PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
IL Podiatry Supergroup Expands to IN and WI
A Des Plaines institution and national center for foot care is now exporting that care throughout the region. The Weil Foot & Ankle Institute has recently expanded to include 25 local practices across Chicagoland, NW Indiana, and Southern Wisconsin. "The result," says CEO Dr. Lowell Weil Jr. DPM "is better quality, lower cost care for patients throughout Chicagoland."
|
(L-R) Drs. Lowell Weil, Sr, Wenjay Sung, and Lowell Weil, Jr. |
The expansion comes as new high-deductible insurance plans, with higher out-of-pocket costs, have produced more demanding and more cost-conscious consumers. To meet their demands Weil Foot & Ankle Institute is transplanting the same metrics and efficiencies that made the clinic pioneers.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW |
PA Podiatrist Sentenced to 8 years in $5M Healthcare Fraud
A former Delaware County podiatrist was sentenced Tuesday to eight years in federal prison after pleading guilty to nearly $5 million in healthcare fraud, an amount he must now pay back. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Philadelphia said Dr. Stephen A. Monaco, of A Foot Above Podiatry in Havertown, submitted fraudulent bills to Medicare and Medicaid for that amount for podiatric procedures that were not performed or ones that were not medically necessary between January 2008 and Oct. 31, 2014.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
6 Signs It's Time to Fire a Staffer - Part 3
Here are six signs that it is time to fire an employee:
3. They ignore warnings. When an employee does something wrong, you sit them down in private and explain the way you expect your employees to work. If it happens again, you write it up and keep it in their employee file. For this kind of written documentation, I ask them to sign it so it's clear they understand. Even still, some seem to think this is only an exercise on protocol and continue as if nothing happened. These employees will do whatever they want and don't care about what you are asking them to do.
As a boss, I am not trying to control the empire: I am trying to keep my patients safe and create a constructive environment for doing that. If you reach the third warning, that should be a firing. Three strikes and you're out doesn't just happen in baseball.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) |
From: Gerald Mauriello Jr., DPM
I could not agree with you more, Dr. Kass. The current scope of practice in New York is absolutely ridiculous. What makes it worse, is that when you call the state, the woman who answers the telephone cannot tell me exactly what I need to do in order to achieve it. It is very confusing to someone trying to navigate the process on their own. As a new practitioner in New York State, I find this process almost laughable.
Just like in orthopedics, those who complete a residency, log the required cases, and achieve licensure in their respective state should then be allowed to practice their specialty. Instead, in New York, you are held captive and not allowed to practice unless you achieve this board certification. I thought my residency trained me to be the foot and ankle surgeon I am today. How does being board qualified or certified matter? Thoughts?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) |
Dr. Kehr was one of my professors at PCPM. He was a scholar, a true gentleman, and a friend to everyone.
Paul M Taylor, DPM, Silver Spring, MD
Dr. Kehr was my instructor at PCPM. Nice guy and a gentleman. He taught us the basics of radiology including the ins and outs of film exposure and processing. This came in very handy early in my practice prior to the general use of automatic processing.
