. They have pointed out that cases of a MRSA infection that until now have been less frequent have begun to rise in these spaces.

MRSA is usually found on the shower floor. “Infections can easily spread from the feet of one infected person to another because these organisms proliferate in warm, humid environments“ declared podiatrist Dr. Jorge Escoto, member of the board. What podiatrists recommend is that we avoid the risk and start with always wearing flip-flops in public bathrooms. And don’t forget to carry them separately in a plastic bag. Wash and disinfect them after use, and make sure that they dry well.

RE: The Passing of Mark Dante Leodori, DPM
Dr. Mark Dante Leodori ("Doc") passed away peacefully on February 16, 2024, at the age of 68, after a brief illness. He graduated from The Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and thereafter completed a surgical residency in Memphis, Tennessee.

In 1981, he returned to establish a life-long podiatry practice in Totowa as a board-certified podiatric surgeon. He was on staff at both Saint Joseph's Hospital in Paterson and Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, until his retirement in 2022.
