20/20 Imaging Showcases A Diagnostic Ultrasound System
20/20 Imaging, a Konica Minolta Company, specialists in imaging and connectivity technologies, showcased SONIMAGE HS1, a cutting-edge diagnostic ultrasound system, at the NY Podiatric Clinical Conference and Exhibition. SONIMAGE HS1 provides the advantages of real time imaging of soft tissue trauma, needle placement visualization, and localization of foreign bodies. “The response to a recent PM News survey revealed that 43% of podiatrists utilize diagnostic ultrasound in their practice”, says 20/20 President, Bob Salzman.
|
|
Dr. Kenneth Meisler demonstrates SONIMAGE HS1 |
Besides fostering patient-doctor interaction during the exam, ultrasound-guided needle injections are more effective than blind procedures. The SONIMAGE HS1 provides a Simple Needle Visualization (SNV) feature which enhances the visual presence of the needle tip, increasing accuracy of the needle placement. Also, the SONIMAGE HS1 is compatible with a wide MHz range transducer which provides superior images during both deep and superficial scanning. The SONIMAGE HS1 ultrasound system is supported by comprehensive training, along with tips on assimilating ultrasound into a podiatry practice.

| QUERIES - MEDICAL/LEGAL | |
RE: Release of Medical Records
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM
If a "patient" contacts your office requesting copies of their medical records, what is the required HIPAA protocol for them to get their records? We require any patient requesting their medical records to sign a HIPAA "release of medical records" before they receive them. We prefer the patient or their legal representative (parent/guardian) to sign said release in person, but if that is not possible, what is then the next recourse? We also have had responses from other physician offices in our area that when a "patient" calls to get copies of their medical records, they just send copies with no release signed and no questions asked. Is this a HIPAA violation? I appreciate some guidance on release of medical records to a "patient" per HIPAA guidelines.
Joseph Borreggine, DPM, Charleston, IL
Editor's note: PM News does not provide legal advice. First of all, HIPAA is the minimal standard of privacy. State laws, if stricter, govern as to patient's rights. HIPAA regulations are found in Title 45 of the Code of Federal Regulation §164.508 (Uses and disclosures for which an authorization is required). A sample of an acceptable form can be found here. Physicians who release records without a signed authorization assume an unnecessary risk.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A | |
From: Martin Taubman, DPM
Thank you, Dr. Baum, for opening this topic. I pondered the question: Why are podiatrists joining orthopedic groups? To me, the more nteresting question is: Why are orthopedic groups hiring podiatrists?
The answer is simple. There aren’t enough orthopedic foot specialists available. Podiatry is now recognized as the premier profession for treating the foot and ankle. The orthopedic groups want to garner the business, not just for the foot and ankle patients, but...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B | |
From: Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM
Dr. Baum asks the (reasonable) question why DPMs would join MD orthopedic groups. I think the answer certainly is pay, even if DPMs are not paid as much as orthopedists. But there is sometimes a "separation" in pay when comparing this to multi-specialty groups: The pay of the DPM resides only in the decision of the orthopod remuneration committee if you work for only orthopedic surgeons. However, if you work for a multi-specialty group, your pay is decided by a mix of practitioners and may be more connected to your actual production. This means if your production exceeds that of other doctors, you may be paid more than them.
Patient billing is done through the MD group, which means that...
