PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS |
Frostbite a Particular Hazard to Toes: IL Podiatrist
Old Man Winter has been a bigger pain in the toes and fingers this year. Extreme cold temperatures and wind chill have put Central Illinoisans at greater risk of a rare but potentially devastating condition. "Frostbite can occur in less than 30 minutes" if the wind chill factor is 18 degrees below zero, said Dr. Carl Cortese, a podiatrist with Cortese Foot and Ankle Clinic.
|
Dr. Carl Cortese |
"At the first sign of coldness, the blood goes to the vital organs," Cortese explained. "The body is trying to preserve its major organs so it takes blood from the extremities. That's a danger to the tips of the fingers, toes, earlobes, and the tip of the nose," Cortese said.

TX Podiatrist Provides Shoe-Buying Advice
Ill-fitting shoes can cause your feet problems like bunions, corns, hammertoes, and crossover toes. If a pair of shoes doesn’t feel right in the store, don't buy the shoes, no matter how much you like their style. They may never break in, and they can damage your feet. "For a normal foot, anything you feel comfortable in is fine as long as it has a rigid heel, some built-in support, and cushioning," says Dr. Jeffrey N. Bowman, a podiatrist in Houston.
|
Dr. Jeffrey Bowman |
"A 5-inch spike heel isn't going to do anybody any good," Bowman says. "It forces all the weight to the front of the foot and will cause pain." High heels also put you on the fast track to bunions, corns, and other problems.

PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS |
CA Podiatrist Out-Raises Opponents in 4th Quarter
Campaign finances are coming into play as the race for the 25th Congressional District seat heats up. The fourth-quarter funding reports that came out Jan. 31 show Democrat Dr. Lee Rogers, a Simi Valley resident and podiatrist, has raised far more than state Sen. Steve Knight (R-Palmdale) and former state Sen. Tony Strickland. Rogers came in with $93,940, with Strickland following at $39,755 and Knight trailing at $21,888. “These numbers reflect the constituency’s desire to send an outsider to Congress rather than two career Sacramento politicians,” said Rogers in a news release.
|
Dr. Lee Rogers |
Rogers’ fourth-quarter total included almost $69,000 in individual donations and $25,700 from political action committees. For Strickland, $36,255 came from individual donors and $3,500 from political action committees. Knight’s $21,888 came strictly from individual donations.

E- HEALTH NEWS |
Deadline Extended for Attesting to Meaningful Use in EHR Incentive Program
The CMS is extending the deadline for physicians and other eligible professionals to attest to meaningful use for the Medicare EHR incentive program for the 2013 reporting year and is offering some hospitals a second chance at receiving payment—as well as possible relief from the program's 2015 penalties for failing to comply in 2013.
The new deadline for physicians is 11:59 p.m. March 31, pushed back from Feb. 28. The criteria still must have been met by Dec. 31, 2013, the end of the reporting period for the incentive payments. “This extension will allow more time for providers to submit their meaningful-use data and receive an incentive payment for the 2013 program year, as well as avoid the 2015 payment adjustment,” the CMS said in a news release.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 2 |
From: Brian Zale, DPM
Assuming you do all the off-loading, and conservative care, this becomes a surgical no-brainer. Since the chances of iatrogenic hallux valgus may occur, you simply do a distal 1st metatarsal osteotomy with internal fixation and remove the sesamoid. I've done it many times with excellent results and happy patients.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (ICD-10) |
RE: Preparing for ICD-10
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM
Today, we started bridging our ICD-9 codes that we commonly use in our practice to the new ICD-10CM coding system. This is so I could get a handle on how to convert the current codes we are using to ICD-10. I am not billing with these codes, but rather just doing the conversion when I am done seeing the patient. Our practice has used the APMA coding resource center developed by Dr. Goldsmith and Dr. Freedman's coding conversion manual to generate our own codes that we would use in our office.
The initial process of conversion was rather time-consuming, but when it was done, it contained...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) |
From: Brian Kashan, DPM
After having just read the information on the SGR Repeal and Medicare Provider Payment Modernization Act on this site, I can only find myself reading between the lines and anticipating the worst. Any time that the government proposes a plan that seems to have an increase and stability in our reimbursements, we are in for trouble. Is it naïve to think that they are truly interested in our viability and growth versus cost-cutting and reduction in our services?
The proposed .5% annual update, I assume, is supposed to be an incentive for us to be happy with the program. Of course, the penalties we may endure for not doing other things like PQRS,...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEET THE MASTERS) |
RE: Informative Discussion of Social Medical and Marketing
From: Steven J. Kaniadakis, DPM
I strongly recommend the last "Meet The Masters" show, an interview with Mr. Shawn McAskill about using social media. It was incredible and showed how valuable this medium is. He discussed how to integrate this new technology to gain value in your medical practice, branding, and more. If you do not have the interests or the time, then send the link to your staff. This sort of media shall become a key role in podiatric success as "change" affects the profession and healthcare interactions.
If you have not already assigned a staff member on this task, then it might be a wise idea to think about adding this to your practice management program. Patient satisfaction might well be improved with this edge.
