UTRGV SOPM Student’s Research Explores Impact of AI on Underserved
Olivia Mackey had already been investigating the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, before she came to the Rio Grande Valley in 2022 from Missouri to join the inaugural class of the UTRGV School of Podiatric Medicine (UTRGV SOPM).

“Overall, AI does bring great benefit,” said Mackey, who contributed to two research projects started at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Mackey’s family moved from Nigeria to Houston, where she was born and raised. In the United States, she observed a lack of accessible care for people of color and later researched disparities in maternal death rates for Black women, especially those on Medicaid.

FL Podiatrist Elected President of FPMA
Larissa McDonough Schmidt, DPM, a podiatrist in Winter Garden, has become president of the Florida Podiatric Medical Association (FPMA) for 2024. Dr. Schmidt is a third generation podiatrist who attended Rollins College in Winter Park where she majored in pre-med and was inducted into Rollins’ Sports Hall of Fame for her soccer performance.

She attended what is now known as the Kent State College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland and has been in private practice for 10 years after completing a podiatric residency in Orlando for foot and ankle surgery.

MI Podiatrist Discovered Podiatry at College Pre-Professional Club
Despite differing reasons for entering the medical field, women have long played a role in the advancement of medicine. A love of science drove Megan Bergeron, DPM to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Bergeron went on to study human biology at Michigan State University, where she joined a pre-professional club with presentations from many different doctors. “That’s when I heard about podiatry for the first time. Before that, I didn’t even know it existed,” she said, with a chuckle.

“That summer I actually went and shadowed a podiatrist … and I liked how it was focused on one area of the body, and I was like, ‘All right, I like this.’ So I started looking into podiatry schools and applying.” After earning her doctorate from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, Dr. Bergeron returned to Michigan to complete her residency at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township last July.

CA Podiatrist Hosts Show on Real-Life Love Stories
They sat on a couch in the Laguna Woods Village TV studio, hands touching, canes stashed out of view, their eyes twinkling with the joy of recalled memories. Dennis and Evette Glauber, 97 and 93 respectively, were getting ready to share how they became a couple 37 years ago. Village TV host Sheryl Strich, DPM interviewed the Glaubers, along with another couple, Jeanne and Jim Costello, for the Valentine’s Day segment of her show, How We Met.

Dr. Strich is a retired podiatrist who majored in TV, radio, and film at Syracuse University in New York. She came to California in 1975 and moved to the Village from Irvine nine years ago. “What I have seen from the couples I have interviewed is that they like being with each other. They enjoy each other’s company,” Strich said. “What I’ve learned is that a long-lasting relationship involves friendship, trust, compromise, and a deep affection for each other along with love.”

Over the years, Dr. Richie and I have not seen eye-to-eye on a host of issues with the exception that I do dispense Richie Braces. One area that we also agree on is the need for more clarity on warm-up and cool-down exercises in pickleball. Not being a certified trainer or physical therapist, it would be best to recommend that if Dr. Richie or anyone of us is interested in warm-up and cool-down exercises for pickleball, or any sport, it is advisable to either Google warm-up and cool-down exercises or go directly to YouTube. There is a wealth of good videos on warm-up and cool-down exercises available just on pickleball and taught by pros.
As an aside, way before I was in podiatry, I did training with the hopes of becoming a jockey. I spent many hours at Monticello raceway cooling down the thoroughbred horses after their daily workouts. What is good for them is good for us.
