PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
5 Reasons You Should Consider Automated Coders, 3 Reasons You Shouldn't

Automated coding tools enhance claim accuracy and reduce documentation burdens, but require careful implementation to avoid compliance risks.

3) You want fewer preventable denials tied to code-pair edits and unit limits

Denials are expensive rework. Tools that incorporate edit logic can help practices catch avoidable issues before submission, particularly around bundling edits and medically unlikely units. For a current reference on how Medicare’s edit logic is applied, many billing teams keep the annual Medicare NCCI Policy Manual handy.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
6 Common Tax Mistakes to Avoid This Tax Season

To help you avoid a shock on filing day, here are six common ways you could be paying more income taxes than necessary.

1B. Here are a few common tax deductions and credits with income phaseouts:
  • Student loan interest deduction. For 2025 income taxes, the phase-out begins at a modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) of $85,000 for single filers and $170,000 for married couples filing jointly.
  • Traditional individual retirement account (IRA) deductions. If you're covered by a retirement savings plan at work, your ability to deduct traditional IRA contributions starts to phase out at a MAGI of $79,000 for single filers and $126,000 for married couples filing jointly (for tax year 2025).
  • "Senior bonus" deduction. Adults age 65 and older might qualify for this temporary tax break, but their income phase-out is $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for joint returns.

SOLE PURPOSE BY SAVANNAH SANTIAGO, DPM
What Pathologists Wish Podiatrists Knew

Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:

1.  Histology and Nail Samples

The correct method for preparing of a typical fungal nail sample is as follows: begin by wiping the nail with alcohol. Then, debride and discard the distal nail, as fungal infection typically penetrates deeply within the nail, and the distal portion of the nail often yields false positives. For a good nail sample, you would want at least 3-6mm of nail. Discarding the very distal tip of the nail may seem counterintuitive, however, the fungus moves move proximal towards the nail matrix, so the most amount of fungus can be found there, proximally. There is fungus everywhere in the world and just a tiny bit of fungus under the distal nail is not a true fungal infection.

There are different approaches depending on the suspected type of nail fungus. For proximal subungual fungus, a punch biopsy near the base of the nail is recommended. Superficial white fungus is one of the few exceptions where sending shavings or scrapings is adequate. In the case of a severely dystrophic onychomycotic nail, it's best to remove the entire nail. However, it's important to note that some patients may not agree with this method of sample collection.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY)
From: Sev Hrywnak, DPM, MD

Podiatry has historically focused on foot and ankle pathology, but the evolving healthcare landscape demands a wholesale shift in how this profession prepares its graduates. A limited license that restricts practice to foot and ankle care constrains the potential impact podiatrists can have on population health, collaboration, and cost-effective care delivery. Here are key reasons for pursuing planetary/full licensure and broader scope:

Competitive relevance in a crowded market: Healthcare professions are expanding scope to meet comorbidity management and aging populations. Licenses that affirm competency in a wider set of musculoskeletal and systemic health issues differentiate practitioners and attract patients seeking comprehensive foot-to-knee care in a single...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Gary Smith, DPM

I agree with Dr. Jacobs. I would add that the edema may also be caused by lumbar mediated neuropathy. It is not a bad idea to order an EMG of the lower extremity and maybe even a lumbar MRI. A history of lower back pain is not necessary in these cases. Sometimes the edema or lower leg issues are the first symptoms. I would consider this diagnosis if the neuropathy or edema is different from leg to leg. Difficulty walking is also an indication of lumbar disease, especially if one leg is weaker than the other.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS)
From: Steven Finer, DPM

I provided my cell phone number and most patients used it properly. They contacted me for emergencies and I met them in the office or the hospital.

There were a few who thought they were my friend, calling with non-podiatric questions. I explained the situation and most understood.
