PODIATRISTS AND THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC
Walking Barefoot Indoors Aggravates Arthritis: UK Podiatrist

Thanks to working from home during the pandemic, more of us than ever are spending hours of the day in bare feet. It's often on hard floors, or wearing what Emma McConnachie, a podiatrist and spokeswoman for the College of Podiatry, calls “sloppy” shoes with little or no support. It can play havoc with your toe joints, she says, particularly if you already have signs of osteoarthritis, which can mean your joints are prone to pain and inflammation.

Emma McConnachie

“The best thing you can do if you have arthritic pain in your toes is to off-load the joints by wearing shoes indoors. Choose a slipper or indoor shoe, such as Crocs, with a shaped footbed and back support or, better still, have a pair of sneakers reserved for wearing in the house.”

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
VA Podiatrist and Daughter Raise Over $2,000 to Feed the Hungry

It all began when Lexi Weiss, 13, was assigned a school project: to hold a fundraising campaign for a charitable cause of her choice.  For Lexi, the decision was clear; she picked a cause she could stand behind: feeding the hungry. She went on the Food Bank of Central Virginia's website and easily set up her campaign in a matter of minutes. At the same time, Lexi's father, David Weiss, DPM, who is a musician in his spare time, was scheduled to perform at Rare Olde Times Restaurant and that spurred on an idea.

Dr. David Weiss and his daughter Lexi

Lexi and her father advertised the upcoming performance on their social media pages and Lexi made signs asking for donations that she would place in the restaurant during the performance. The surprise came when people began giving, days before the event took place! Lexi's efforts were very successful in that she was able to raise over $2,000!

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
UK Podiatrist Uses AI to Improve Bedside Manner

One of the most common complaints lodged against physicians aims at their communication skills — or lack thereof. Virti’s cloud-based training program uses speech recognition, AI, and computer-generated characters to simulate realistic interactions with patients. For instance, if a clinician asks the animated human to describe its symptoms, the AI will generate a relevant response.

(L-R) Jack Boulter and virtual patient

The AI software arrived just in time for Jack Boulter, an Exeter, England-based musculoskeletal podiatrist, to toy with it under lockdown. After Boulter’s job at a private practice temporarily shuttered, the bone injury specialist signed up for Virti’s free trial. Those in-person scenarios can “feel a bit forced” anyway, Boulter said, adding that fake patients “feel much more authentic than somebody making it up as they go along.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Nine Ways to Improve Your Patient Communications - Part 1

Research has demonstrated the connection between better communication scores and improved patient adherence, lower re-admission rates, improved mortality rates, lower malpractice risk, and reduced cost per case. No other area of medical knowledge or technical skill has a greater impact on our patients. Try some of these suggestions.

1. Develop a Welcoming Ritual

Once rapport has been established, elicit your patient’s expectations or goals and ensure there is an opportunity for all of his/her concerns to be shared. You can ask questions such as “What were you hoping we’d accomplish today?” and “Is there something else you’d like to talk about?” Once you have the patient’s agenda, summarize it by listing the issues. A 2011 study showed that collaborating on an up-front agenda did not increase visit length or the number of problems addressed per visit, but it did reduce the likelihood of patients bringing up new complaints or information late in the visit.

I too have used topical nitroglycerin gel for the treatment of my patients with chilblains for many years now as this is something I see regularly in the winter in this part of the country. Unfortunately, this product is no longer available.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Joseph C. D’Amico, DPM

Here’s a few of my pearls that I don’t think thus far have been mentioned. It should go without saying that unless there has been a thorough biomechanical examination of at least the lower extremity along with observational gait analysis, these suggestions of and by themselves are incapable of effecting optimum alignment, performance, and symptom resolution.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3
From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH

I read the post by Samuel Cox, DPM in PM News asking when DPMs will have parity with MDs and DOs. We have been using the term “parity” for too long. The time is ripe and also appropriate for us to not just seek parity but, instead, to be an integral part of the allopathic and the osteopathic community. Once and for all, we are physicians and need to be identified as such as are other medical specialists. The time is long overdue for us to be part of that “club.” That should be our goal; a strategy to accomplish that needs to be carefully and vigorously developed now.

Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH, Ft. Lauderdale, FL
