INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY IN THE NEWS

Camilla (Duchess of Cornwall,) Proud to be Patron of Podiatry

The wife of the Prince of Wales was in Stratford last week to open a new centre at the University of East London. Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, as she is officially known, was at the Centre for Clinical Education, part of the School of Health and Bioscience.

Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, learns about podiatry.

She toured the centre which will focus on podiatry, physiotherapy, complementary medicine and sports science. The VIP spent nearly two hours in the building, meeting staff and students, as well as guests, including Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales and Olympian Tessa Sanderson.

UEL's clinical facilities for podiatry, run in partnership with Newham Primary Care Trust, are said to be among the best in the country. She said: "Thank you all for showing me round today and teaching me all about feet. I think this is a fantastic place, and I'm very proud to be a patron of podiatry."

PODIATRIC SIDELINES

CA Podiatrist Now a Top Celebrity Photographer

A new talent has emerged from the depths of the operating room: Dr. Mark Valinsky, a board-certified foot surgeon now advancing in the world of celebrity photography, was asked by Hollywood Lofts and LA Direct Magazine to debut his vintage classic band photographs this Thursday, February 7. These photographs, taken in the mid-1970s, were shot with the eye and skill of the surgeon Valinsky is, and feature the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, the Eagles, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, the Steve Miller Band and Kansas -- just the legends -- and Dr. Mark does them justice! 15 - 20 framed and mounted selections from his collection will be displayed, a sample of which can be viewed at www.ValinskyPhotoImages.com

Dr. Mark Valinsky

Of his show at the Lofts, Valinsky says, "I started at the top and I'm working my way up! Seriously, as a podiatrist, I know the value of having your feet firmly planted in reality, but your head, spirit, and ideals in the sky!" Having put his best foot backward with these shots, Valinsky now forges forward with the same work ethic he mustered as a surgeon, ever seeking the perfect photograph of the legend that was or will be.

Entertainment Editor, De Lois Jacobs of Fashion Vampire Magazine, says, "I always see Dr. Valinksy shooting at every red carpet I attend. Mark is one of the top celebrity photographers."

MEDICARE NEWS

Bush Using 'Meat Ax' on Medicare Budget: Baucus

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) at a hearing accused the Bush administration of taking a “meat ax” to Medicare by proposing $183 billion in cuts to the program over the next five years. Hacking apart the Medicare and Medicaid programs won’t solve the problem of rising healthcare costs, Baucus told HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt, who testified before the panel. The president’s fiscal 2009 budget proposal also includes a $17 billion reduction to Medicaid over the next five years.

Leavitt said that the budget request represents proposed savings, not cuts, to the entitlement programs, and that the ultimate purpose is to slow the rate of growth and reduce premiums to Medicare beneficiaries by $6.2 billion over the next five years.

RE: Tetanus Coding (Susan Hansen)
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

Susan Hansen asks a question regarding coding for a tetanus toxoid vaccine combined with diphtheria vaccine. Although her question pertained primarily to coding, there is a further question that should be asked. Are we allowed to give diphtheria vaccinations? Is it out of scope for podiatry? The issue is further complicated by the fact that the combined vaccine is sometimes less expensive than pure tetanus toxoid vaccine and at times it is hard if not impossible to get pure tetanus toxoid vaccines.

I feel that you are doing the patient a favor by giving him or her the combined vaccinations, but could someone point a finger at us and say, 'hey you are treating something that has nothing to do with the foot?"

Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY, Elliotu@aol.com

RE: Videotaping of Surgery (Daniel Chaskin, DPM)
From: David E. Samuel, DPM

You have got to be kidding me. I don't know about the majority of people out there, but unless you have money and time to burn or a resident with nothing better to do, I can't see how any OR has the time to allow you to set up your cameras, etc to videotape your surgeries. Also, and especially, why would you ever want your surgery videotaped for anyone to see down the line. Unless you are doing a special case used for teaching purposes, you will be a plaintiff attorney's best friend, as there will always be someone who finds your techniques not up to snuff. Whatever possible advantage you think there may be for doing this, I guarantee you there are more disadvantages.
