MO Podiatrist Offers Tips to Prevent Athlete's Foot

Even when treated successfully, athlete’s foot has a tendency to recur in some people. “Avoidance of moisture and trauma (to the toenails) is necessary to prevent reinfection,”  Dr. David Amarnek  a podiatrist with The Foot and Ankle Center in St. Louis.says.

Dr. David Amarnek

He recommends these preventive tips: “Dry your feet very well after bathing; don’t use any moisturizers on your toes; use an antifungal powder on your feet and in your shoes; change stockings or socks during the day as needed; and avoid wearing the same pair of shoes on consecutive days.”

AZ Podiatrist to Receive ADA’s 2010 Roger Pecoraro Award

David G. Armstrong, Professor of Surgery and Director of the Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) at the University of Arizona, has been selected as the 2010 Roger Pecoraro awardee and lecturer by the American Diabetes Association. The award is named in honor of Roger Pecoraro, who died in 1991. Pecoraro’s early work paved the way toward understanding the causes of limb-threatening wounds and infections and how to treat and prevent them. The Pecoraro Award is considered the highest honor in the world of the diabetic foot and wound healing.

Dr. David G. Armstrong

Dr. Armstrong becomes the youngest awardee in its two decade history. "I am so very honored to have even been considered for the Pecoraro," noted Dr. Armstrong "to be named alongside so many of my friends and mentors is not only a thrill, but it is also a responsibility to continue to make a difference." The award and lectureship will officially take place this June at the American Diabetes Association's annual symposium in Orlando, Florida which draws 15,000 physicians and scientists.

CT Podiatry Group Donates Shoes to Senior Non-Profit

St. Luke’s Eldercare Solutions of Central Connecticut received a shoe windfall Wednesday. Connecticut Foot Care Centers LLC donated around 100 pairs of new shoes to the tiny Middletown-based non-profit, which provides free services to seniors. The medical practice recently stopped selling orthopedic shoes, but instead of returning the shoes that each of its six offices used to determine sizing, the doctors decided to donate them locally. “There’s a lot of need out there,” said Dr. Jeffrey Kahn, a podiatrist.

The bounty included shoes in a variety of sizes and styles, from enormous sneakers to dainty Mary Janes. All the donated footwear has extra cushioning and support and runs wide to minimize toe rubbing. The shoes would retail for about $140 a pair, Kahn said, and the total donation was worth around $10,000.

SOS Training Workshop Adds Back Office Expert to Faculty

Lynn Homisak has announced the expansion of her successful SOS Healthcare Management Solution’s Staff/Office Training Workshops by welcoming Cindy Pezza, PMAC, of Stoughton, MA to the faculty.

Cindy Pezza, PMAC

Cindy adds a brand new dimension of knowledge by teaching back office staff how take a more active “hands-on” patient role with DME, the therapeutic shoe and in-office dispensing programs, while front office focuses on billing and collections. In addition, the workshop continues to train the doctors/staff team on how to have an overall educated, productive and efficient practice.

RE: Jay Geier's Scheduling Institute (Gary Gugliada, DPM)
From: David Helfman, DPM

I met Jay Geier in my coaching program "The Strategic Coach" in Chicago 2 months ago and talked to him about his main business which focuses on the "dental market" which has over 100,000 practicing dentists on a national level. He has a handful of clients who pay him a monthly fee to be in his program and he also offers dentists coaching services. I believe it's about $99.00 per month and if you go to his seminars or use his special coaching it can be...

RE: EMR From Hospitals
From: Harry Cotler, DPM

I have been researching various EMR-EHR and practice management programs. I’ve also had a few demos and had more scheduled for next week. Our hospital has recently set up a couple of doctors in practice, whereby they are employed by the hospital. I contacted the hospital and they are now setting up private doctor offices with the same software, and they are also funding a good portion of the cost. The programs are web-based, certified, and qualify for stimulus. These programs store/secure/protect all data.

There is a podiatry-specific program, though I don’t know how specific.  I do know that I am able to tweak and adjust it, and should be able to take and incorporate what I have personalized in Medinotes and transfer it over. It is nice knowing that the hospital did all of the research before accepting and implementing this program for their use. I encourage everyone to inquire within your hospitals.

RE: MD Logic EMR (Mario Dickens, DPM)
From: Multiple Respondents

I have used MD Logic for the past 4-5 years. It is an easy, but very basic program. I upgraded to their Worldwide edition, and have been promised a user’s catalog for two years, but they never have produced it. Their customer support is terrible. I have been requesting assistance on how to use the additional features on the Worldwide upgrade. However, they have ignored my numerous requests for assistance. They just don't care! I would highly consider a more complete system; at least, with a company that cares more to provide backup support rather than to sell you the program and ignore you. I am looking at additional EMR programs which are more detailed. Don't go with any basic system. I am a very dissatisfied owner of MD Logic.

Harry E. Confer, DPM, West Covina, CA, DRHEC@aol.com

I would recommend that Dr. Dickens evaluate DOX EMR for his practice. I feel DOX EMR is an ideal system for a new solo practitioner. It is a system that one does not have to make a large investment in hard and software. One has accessibility to the practice's medical records where the Internet is available.

Jeffrey V. Chou, DPM, Louisville, KY, jvchou@aol.com

While I am unable to comment on MD Logic EMR, as a long-time user of TRAKnet (formerly PodMed) I can tell you that the benefit of TRAKnet is that it is written by a podiatrist for podiatrists. It is very user-friendly and is ready to go on day one. While any program needs to be “tweaked” to the user, TRAKnet  is easy because it is podiatry-specific. For a one-doctor practice, I believe it is the best choice.

Disclaimer: I am a consultant for Biomedix, the makers of TRAKnet

RE: G8553 E-Prescribing Update
From: David B. Arkin, DPM

For those colleagues who have been e-prescribing, here is an update. The G8443 - G8446 codes used in 2009 are no longer being used in 2010. There is now a single code G8553, indicating an e-Rx has been sent for your Medicare patient.
