LA Podiatrist Answers Question About Arthroscopic Ankle Surgery
Question: I had arthroscopic ankle surgery about nine months ago and I finished physical therapy about four months ago, but my foot still hurts. Occasionally the pain goes away, but sometimes it hurts badly. Is this normal?
|
Dr. Tyson Green |
Answer from Tyson Green, DPM, foot and ankle specialist with Center for Orthopaedics, a division of Imperial Health, and medical staff member of West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital: This is a difficult question to answer without an actual consultation and review of your medical history, but generally speaking it is not common to still have pain so long after surgery. Arthroscopic surgery is minimally invasive and typically has few side-effects. There could be an explanation, however. Schedule a visit with your doctor as soon as possible to find out what is causing your pain.

CA Podiatrist Faces Unique Challenge in Napa Valley Marathon
A sold-out field of 3,000 entrants from 18 countries, 48 U.S. states, and Washington, D.C. will gather in California’s Napa Valley for the 37th Annual Kaiser Permanente Napa Valley Marathon on Sunday, March 1, 2015. The Napa Valley Marathon (NVM) asks each entrant to describe on their entry form their reasons for entering the race. Among the varied responses each year, many illustrate how the challenges of a 26.2-mile race spurs marathoners to undertake charitable deeds that assist others who face adversity, to overcome personal adversities themselves, or to travel the globe in search of the most compelling races.
|
Dr. William Hopkins |
Every Napa Valley Marathon participant assists important local causes. All proceeds from the Napa Valley Marathon (a non-profit organization) are donated to local charities and schools in the Napa Valley region. Numerous NVM participants, however, choose to go beyond NVM’s annual philanthropy by dedicating their race to others, often raising donations that fund the charities of their choice. Dr. William Hopkins (Corralitos, CA) is lining up for his sixth NVM after decades of running and competing. But this year’s race will pose a unique challenge for the 59-year-old podiatrist. In 2006, Hopkins had a tumor removed from his spinal cord, leaving him with residual paralysis in his lower legs.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS |
Bret Ribotsky: DPMs are audited at a higher frequency than other physicians. Is there something that each of us should add to our notes that may help assist us if we get audited?
|
Keith Greer, Esq. |
Curtis Keith Greer, Esq.: One thing I see a few podiatrists doing that I wish more would do when it comes to their notes is to have the initial presentation documented by the office staff. Having a second person collaborating in the medical record can go a very long way. It is best if the chief complaint is entered twice - once by the staff and again by the physician.

More Than Half of Meaningful Use Penalties Will Be Under $1K
The majority of physicians who are being penalized this year for not having met meaningful use requirements in previous years will forfeit less than $1000 of their Medicare reimbursement, according to data just released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
Of the 256,000 eligible professionals (EPs) subject to "payment adjustments" in 2015, the data show, 87,000 (34%) will lose $250 or less, 55,000 (21%) will give up $250 to $1,000, 36,000 (14%) will forfeit $1,000 to $2,000, and 78,000 (31%) will be fined $2,000 or more.

First U.S. Doctors' Strike in Decades
A handful of doctors providing medical services to students at UC San Diego — and their colleagues at nine other University of California campuses — went on strike in late January. It's the first time in 25 years that fully licensed doctors are picketing a U.S. employer, according to the Union of American Physicians and Dentists, which represents the physicians at the UC schools.
The work stoppage began at 7:30 a.m. and was scheduled to last one day. It involved 150 health center doctors who manage the primary care and mental health needs of students. UC San Diego said there are 10 such physicians on its campus. Dr. Amol Doshi, a staff physician at UC San Diego, said five of them work full-time while the others are part-timers. Doshi, one of four doctors in the union’s bargaining team, said the strike is needed because the UC system refuses to provide enough financial information on student health services for the union to make accurate judgments about whether resources are well-allocated.

RE: The Passing of Charlie Pope
From: Ron Werter, DPM
I just found out that Charlie Pope, sales manager from Podiatric Ultrasound, who sold many of us our ultrasound machines and who was a great friend of podiatry passed away this past Sunday. He was a man who could be trusted and will be missed.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) |
From: Stephen Musser, DPM
Is it me, or is anyone else surprised that over 60% of podiatric offices do NOT schedule an annual CDFE for their diabetic patients? Who else better than podiatrists to perform this type of examine? I'm curious as to how many ophthalmologist offices schedule an annual eye exam for their diabetic patients.
