PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE

TX Podiatrist Discusses Stress Fractures of the Foot

Stress fractures of the foot are becoming more common in runners, especially first-time marathoners, according to San Antonio, Texas foot and ankle surgeon Eddie Davis, DPM“Runners who increase their mileage too quickly or change to a more intense phase of training may be more susceptible to a stress fracture due to the increased force placed on the bones,” says Dr. Davis.

Dr. Eddie Davis

“A general rule of thumb for runners is to increase the mileage by no more than 10 percent each week. Runners who are training also need to have adequate rest time in between runs to help decrease the risk of a fracture.” If a break is suspected, Dr. Davis advises runners to immediately follow the RICE protocol—Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. If pain and swelling last longer than a few days, an appointment for imaging and a diagnosis is in order.

PODIATRISTS OVERCOMING ADVERSITT
NY Podiatrist Emerges from 61-Day Coma

Robert Crain, DPM went shopping with his wife and 8-year-old daughter Oct. 3 at Target, picking up some laundry detergent and Legos. Crain had a nagging cough, and when he got home, his wife suggested they go the ER to check it out.

Dr. Robert Crain

That's the last thing Crain, 47, a Fayetteville podiatrist, remembers until Jan. 8, when he emerged from a medically induced coma to find he was in Upstate University Hospital. He stayed at the hospital another five weeks, and went home on Valentine's Day.

OUTSIDE INTERESTS
FL Podiatrist is a Thespian

When actor David Ehrlich, DPM, performs, his main goal is for the audience to experience the emotions that he attempts to project. In his latest gig in The Playgroup’s “All Together Now,” Ehrlich plays the role of a parent of a son turning 40. The son has a male partner and finds out about a son he didn’t know he had.

Dr. David Ehrlich

At 72, Dr. Ehrlich has reinvented himself as a thespian. He retired from his successful podiatry practice in 2010 and started his acting career in 2012. “My initial obstacle was willing to be open and expose my emotions,” said Ehrlich, of Boca Raton. “Once I started to work with more actors and observe them, as well as take some acting classes, it came more naturally.”

MEETING NEWS
IL Podiatrist Attends PGA Show

Marlene Reid, DPM of Naperville, IL recently attended the PGA Show in Orlando and the Open Forum, a conference put on by GolfMD for an elite group of golf coaches, professional players, instructors, biomechanists, and others interested in the science of golf to share their latest insights and breakthroughs. This was the 6th year of the Open Forum put on by Chris Como, Nick Chertock, and Michael Michaelides. Dr. Reid, a new golfer herself, has been studying the biomechanics of the foot and ankle as related to the golf swing and the considerations of golf on the lower extremities.

Dr. Marlene Reid

This is the second year she attended these events with an eye for understanding how foot deformities and pathology may influence the golf swing and vice versa. Reid met with several golf professionals and biomechanical specialists affiliated with advanced electronic and software coaching tools.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Common Web Design Mistakes Most Medical Practices Make - Part 2

Here are five medical website design mistakes that can hurt your practice:

2.  Bad Navigation

Even if your website is visually appealing with a professional design, visitors can still leave over poor navigation. Poor website navigation will make conversions almost impossible. The navigation within your website must be seamless so that visitors are able to find their way around. Product categories should be neatly organized, and labels should be easy to understand. According to one study, if visitors cannot see what they are searching for in three clicks, they will leave your website.

Pro Tip: You can make navigation more accessible by using textual description for links and alt text for graphics. Keep your website clean and simple. An attractive design with an elegant interface is a recipe for success.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PRACTICE MANAGEMENT)
RE: NCDs and LCDs
From: Hal Ornstein, DPM

NCDs (National Coverage Determinations) and LCDs (Local Coverage Determinations) are decisions by Medicare and their administrative contractors that provide coverage information and determine whether services are reasonable and necessary on certain services offered by participating providers. Simply stated these are the rules Medicare sets forth for a number of procedures we perform such as routine foot care, wound care, durable medical equipment, etc. These can be found for your state by clicking here. These can also be found in APMA’s Coding Resource Center.

LCDs help to clarify proper coding, billing, and documentation ensuring compliance on multiple levels. Print each of the LCDs which apply to podiatry and have someone in your office responsible for underlining the key points and copy for all in the office to review with all followed to be compliant. A sound plan is to review the list of LCDs every three months to see if any have changed with any changes circulated to all in the office.

Upon an audit you are expected to know the guidelines and rules set forth in each of the LCDs which apply to podiatry. By thoroughly understanding LCDs, you can maximize reimbursement while practicing good medicine.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Jay Seidel, DPM

Dr. Parmelee's form is great; it's clear, concise and gets the job done. However, how do you store these slips with a patient's credit card info? When completing my annual PCI compliance for my CC machine, they made it very clear that storing credit card info properly is very difficult and usually requires a third-party with bank-level security and encryption.
