OBITUARIES
Albert D’Angelantonio, DPM

Dr. Albert D’Angelantonio, “Dr. D” for short, was a cheerful, warm guy who often greeted new patients with a hug. But to the seven podiatric residents he mentored at Kennedy University Hospital, he was simply “Daddy.” The nickname suited the Washington Township New Jersey father of nine, one of whom followed him into the specialty.

Dr. Albert D’Angelantonio

Though D’Angelantonio had fought cancer since last spring, the 56-year-old worked through his chemotherapy treatments. Until two weeks before he died Saturday, the foot-and-ankle surgeon sat in on surgeries and fussed over his residents and patients. “He made patients feel like they were family,” said his business partner and best friend, Dr. Joseph A. Mirarchi

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
HI Podiatrist Saves Diabetic's Foot

Lisa Capozzi's nightmare started with an uncontrollable shaking and nausea during the day. By nighttime, her diabetic foot looked more like an oversized clown shoe than her foot. A nasty looking boil, oozing like slow-moving lava, had erupted on the top of her baby toe. A cut that would have almost required a microscopic examination to detect was the culprit.

Dr. Tyler Chihara

With infection threatening to take two of the digits on her left foot, she signed the release to have the only podiatrist on the island, Dr. Tyler Chihara, perform an operation to successfully remove the gooey infection from deep within her foot.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
FL Podiatrist Uses PRP for Chronic Foot Injuries

South Florida Foot & Ankle Centers’ Dr. Jonathan Cutler uses platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP) to shorten recovery time, reduce pain, and allow patients to avoid foot surgery. Platelet rich plasma treatment works by processing the patient’s own blood into a white blood cell and plasma-rich healing solution. The combination of the white blood cells and plasma is then injected into the area where the injury is located.

Dr. Jonathan Cutler

"The plasma rich healing solution has up to 10 times more healing properties than just blood alone. It starts to work right away to reverse the damage to tendons and ligaments, and heals sports injury in feet, knees, or other areas," says Cutler. Platelet rich plasma treatment is not just for sports injuries; it can also be used as a plantar fasciitis treatment, healing Achilles tendonitis, and as a foot injury treatment for various other chronic tendon injuries.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
Singapore Podiatrist Discusses Plantar Fasciitis

"Plantar fasciitis is a common injury which affects an estimated one in 10 running enthusiasts. It is caused by micro-trauma and inflammation of the fascia (fibrous connective tissue that is similar to ligaments and tendons) that runs along the bottom of your foot, from the ball to the heel," says Michael Lai, principal podiatrist in the department of podiatry at Singapore General Hospital.

Michael Lai

"Running is a high-impact sport that, if continued, will exacerbate the plantar fasciitis. If you allow this condition to become chronic, it can be very difficult to cure. Without proper care and management, you may end up living with intermittent foot pain for years. Try non-impact exercise instead, such as swimming and pool-running," says Lai.

E-HEALTH NEWS
Doctors Now Googling Patients

You wouldn’t think twice about Googling information about your doctor or dentist. But what if you found out they were also looking up information about you online? A controversial question on whether to Google, or not to Google, patients is being debated. Is it a violation of patients’ privacy or a good way for doctors to better help with care?

“This really opens up a new paradigm into how physicians and patients interact and how physicians really get to know their patients,” said Dr. Haider Warraich. Warraich admitted that he searched online for patient info. He said he, and other doctors he has discussed the issue with, usually only do it when patient safety is a concern. Warraich said before medical professionals Google a patient, they need to ask themselves: how is this going to benefit the patient? And if they don’t have a good answer for that, log off.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: Suing Medicare for Unfair Business Practices

Has anyone ever sued Medicare for unfair business practices?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Michael Turlik, DPM

The goal for the treatment of plantar fasciitis should be to reduce pain and improve function. In order to determine the most effective treatment, we should search for level-1 evidence which is valid and relevant.

Cadaver studies are not valid studies to make inferences about patient care. Making inferences about patient care using surrogate outcomes is not relevant. Podiatrists should be able to search, evaluate, and apply the best evidence on treatments they need for patients.

"Suppliers may ask you to provide the medical documentation described above on a routine basis in order to assure that Medicare will pay for these items and that your patient will not be held financially...

From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

According to the Provider Outreach and Education Department for DME MAC A, they are adding a feature on their website which should address some of the questions raised by Dr. Schaffer.

DME MAC A is adding a "physicians only" portal to its website. This will list the documentation requirements for physicians for various DME products. Echoing the posting by David Mullens, DPM, Esq, the DME MAC cannot list requirements which are contrary to Stark or other CMS requirements.

Check your DME MAC website within the next 3-4 weeks for this information.

The degree change and/or professional parity conversation has been going on since 1970-- my second year at ICPM.  I am sure that it was a topic of conversation in preceding years. The same was/is true for facility and professional services payment parity.
