AT THE COLLEGES

Nelson Appointed Interim Dean at Barry University

Barry University has announced the appointment of John (Jack) Nelson, DPM, as Interim Dean of the School of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Nelson, a member of the Barry community since 1988, will continue to work closely with faculty, staff and students in his new position. “I am honored to assume this role,” said Nelson. “I think we can make a positive difference and improve the roles of both the school of podiatric medicine and physician assistant program.”

Dr. John Nelson

Aside from his new position, Nelson is also the Associate Dean of Clinics and oversees the clinical training of podiatric medical students at local area hospitals. A graduate of Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and undergraduate of Rutgers University, Nelson is also an associate professor of podiatric medicine and serves as faculty advisor for the Pi Delta Honor Society at Barry.

Dr. Nelson replaces Dr. Chet A. Evans, who left the university after 22 years as dean. Evans was instrumental in the development of several graduate programs, most notably the physician assistant program. He is also well known for his work furthering the profession of podiatric medicine at the local, state and national level.

MEETING NEWS

SOS Workshop Proves that Staff Training Can Be Fun

Who says staff training has to be boring? Not according to the attendees that participated in the recent SOS Podiatric Medical Staff Training Workshop held at the Houston Airport Marriott on Feb. 6th. They'll tell you that learning can be fun, re-energizing and beneficial to  practices.

Attendees at the SOS Podiatric Medical Staff Training Workshop

Under the instruction of Lynn Homisak, PRT, Coordinator of Workshop, attendees (consisting of clinical and administrative podiatric medical assistants, managers/doctors) spent the day learning how to maximize their roles by focusing on the importance of quality patient care, time and risk management, job duties and responsibilities, improved flow and efficiency strategies, front office skills, basic podiatric anatomy and terminology, as well as other educational topics. Interactive role-playing, live discussions and a hands-on DME application session (led by Dr. Josh White of Safestep) were also part of the full-day workshop.

Podiatric Economic Stimulus Seminars:
Better Patient Outcomes and Higher Practice Profits!!!

If you think that practice challenges are many and the solutions are few, it’s time to reserve your seat at the Comprehensive Orthopedic Management of Lower Extremity Ailments, seminar series presented by Langer Biomechanics. This 1 ½ day program will improve your diagnostic and therapeutic skills and contribute substantially to your practice income. The program has been approved for 11.75 CME’s. Seminars are being held in Los Angeles, New York, Orlando, Dallas, Chicago and Philadelphia. Seating is very limited. Click Here to reserve yours or to find out more information.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Stand Out at a Networking Event

Want to seem like the most interesting person in the room? Master this tactic: Be interested in others. Here are some ways to express sincere interest in those around you:

Compliment. Do you like someone’s outfit? Admire a piece of jewelry? Want to copy someone’s haircut? You can comment on or ask questions about other people’s appearance without knowing them. Of course, you should not make critical comments or ask about anything too personal.

Create an opening. Signal your interest in starting a conversation. Ask an open question like “So, what keeps you busy during the day?” and the person is likely to respond by talking about work, family, hobbies or any number of other topics. Listen for common interests and then ask more questions to keep the conversation flowing.

QUERIES (CLINICAL)

Query: Dilated Venous Structure

My patient is a 27 y/o female  with painful 1st IMS, left foot of 6 months duration. No trauma. Painful with and without shoes. The physical exam was unremarkable except for pain on palpation within the 1st IMS. Pain is pinpoint, with no radiating qualities. No edema or discoloration. X-rays negative. MRI revealed "dilated venous structure" within 1st IMS....The location does correlate clinically. Has anyone encountered this pathology? and if so, what treatment is recommended? My research reveals sclerotherapy or surgical excision are the main treatment options. In regard to sclerotherapy, what compound is recommended, how much, how often, etc?

RE: Restoring Skin Tone/Color Post-op (Mark H. Sugar, DPM)
From: Simon Young, DPM

Traumatically-induced vitiligo might be a concern. Ideally, wait at least 1 year. Make sure she is not wearing constrictive shoes which irritate the surgical site. If all else fails, consider make up or even tattooing the color.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1

RE: How to Handle Junk Faxes (Paul Rosen, DPM )
From: Richard A. Simmons, DPM

From junkfax.org: The Federal law passed in 1991 known as the TCPA makes it illegal to send any material transmitted via facsimile that advertises the commercial availability or quality of any property, goods, or services which is transmitted to any person without that person's prior express invitation or permission. If the fax was deliberately sent to you (as most junk faxes are), federal law entitles you to recover a minimum of $500 and, depending on the judge's discretion, up to $1,500 for each such fax that you receive.

Unlike what some businesses may tell you, until just recently, there was no "established business relationship (EBR) exemption" from the law. Unfortunately, in July 2005, Congress decided people weren't getting enough junk faxes so they decided to add an EBR exemption so that businesses could send you unwanted advertising at your expense.

So, if they send you COMMERCIAL ADVERTISING by fax without your prior consent, they may be liable. Political statements and fundraising faxes are OK (guess you know who wrote THAT law).

RE: Concierge Podiatry Services (Alan Mauser, DPM)
From: Dennis Shavelson, DPM

I have dropped out of all plans but Medicare (one at a time over years). I see 15 or so patients. I give patients the same time, energy and service I always have (that is why I had to drop out of plans). I do in-office dispensing. I have reduced overhead. I do less surgery and dispense more orthotics, all with higher fees. I have a website that markets for patients that I want to see. I am not boutique. I am an out-of-network participating podiatrist.

Most important, now that a couple of years have gone by, my pleased patients refer others like them. I work less and profit more. Podiatry continues to be very good to me and my family.
