AT THE COLLEGES |
New Strideway 5 in Gait Lab at NYCPM Helps to "See" How Patients Walk
Thanks to a generous donation that was directed to the Gait Lab by a grateful patient of alumnus Joseph D’Amico, DPM, NYCPM Professor of Orthopedics and Pediatrics, the Gait Lab has acquired Strideway 5. This is a new system that enables our clinicians to gain valuable insight into underlying gait abnormalities, inefficiencies, or imbalances that might otherwise go undetected, a system described by Jeffrey J. Cusack, DPM (’81), Assistant Professor of Orthopedics, who runs the Gait Lab, as a “force plate on steroids.”
|
Zach Weyandt '19 demonstrates how patients walk on Strideway 5’s force plate. |
By linking a two-plane simultaneous digital capture of the patient walking across the platform, according to Dr. Cusack, Strideway 5 provides real time kinetic, temporal, and spatial gait parameters, as well as pressure and force data, facilitating comprehensive gait analysis in both clinical and research environments.

PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES |
CT Podiatrist is Co-Director of Amputation Prevention Program
A new program at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, aimed at helping people at risk of losing a limb to amputation, is taking shape. The L+M program assembled a team of podiatrists, radiologists, cardiologists, surgeons, and internal medicine specialists from across the Yale New Haven Health System who began seeing patients in Groton in November.
|
Dr. Peter Blume |
"There's the economic impact of it, there's the social impact — (not only) for society but also for the individual," said Dr. Carlos Mena, who co-directs the program with Yale New Haven Hospital podiatrist Peter Blume, DPM. "Think of a guy who's 50 years old who supports a family, who suddenly loses his limb and no longer can work. On an individual basis, you just affected that family in a dramatic fashion. (On a) societal basis, that guy who is no longer working is now lost to the workforce."

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
UK Podiatrist Primed for London Marathon Charity Quest
As a specialist podiatrist, Helen Newton knows how devastating the complications of diabetes can be, and how resilient her patients are in managing their condition. And this - along with a close family connection to the condition - have inspired her to run the London Marathon on Sunday April 22, in support of the charity Diabetes UK Cymru.
|
Helen Newton |
The 39-year-old, from Rogerstone, who works for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, is building up her training towards the event, having taken up running again two years ago. “I mainly deal with patients who live with diabetes, and I have a close family connection to the condition," said Newton.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS |
Aussie Podiatrist Running for Legislative Seat
Podiatrist Giles Rositano, 37, has joined the SA Best ranks to compete against Labor and Liberal parties in the northern suburbs seat of King. He has worked in healthcare for 12 years with Country Health SA, SA Health in the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network, the Watto Purrunna Aboriginal Health Service, and in his own private practice. His work has been based in metropolitan clinics, the prison system, and in regional and Indigenous communities.
|
Giles Rositano |
His private practice is part of a multi-disciplinary team working alongside community GPs. He believes government resources should be directed to maximizing patient outcomes to people in their own community. “This reduces the burden on the public health system, by supporting GPs and allied health teams in delivering enhanced community based services,” he says. “Patients from all ages and walks of life teach me something new every day. They have inspired me to take these community issues and give them a voice that can be heard.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
Common Web Design Mistakes Most Medical Practices Make - Part 3
Here are medical website design mistakes that can hurt your practice:
3. Unclear Calls to Action (CTAs)
Your CTA prompts visitors to take the next desired step on your website. Make sure your CTA is prominent and tells visitors exactly what to do. You may lose potential leads or you ask them to click on too many links on your website. On many websites, low conversion rates are a result of a CTA getting lost in the cluttered design. It is essential to make sure that your CTA button stands out on the webpage and makes it easy for visitors to take the desired action.
Pro Tip: Whatever your desired CTA is, make sure it is clear, concise, and easy to find. Do not make your website visitors guess. Tell them exactly what you want them to do.

Query: MIPS 2020 Avoiding the 5% Negative Adjustment
How can a practice that does not utilize an EMR obtain 15 MIPS points and avoid a negative adjustment in 2020?
Ira Cohen, DPM, Downey, CA
Response: The easiest way for a practice that does not have an EHR to obtain 15 points is to fully participate in Practice Improvement Activities which is worth 15 points. You do not need an EHR to do this and you can report this via attestation which is free through the CMS website.
There are many ways to meet Practice Improvement Activities and many are not very difficult.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
Query: Patient with Bed Bugs
I recently had a new patient come to the office for a non-limb threatening problem. After he left and we went to clean the treatment room, several large bedbugs were found on the chair. I have since had hours of worry, cleaning, and missed productivity time, not to mention the $1,000 I had to pay a pest control company to ensure eradication of the bugs.
My question is, how do I deal with this patient in the future? Am I allowed to refuse to see him unless he can prove to me that he has been “exterminated”? Can I discharge him due to the great expense of time and money his visit caused? We contacted the patient after the incident, and he had “no idea” of any bug problem. He has Medicare/Medicaid.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2A |
RE: The Passing of Richard Eusanio, DPM
I'm sad to report the loss of a good friend and colleague, Richard Eusanio, DPM, to lymphoma. Richard practiced in Mesquite, TX, a Dallas suburb. He was honest and well-respected by his colleagues, dedicated to his family, practice, and patients, and will be missed.
But what's up with podiatrists and lymphoma? Besides Drs. Goldsmith and Eusanio, I know of others. Are we breathing too much nail dust, phenol fumes, glutaraldehyde, skin adherent, and/or standing too close to our x-ray machines?
