AK Podiatrist Leads Fundraising in Governor's Race
The first round of fundraising reports in the 2026 governor’s race were released Tuesday, shedding some light on a crowded field. Altogether, candidates raised more than $4.3 million by the beginning of February, according to the first batch of campaign finance reports in the race. Anchorage podiatrist and Republican Matt Heilala, DPM accounts for more than a quarter of the total. Heilala contributed nearly $1.3 million to his own campaign, accounting for more than 94% of his fundraising. In an interview, Dr. Heilala said self-funding his campaign means he can turn down contributions from donors or groups that don’t jive with his values.
|
|
Dr. Matt Heilala |
“I'm not in desperate need of big money from big, influential donors. There's a quid pro quo, and that's a major problem,” Heilala said. “Not to say I'm not going to take money from some big donors as we keep going, but I'm going to be able to be very, very selective.” Heilala has also accumulated hundreds of smaller donors, raising more than $60,000 from just shy of 350 donors.

NY Podiatrist Provides Advice on What to Look for in Wide Shoes
If you have wide feet, you’re probably no stranger to the feeling of tightness and pinching after stepping into a new pair of shoes. To find the perfect running or walking shoe, you may need to focus on options with a wide width. “The right shoe will feel comfortable, provide adequate space for your toes to move freely, and support your foot’s natural shape and alignment,” says Isaac Tabari, DPM, a board-certified foot and ankle doctor and owner of the NYC Podiatry Center of Excellence.
|
|
Dr. Isaac Tabari |
A wide-width shoe offers more room throughout the entire shoe — including the toe box, midsole, and heel,” says Dr. Tabari. The whole point of getting shoes wide enough for your feet is to make sure they’re comfortable. So along with width, look for shoes with arch support and a cushioned sole, says Tabari. You can also keep an eye out on whether or not the shoes are wide enough to accommodate orthotic inserts or insoles should you need them. “These features can help prevent injuries such as plantar fasciitis or stress fractures,” says Tabari.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
7 ways to Avoid a Malpractice Case Before it Starts
Here are seven practical, systems-minded ways practice leaders can lower malpractice risk without turning every visit into defensive medicine.
2) Treat test results follow-up like a safety-critical process
“Assume the patient will see it in the portal” is not a system. Outpatient claims often involve abnormal results that were not acted on, not communicated or not tracked to closure. Use a closed-loop process: Assign responsibility, define time frames for normal versus abnormal versus critical results and document outreach attempts proportional to potential harm. AHRQ’s PSNet has multiple primers and cases showing how quickly “no news” can become a lawsuit, including this PSNet case on failure to contact a patient about abnormal results.

6 Common Tax Mistakes to Avoid This Tax Season
To help you avoid a shock on filing day, here are six common ways you could be paying more income taxes than necessary.
5A. Your tax-inefficient investments hurt your return
Did you sell a stock, bond, or piece of real estate for a profit last year? If so, that capital gain likely boosted your taxable income and potentially contributed to a higher tax bill. However, it isn't just what you sell that matters — it's where and how long you hold your investments. Your income tax bill might be higher than expected because of these common oversights:
-
Poor asset location. Keeping "tax-heavy" investments — such as high-yield bonds or actively managed mutual funds that payout frequent dividends — in a taxable brokerage account instead of a tax-deferred 401(k) or IRA.
-
Frequent trading. Gains on assets held for less than a year (short-term) are taxed at ordinary income rates, which can reach as high as 40.8% when you include the net investment income tax (NIIT).
-
Missing out on tax-loss harvesting. If you have winning investments, you can offset those gains by selling "losers" at a loss. If your losses exceed your gains, you can use up to $3,000 to offset your ordinary taxable income.

Making the Most of Cadaver Lab
Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:
4. Percutaneous Throw EVERYTHING
Practice every percutaneous throw you can think of—fifth met fracture screws (high and tight), Lisfranc screws, medial malleolus fixation, TTC nails—everything. The more repetition you get, the more natural it becomes.
Cadaver lab is the perfect place to refine your technique without the pressure of the OR. The muscle memory you build here will pay off ten-fold when you’re scrubbed in on a real case. You will also find it really helps with your confidence once you do get into the OR and have to nail the throw.

Query: Podiatry Billing Company Recommendations
I’m a solo practitioner looking for a new billing company, preferably one with strong podiatry experience. A relentless effort in fighting denials is crucial. Solid customer service and communication are also key. Any recommendations?

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1 | |
Fran was the valedictorian of his class at TUSPM. He was brilliant, funny, a bit of a tough guy, and a talented surgeon. He always performed with 110% energy and intensity. I knew him from his Temple U days and we practiced at the same hospital for years. He left podiatry to become a successful financial advisor. That was a definite loss for the profession. He was a family man and a good friend and will be missed by all.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2A | |
I remember taking Gen Med from Dr. Zier in podiatry school, which we jokingly called Ben Med, with affection. The course left me well prepared for residency rotations in general medicine and emergency medicine, in which I was able to function at the same level as the medical residents.
Dr. Zier related a story about when he was a resident. He told the staff that he was beginning his residency, and was there to learn as much as he could. As a result, the staff taught him a great deal. Another resident at that time came across as knowing it all, which resulted in his rotations being much more difficult to get through. I carried this advice into residency and private practice.
There are two things that I learned from Dr. Zier by direct observation of patient care in rounds with him. The first was how to determine if a patient has liver disease when the patient's hands are extended. The second was the work-up necessary to diagnose Addisonian crisis. Although I never saw either of these in private practice, I never forgot them. His passing is sad to hear, but what he has done teaching podiatry students is immeasurable.
Bart Holt, DPM, Missoula, MT

RE: The Passing of Bennett Zier, MD
I am sorry to hear about Dr. Bennett Zier’s passing. As a student in San Francisco, I had the chance to learn from him and also saw his care firsthand as a patient. He was a steady, thoughtful physician and a dedicated teacher who had a real impact on many of us in podiatric medicine. I’m grateful for what he taught and the example he set. My condolences to his family, colleagues, and all who knew him.
