AT THE COLLEGES
AZ Podiatrist Introduces Podiatry to Biomedical Sciences Students

Johanna Richey, DPM, Assistant Professor, Arizona College of Podiatric Medicine (AZCPM) visited the Biomedical Sciences students in the College of Graduate Studies (CGS) on the Downers Grove Campus for an afternoon of learning about the field of podiatric medicine and the skill of suturing. Events like this are one of the ways Midwestern University encourages interdisciplinary collaboration among healthcare professionals from different fields and is one of the benefits of the educational experience at the University.

Dr. Johanna Richey

Dr. Richey shared that she graduated twice from Midwestern University, with a BSc in Biomedical Science in 2005 and subsequently as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) in 2009, and reflected that she was once in the students' shoes as a biomedical sciences major. She went over different instruments used for suturing and several types of suturing techniques, such as the horizontal mattress suture and the vertical mattress suture.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Wearing the Right Socks Can Impact Your Workout: NY Podiatrist

Although the emphasis on fitness footwear typically revolves around shoes, the socks you wear can also impact your workout and the comfort and health of your feet. It’s never fun to exercise when your feet are sweaty. In addition to feeling uncomfortable, sweat in your sock can be a breeding ground for fungi and bacteria. To combat this, look for workout socks that wick away moisture from the foot, Bruce Pinker, DPM says. “Keeping the foot relatively dry can help to reduce the occurrence of common foot conditions such as toenail fungus (onychomycosis), warts, and athlete’s foot (tinea pedis/ringworm).”

Dr. Bruce Pinker

Dr. Pinker recommends a combination of cotton and polyester. “Ideally, socks containing 65 percent cotton and 35 percent polyester are preferred. The synthetic polyester material helps to move moisture off the foot to help keep it relatively dry,” he shares. Other sock materials that he says can work well include rayon and nylon (both of which are synthetic), as well as silk and wool (which are natural). “Silk and wool socks can be relatively high priced, and so they may not be accessible to some. Wool socks are preferred for hiking by many hikers,” Dr. Pinker says. Wool also does a good job regulating skin temperature. Some high-end athletic socks may also have silver fibers woven into the fabric. Silver acts as an antimicrobial agent, so it can reduce odor.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
Nutrition is the Cornerstone of Good Health: WI Podiatrist

The SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital Medical Staff has donated $2,500 to the Fond du Lac Area United Way to support the Ripon Area School District’s weekend backpack food program for kids on free and reduced lunch.

Dr. Molly Meier

“Nutrition is the cornerstone of good health and development, particularly in children,” according to Molly Meier, DPM, SSM Health Ripon Community Hospital Medical Chief of Staff. "It’s not just about preventing illness; it’s about fostering growth, learning, and a vibrant, energetic childhood. Understanding the importance of nutrition for children is crucial for parents, educators, and communities alike."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
6 Tips for Starting an RPM Program

Here are six steps to get you started with a remote patient monitoring program:

6. Keep an open mind.

“We already know from several use cases that this technology can improve health outcomes and make physicians better at what we do,” Matthew Smuck, MD, a spine physiatrist and director of the Wearable Health Lab at Stanford Medicine, said. “And so part of the challenge that all of us face is the busyness of our practice and the needs of our patients.

When we have the opportunity to offload parts of that onto a remote patient monitoring tool that gets better outcomes for the patient and then frees us to do things that are helping our patients, then we’re optimizing not just for our own productivity, but for our patients’ benefits. So we should all be open to these things.”

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Let’s Not Abandon Routine Foot Care
From: Lawrence Rubin, DPM

So many podiatrists are abandoning providing what is often time-consuming and poorly reimbursed but potentially limb-saving "routine foot care." Shouldn't we continue to own this often humanitarian service by doing what Dr. Fones did?

Dr. Fones was a dentist in Bridgeport, Connecticut. In 1913, he trained his assistant, Irene Newman, to be the first dental hygienist. That led to them founding dental hygiene education in the United States. How about getting APMA to work towards accomplishing this with the stipulation that supervision by a podiatrist be mandatory in every state.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2A
RE: American Foot Care Nurses
From: Chris Seuferling, DPM

I cannot speak for the rest of the country (though I imagine most states have similar concerns), but I am well-versed in Portland, Oregon's podiatry and foot nurse dynamics. I am also familiar with Portland Foot Care Clinic and its CEO Amarachi, RN. In fact, we have had multiple conversations at the state level and national APMA level to address this issue… even introducing Proposition language at the 2024 HOD (see my proposed language below). It did not gain the traction I had hoped for, but I’m told it’s on APMA’s radar.

With that said, I ultimately feel it’s an “us” issue, not a “them” issue….i.e.; it is a “Podiatry Identity” crisis and not a “Foot Nurse competition” one. Many times during the course of the year, I have the following conversation with a new patient…"Mrs. Jones, I noticed podiatrist Dr. X performed your ankle fracture surgery. Why are you not seeing...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2B
RE: Low Student Enrollment/American Foot Care Nurses
From: Richard Rettig, DPM

I read with interest the paradox between two separate topics that are being discussed simultaneously on PM NewsWe are reading that there are only about 300 TOTAL applicants to all podiatry schools. Some of them are certainly not qualified for acceptance, and some will not complete the four-year course of study. The application year is not over yet, but surely the trend here is that there will not be enough graduates to replace those of us who are currently practicing. As far as encouraging more applications to podiatry schools, the Pennsylvania Podiatric Medical Association, for one, has been beating that drum at the HOD and elsewhere for over 25 years.

The other topic is that there are nurses who have started foot care practices. This has also been ongoing for at least 25 years, but when a nurse opens up in someone's practice area, that doctor suddenly becomes acutely aware of the problem and starts a new 'OMG' discussion string on PM News. So the paradox is this: if we aren't going to produce enough podiatrists in the future, who do you think is going to do the footcare?

Richard Rettig, DPM, Philadelphia PA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3
RE: Why Podiatry School Applicants Remain Low
From: Jack Reingold, DPM

I have been involved in podiatry, both politically and educationally since I graduated 45 years ago. I have personally mentored about a dozen undergraduate students in my office and virtually all of them are now podiatrists. I have been involved with podiatry schools and residency programs for most of my career. I have brought up the issue of declining applicants for over 20 years. At first thought, this makes no sense! When I graduated in 1979, there were 225 million Americans and about 10,000 podiatrists. Now there are 325 million Americans and about 15,000 podiatrists. I believe the average age of a practicing podiatrist is now over 50 (like our MDs). We are an aging profession.

Please forgive me if my numbers are off, but I think the point is that it is a great time to be a podiatrist. A 3-year residency program has been the standard for many years and there are many opportunities for practice. It is not unreasonable for our new graduates to receive salaries of 225K and up, plus...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS)
From: Kathleen Neuhoff, DPM

On the rare instances that I need to take a neuroma patient to surgery, I have relied on clinical diagnosis. In fact, as a resident, I saw patients who had had an MRI and who received a “spacectomy” because the neuroma was not visualized. Fortunately, I rarely have this problem because most patients respond to strapping followed by orthotics.

For those who refuse orthotics, I use a cryosurgical unit to freeze the affected nerve. This is an office-based procedure requiring a 1 cm dorsal incision. Patients can return to work in one to two days.I have been doing them for over 20 years with no complications except about a 10% recurrence rate. Most of those patients are happy because it usually takes two to three years to recur and we just repeat. I consider this safer than a steroid injection and less painful than chemical ablation.
