PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES
For Diabetics, Treatment with Stem Cells May Avert Amputation

According to data presented at the 73rd Annual Scientific Conference of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS), advances in stem cell therapy can significantly improve outcomes for patients with chronic diabetic foot ulcers. Use of stem cells to treat foot problems like diabetic ulcers may speed up the healing process, preventing infection and hospitalization during recovery.

Dr. Javier LaFontaine

“With recent developments in stem cell research, patients experience a quicker and easier recovery,” said Javier LaFontaine, DPM, FACFAS, a Dallas foot and ankle surgeon, Fellow Member of ACFAS and associate professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. “We are optimistic that this complementary therapy will reduce unnecessary pain, disability, and even amputation, which have become an unfortunate reality for many diabetics.”

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
CA Podiatrist Discusses Plantar Fasciitis

According to Jeffrey Gregori, DPM, "Usually, overuse causes plantar fasciitis – too much exercise over too short a time frame – as well as poor shoe fit or poor insoles. For example, you might run 5 miles when you haven’t done so in 10 years, or walk around for hours in flip-flops at an amusement park."
Dr. Jeffrey Gregori

"It’s important to treat plantar fasciitis as soon as you feel the heel or arch pain. When treated early, it usually goes away in four to six weeks with conservative treatment, including rest, massage, stretching, icing, and wearing supportive shoes. If these measures don’t help, a podiatrist will usually consider cortisone injections and custom orthotics," says Dr. Gregori.

IN THE COURTS
Jury Deadlocks in Favor of Acquitting CA Podiatrist of Child Molestation Charges

Jurors deadlocked 11-1 on Tuesday in favor of acquitting a Torrance podiatrist of accusations he molested his adopted daughter more than 30 years ago, prompting his attorney to say prosecutors never should have filed the case. Jurors informed Torrance Superior Court Judge Steven Van Sicklen they were unable to reach a verdict in the case of Arnold Serkin following a weeklong trial. “The jurors did not believe the complaining witness and were troubled there was no evidence to corroborate or substantiate her claims,” said Serkin’s attorney, Mark Werksman. “It was just her word alone about things she said allegedly happened 25 to 30 years ago.”

The trial was the first for the 69-year-old Serkin, who later this year will appear in Torrance court before another jury that will decide whether he molested four patients in his office, and then will face civil lawsuits filed by his daughter and a patient. Prosecutors will return to court March 17 to announce whether they will retry Serkin on the six child molestation counts involving his daughter, and continue preparations with the defense for the trial related to his medical practice, Werksman said.

E-HEALTH NEWS
Electronic Health Records Soon to Work Interoperably

Electronic-medical-records systems may soon start speaking the same language. Thanks in part to $27 billion in federal funds approved in 2009 to incentivize their use, electronic records have been increasingly adopted in healthcare. But hospitals and doctors’ offices still experience widespread conflicts when trying to exchange patient data among different systems with incompatible technology.

Now government and industry initiatives are underway to make the sharing of data easier. The goal is to create networks with the same level of seamless and expansive interoperability as ATMs and cellular phone networks, with the ability to securely exchange patient data among multiple providers free or for a nominal fee.

ICD-10 PREPARATION
6 Key Takeaways for ICD-10 Testing - Part 1
End-to-End Testing

Medicare offered end-to-end testing in January and will do so again in April and July 2015, letting about 850 providers participate during each round. While there have been concerns that some Medicare contractors and other payers have not generated remittance advice to complete end-to-end testing, the agency expects to include remittance in these tests. Forms to participate are on regional contractor websites.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Prolotherapy for Plantar Fasciitis

A recent patient requested a second opinion regarding plantar fascitis with a heel spur. He has been receiving prolotherapy for fasciitis from an alternative medical physician who has been injecting fish oil, sugar water, and lidocaine into the plantar fascia to reduce inflammation. The physician charges $300 per injection and states that it takes up to five to solve the problem. Any comments?

The same thing happened to me. Getty Images does this a lot. All you have to do is write them a letter telling them to stop harassing you, and they will never contact you again. Of course, you should remove the image and take a picture yourself to put on the site.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM

I read with interest Dr. Maasi Smith's brief discussion of massage therapy for patients. I think this is one area of treatment that has not been sufficiently explored by podiatrists, who are more "comfortable" regarding themselves as surgeons and physicians. Those who "distance" themselves from their patients are losing a very good opportunity to re-connect with them.

The "disgruntled" patient with a very swollen ankle and foot after a rear foot tendon transplant or ankle stabilization comes to mind. The patient is out of their cast (if one was used) and the swelling and decrease in motion is causing...

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
RE: Mrs. Malaprops Returns for a Visit

A patient came in today with considerable swelling and discoloration in both lower legs and feet. When asked how long he had had the condition, he replied that he had "limb-a-theme-a" (lymphedema) for some time!
