NYCPM Student Voted President-Elect of APMSA
NYCPM student Karan Sharma, Class of 2024, was voted President-Elect of APMSA at the recent mid-winter House of Delegates meeting in Nashville. He will serve one year as President-Elect, and then serve as President the following year. Previously an APMSA Alternate Delegate for his class, Mr. Sharma as President will sit on the APMSA Executive committee, APMSA Board of Trustees, Strategic Planning committee and run the APMSA house of delegates meeting. He will be a voting member at the APMA House of Delegates meeting.

When he becomes president, Mr. Sharma hopes to overcome the perceived disconnect among students at the nine schools of podiatric medicine. He wants to bring them together, so they might learn from each other, communicate and benefit. He would like to establish a delegate-exchange program, and perhaps create a week-long open house (maybe tied to the residency open houses) that would foster communication and exchange.

VT Podiatrist Joins Copley Orthopedic Team
Podiatrist Kevin McNamara, DPM has joined the Mansfield Orthopaedics team at Copley Hospital. He joins podiatrist Ciara Hollister, DPM and the orthopedic team. Dr. McNamara earned his doctor of podiatric medicine from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed his residency in podiatric surgery at Frankford Hospitals, also in Philadelphia.

Following his residency, he founded podiatry departments at two hospitals and developed podiatry at a third, all in Vermont. His affiliations include Gifford Medical Center, Cottage Hospital, and Central Vermont Medical Center.

Dermfoot Holds Successful Live Meeting
A successful live Dermfoot 2022 took place in Chantilly VA, which welcomed doctors from Israel, Colombia, and Canada, as well as from other U.S. States. For many, this was their first LIVE in-person event in two years. Kristen Paoli, Dermfoot's chief administrative officer worked tirelessly for many months putting it all together. Drs. Bryan Markinson and Joel Morse worked with the scientific planning committee to deliver the scientific program. Podiatric lectures were headed up by Drs. Markinson, Dock Dockery, and Rob Conenello.

The meeting concluded with Dr. David Armstrong who spoke on diabetes and cancer as equivalents, a new thought process. A Kahoot! Quiz at the meeting provided amusement and game-based learning. Planning has already begun for DERMfoot 2023, March 16-19.

Tips to Survive February - Part 1
With only 28 days, February is a short month but it can still add to physician burnout. Here are some ways that physicians can treat February the same as any other month in terms of maintaining an effective work/life balance:
1). Plan to exercise several times a week, even going so far as scheduling the activities on your personal as well as professional calendar. When an activity is scheduled, it tends to occur, much more so than a vague notion that you will hit the gym, or take a long walk when you get home.

Query: Fidelis and Callus Debridement
We have been receiving denials on callus debridement codes (CPT 11055, CPT 11056, CPT 11057) from Fidelis. They are stating that the diagnosis code is incorrect. We are using I70.203. We are not using a callus code as all other carriers recognize the I70.203 as valid. Is anyone also having this problem? Does anyone know what to do to obtain reimbursement?

Response: My first recommendation is to contact the carrier and see if they can offer more information. When it comes to denial messages, there are usually a limited number of choices loaded onto their computer as there is not a denial message for every possible denial scenario. Therefore, the denial message might be “close” but not necessarily 100% accurate.
Secondly, check the carrier’s policy regarding CPT 1105X. This will tell you which codes they accept. Each carrier can have some discretion as to which ICD-10 codes it wishes to accept. In the appeal process , especially at the Administrative Law Judge level, you can bring in other carriers’ policies to show that your particular carrier is an outlier.
Lastly, most carriers I am aware of want a podiatric code (nail or callus) and then a qualifying patient “risk” (diabetes, PVD, neuropathy, etc.) or pain code. Having one code without the other, I have not found to be a payable situation.
