Pain in Runner's Feet Should be Evaluated ASAP: FL Podiatrist
“Most people do not realize how important their feet are until they have a foot problem,” Dr. Matthew B. Werd said. Werd is an accomplished athlete who has finished multiple marathons (including Boston and Chicago), 40 cycling “Centuries,” and more than 100 triathlons (including the Hawaii Ironman World Championship). He knows, personally and professionally, how very important healthy feet are to athletic success - particularly for runners.
|
|
Dr. Matthew Werd |
“Runners and athletes should be aware that foot pain of any type is not normal, and that any signs of redness, swelling, warmth, pain, compensation, and excessive tightness should be evaluated by a sports podiatrist as soon as possible before further injury occurs,” Dr. Werd advised.

Record-Breaking Snowstorm Can't Stop NY Clinical Conference
Despite a record-breaking blizzard, over 3,000 DPMs, MDs, podiatric assistants, professors, students and residents from across the country and internationally gathered to kick-off the new year at the NYSPMA Foundation for Podiatric Medicine’s NY16 Podiatric Clinical Conference and Exhibition. Dr. Ross Taubman presents at lunchtime symposium |
Over 300 exhibitors were onsite featuring the latest in medical devices, products, and services. NY16 also marked the first time that attendees had the opportunity to interact and visit with exhibitors during small, interactive Lunch Learning Labs and Break Learning Labs. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) is providing complimentary access to online CPME-approved courses for those who, due to the storm, may have missed continuing medical education hours. The NYSPMA 2017 Podiatric Clinical Conference and Exhibition is scheduled for January 27-29, 2017.

Smart Socks Alert Diabetics When Feet are at Risk for Ulcers
Researchers at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and their colleagues have developed a machine-washable, pressure sensitive sock that can help patients with diabetic neuropathy tell when they are putting their feet at risk for ulcers.
|
|
SenseGO sock |
The SenseGO sock contains micro-fabricated pressure sensors that can register when inappropriate pressure is put on a diabetic patient’s foot and relays that pressure data to a connected smartphone app, which can then alert the patient to attend to his or her foot and alleviate the pressure.

NZ Podiatrist Must Take Anger Management Classes
A senior podiatrist who attacked his ex-wife's partner has escaped suspension, but must attend anger management classes. Stefan Edwards, who is president of the College of Podiatric Surgeons, pleaded guilty to assault at the Tauranga District Court after the incident in late 2014. The court was told that after having a few drinks, Edwards drove to his ex-wife's home and tooted repeatedly, before hurriedly driving off. Her partner then drove to the home of Edwards, who, without provocation, punched the man five or six times.

Query: Pruritic, Erythematous, and Macular Lesions of Palms and Soles
A 24 year old Iranian male presented with a four-week history of pruritic, erythematous, and macular lesions to his palms and soles. Pruritis started for one week on his palms and progressed to pain and pruritis of his palms and feet. The patient is a businessman who travels internationally on a regular basis to Middle Eastern countries. No macular or erythematous lesions were noted on exam today, however, edema was present to medial, lateral, and posterior calcaneus bilaterally. Pain is present to the heels bilaterally.
|
|
Pruritic, erythematous, and macular lesions of palms and soles |
The patient is a healthy, young male without a significant medical or surgical history. The patient denies a history of being in wooded areas, near livestock, or knowing any friends or family members who have experienced similar symptoms. The patient has seen multiple doctors, including two internists and two dermatologists over the past three weeks for this condition. Standard blood testing was taken, including rheumatologic work-up. These were all found to be negative. I would appreciate input as to diagnosis and treatment.

RE: Is the Need for Foreign Graduates Changing?
From: Ray Scheimer, DPM
I think this article is very enlightening since we do not have enough residency slots for all of our graduates, yet Congress had no problem passing a bill to expand slots for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and graduates of U.S. medical schools.
