PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Many Treatment Options Available for Painful Feet and Ankles: CO Podiatrist

According to the America Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine, podiatric physicians are uniquely qualified among medical professional to treat the lower extremity based on their education, training, and expertise. "There are many treatment options to try when it comes to foot and ankle pain," says Dr. Derek Harper, podiatrist at Memorial Regional Health. "When less invasive options aren't successful, surgery may be the best way to find a resolution."

Dr. Derek Harper

Whether it's the simple act of going from the car to the grocery store or pain in your feet and ankles is keeping you on the couch instead of on the ski slope this winter, it might be time to see a podiatrist. Not only might you be missing out on fun activities, but also, the more uncomfortable it is to walk, the more sedentary you may become, causing weight gain and possibly depression.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1
Heritage of Odessa to Honor TX Podiatrist

George Tye Liu, DPM said he takes to heart the idea that service is the price you pay for the space you occupy in this world. Dr. Liu said he views himself more as someone who is in the trenches striving to do the best they can for the task at hand, but his leadership and industry achievements have continuously brought him under the spotlight.

Dr. George Liu

Liu was recognized by the Texas Podiatric Medical Association in 2018 as having exemplary commitment and distinguished service to podiatric medicine at the state and national level, and this week he will receive a Distinguished Former Odessan Award at the annual Heritage of Odessa awards banquet for his numerous accomplishments.

Jonathan Tomines

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
3 Ways to Improve Patient Communications - Part 1

Most practitioners are proficient at communicating in lay terms to clarify common medical terminology and idioms. But there are other things some doctors inadvertently do that can compromise their credibility. Here are three easy adjustments you can make to ensure you’re coming across loud and clear.

1. Be mindful of your body language. - Your body is talking even when your mouth is shut. The question is, do you know what it’s saying? Elements of body language can enhance or diminish the level of confidence you aim to characterize, but many of us are unaware of the subtle messages we send through our posture, our gestures, and even our grooming and clothing. Something as simple as donning a stained lab coat, constantly fidgeting with a pen, or not making eye contact can veer patients and colleagues away from hearing the vital information you have to share. That’s why it’s important to stand tall, smile sincerely, and enter the examination room with a welcoming physical presence.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Posterior Tibial Tendon Repair with Spring Ligament Tightening

Would a spring ligament tightening be included in the CPT 27658 billed for the posterior tibial tendon repair?

Tonia Silva, Administrator for Alanna Wargula, DPM and Adelina Stateva, DPM, Lakeport, CA

Response: CPT code 27658 is: Repair, flexor tendon, leg; primary, without graft, each tendon. This is the most appropriate CPT code to bill for the repair of the posterior tibial tendon, at the level of the ankle or proximal. Since the spring ligament is contiguous to the posterior tibial tendon and it is being “tightened” in order to enhance the healing process of the ruptured, posterior tibial tendon, this appears to be a supplemental part of the posterior tibial tendon repair as opposed to a “Distinct Procedural Service” and should not be billed for separately.

RE: The Passing of Milton Shepler, DPM

Dr. Milton Shepler, age 96, passed away on January 14, 2019. He graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1947. Milton lived his entire life in Akron where he was a successful podiatrist and an avid golfer.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Tip Sullivan, DPM

I felt compelled to respond to Dr. Nadal's post suggesting non-fixated osteotomy of the second metatarsal as a salvage surgery. I quote: "Had he or she left it unfixated, chances are that the metatarsal head would have shifted slightly laterally."

The key here is "chances are". If he believes that the met head should be moved, why leave it up to "chance". I think it would not look good if there were a complication (i.e.-non-union) and one had to defend themselves with "chances are"!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS)
From: Marc Haspel, DPM

Regarding the poll about podiatry being a surgical specialty, I voted with the minority. In the mechanics of main stream medicine, podiatric medicine is normally found under the heading of Department of Surgery in hospital settings. This in no way should imply that every patient who enters a podiatry practice has a problem appropriate for the operating room, or that every podiatric physician ought to be prepared to perform every imaginable podiatric surgical procedure.

I’m sure that many patients who seek the care of general surgeons, orthopedists, and the like, are not automatically operated upon, and this does not change the designation of those types of practices. I am proud to be able to offer mostly conservative therapies in my practice, but that doesn’t mean that the profession should not aim to be regarded as a surgical sub-specialty of medicine like the others mentioned.
