AT THE COLLEGES
WesternU Research Showcases Student Innovation

The third annual WesternU Research Symposium brought together a diverse array of disciplines and research topics in a showcase of students’ scientific exploration. Third-year College of Podiatric Medicine student Jun Heo said he is thankful for the opportunity to learn what research is about and to hone his research skills.

Jun Heo

It’s one thing to read an article and learn about facts, but it’s also another to gather your own facts and then see how they’re significant to your daily practice,” Heo said. “I want to have direction in how I should practice, and that’s why I’m driven to learn more about how to do research. As I’m learning it more and more, I realize that there are different ways of approaching research. When I was presenting, my mind was on the provider side of it, but someone commented, ‘What about the patient side?’ You can approach the same topic from a different view.”

MEDICAL MISSIONS
Podiatrists Join Operation Footprint Mission to El Salvador

Operation Footprint finished another successful mission trip to El Salvador in January 2026 at Benjamin Bloom Pediatric Hospital. This is the first of several OperationFootprint.org mission trips this year. The photo displays three generations of surgeons performing surgeries globally from all over the USA.

(L-R) Drs. Maria Cifone, Bhavesh Shah, Amol Saxena, Matt Roberts, Marc Benard, Jeff Yung, and Zeeshan Husain

The seven members treated neglected clubfeet, vertical talus, cerebral palsy contractures, along with other genetic foot and ankle conditions. They operated on seventeen feet in two days. Many supplies were donated as were the surgeons’ time and travel.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
3 Reasons You Shouldn't Consider Automated Coders

Automated coding tools enhance claim accuracy and reduce documentation burdens, but require careful implementation to avoid compliance risks.

1) If your culture becomes “trust the tool,” you can create compliance risk at scale

CAC is not a compliance program. If staff stop validating code suggestions against the actual record, a practice can systematically submit unsupported codes. OIG’s General Compliance Program Guidance repeatedly points back to basics such as controls, auditing and accountability for billing and coding risk areas.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
6 Common Tax Mistakes to Avoid This Tax Season

To help you avoid a shock on filing day, here are six common ways you could be paying more income taxes than necessary.

3A.  Your W-4 withholding is too low and outdated

Whether you’re starting a new role or settled into a long-term position, you should regularly review your Form W-4 (Withholding). This document tells your employer exactly how much to send to the IRS and state authorities on your behalf throughout the year.

If your tax withholding is out of date and too low, you might be building a debt to the IRS. Various life changes can increase your tax bill if your withholding isn't adjusted at least annually, like:
  • Getting divorced or separated. Single and married-filing-separately statuses typically carry a lower standard deduction than those available to joint filers. Additionally, married separate filers might not qualify for certain tax breaks (like certain education tax breaks).
  • Getting a pay raise. While a promotion, bonus, or raise is great news, that extra income could push you into a higher tax bracket, making your current withholding levels insufficient.
  • Having a child leave home. When a child turns 17, they no longer qualify for the $2,200 child tax credit, even if they still live at home (though temporary absences, such as college, are exempt from this rule).

PODIATRY AND AI
RE: Podiatry’s Future with AI as the New Market Force
From: Bryce Karulak, DPM

Commonly, I hear that we should have a broader license and that we should have pay parity with MD/DOs; both of which I agree with whole heartily. However, what everyone seems to be ignoring is the future of medicine with respect to AI. AI has already been shown to be superior in diagnosis and treatment for any number of diseases that a primary care typically treats or at least initially is the treating physician. Elon Musk, in Fortune Magazine last month, stated that by 2030, there will be more Optimus Robots that are far superior to human surgeons and that it is pointless to go to medical school. Considering what this one man has done and accomplished in his life, I tend to take what he says seriously.

So let’s play out the natural progression of what happens to podiatry when this large over- taking market force starts squeezing human physician access. When you can go to a pharmacy and see an AI model that can perform vitals and...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY) - PART 1A
From: James DiResta, DPM

It is beyond frustrating in reading recent comments regarding a plenary license for podiatrists. Dr. Olaf remarks how far we have come as a profession and we should be satisfied. He states the reality is orthopedists and others never pick up a stethoscope and frankly they know, like most specialists, to stay in their lane. I would agree but as time has gone on, we in completing our single track medical education have found ourselves stuck in our own lane; but it is not a lane in the same bowling alley as other medical and surgical specialists as we are left inferior to our peers and unable to play on the same field. The big picture has left us not being a full member as we lack a full general medical education before pursuing residency.

Trying to make this deficit up during our post-graduate time to get us to play on the same field as the big boys and girls is not working as no organization or licensing board will grant us an equal plenary license. We need to fix this issue and time is of the essence and the DO route as proposed by Dr. Tomczak is the most doable I have heard to date!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY) - PART 1B
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

Larry, let me thank you again for again sharing your impressive CV with me and the other 21,000 readers of PM News. The thing is, Larry, not many of us have a resume as long or inspiring as yours. When we graduated, many graduates did not match to a residency. Even those who matched were not assured of a surgical program and only a few attained a PSR 24+, a real rarity. Very few podiatrists eventually secured an academic appointment, a full professorship, and yet enjoyed the thrills of private practice. A limited number became residency directors, fewer podiatrists regularly published, and a smaller minority became lecturers. Yes, Larry, we were the lucky soldiers of the 1980s and ‘90s and were truly fulfilled in our profession, but we were the far and few between podiatrists. I hear from classmates who are now hanging up their Dremels and nail nippers with the catch phrase, “If I knew then what I know now, I would have done it differently and not gone into podiatry.”

Just because every current graduate gets a three-year residency does not mean they all finish training with...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY)
From: Joel Lang, DPM

I hope no one is taking the recurring tax advice to heart and doing their taxes themselves. I think you would mostly all agree that foot problems should be left to the experts; namely DPMs. You similarly should leave tax filings to the experts as well; namely CPAs.

Even after I completed my (CFP) financial planning course, which included an entire section on taxes, I knew that I would never do taxes either for myself or any clients. The system is too complex and the rules change all the time with changing deductibles, new tables, different minimums and maximums, etc. Being in practice makes your tax return infinitely more complicated than the simple 1040 form. So do family issues such as divorce, child support, alimony and financial issues such as long and short term capital gains and losses, depreciation tables, purchases and sales of property, etc.

I personally have never done my own taxes, even though I was "theoretically" trained. Only persons who do taxes full-time should be entrusted with your return. Then, if there is a subsequent question or problem, you have someone to rely upon. The cost of having someone else do taxes is about what you might charge for one or two office visits. Why would you spend hours doing your own taxes when you would not spend hours with a patient for that same amount of money? Better to let an accountant do it and spend that time with your family.
