PODIATRIC SIDELINES |
MI Podiatrist Now Confectioner and Chocolatier
His first career was medicine. For many years Paul Beardsley was known as Dr. Beardsley, podiatrist. Then he entered the business world as a corporate executive.

Chocolatier Paul Beardsley loves to make candy. Here he presses his secret chocolate mixture into heart-shaped forms. Mardi Suhs | Cadillac News |
But 25 years ago, Beardsley found his true calling when he and his wife Helen purchased The Sweet Shop in downtown Cadillac. He discovered that he loved making candy and chocolate, which gave him two more career titles; confectioner and chocolatier.
Still enthusiastic about making candy and chocolate after all these years, Paul said he not only loves the process of creating sweets from their many secret recipes, but that he enjoys the clientele. “No one ever comes in here mad,” he said. “When they come in here they know they are spending luxury dollars, and that makes anybody on earth happy. The fun part of making candy is that when people come in the store they are always in a good mood.”

MEDICAL MALPRACTICE NEWS |
FL Doctor Indicted Over Expert Qualifications
In a rare case, a Florida physician is facing criminal charges for allegedly lying about his qualifications when he testified as a medical expert witness in a medical liability case in Michigan. The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan filed perjury and fraud charges against Miami cardiovascular surgeon Alex Zakharia, MD, accusing the doctor of knowingly inflating his surgical experience during a deposition for a plaintiff.
The criminal indictment that stemmed from the underlying lawsuit accuses the plaintiff's expert Dr. Zakharia of falsely testifying that he was the lead surgeon in an average of 10 to 12 coronary bypass graft procedures per year in the six years leading up to the case. Hospital records the government obtained showed that he hadn't done any, according to court records.
U.S. Attorney Stephen J. Murphy, in a statement, called the physician's conduct "an abuse" of the legal system. "Those who hold themselves out as 'experts' offering testimony in legal proceedings must respect the system as well as their profession by telling the truth," he said.

QUERIES |
Query: Anterior Compartment Syndrome After Ankle Tourniquet Use
I am wondering if any podiatrist’s patients have experienced a compartment syndrome (chronic) after use of an ankle cuff. It happened to one of my patients more than six months ago and he has not responded to conservative care. Only the anterior compartment is involved, causing numbness and tingling along the superficial and deep peroneal nerve.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS |
RE: Retrocalcaneal Pain and ESWT (Keith D. Pfeifer, DPM) From: Jeffrey Miller, DPM, Christopher L. Hendrix, DPM
It has been my understanding that when any hardware is present and can be visualized in the operative field by the diagnostic ultrasound guide, ESWT is contraindicated. I have found that ESWT has been highly successful in the treatment of insertional Achilles tendonitis and in my experience even more so than utilizing ESWT for plantar fasciitis and heel spur syndrome.
Jeffrey Miller, DPM, Clifton, NJ, Drjm8@aol.com
This presents an interesting patient dilemma. In regards to this particular patient scenario, I would make sure that the return of symptoms is not due to the previous intervention. I would certainly consider an osteomyelitis workup since there is retained hardware. These anchors can "scuttle" overtime...I would also consider a stress riser/fracture differential before I subjected the patient to a high-impact ultrasound treatment that in and of itself may induce a calcaneal stress reaction. In either instance, I would consider an extended course of immobilization and even surgical revision before ESWT.
Christopher L. Hendrix, DPM, Memphis, TN, hendrix@midsouth.rr.com
