PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1
PA Podiatrist Joins St. Luke’s University Health Network

St. Luke's podiatric surgeon Elizabeth Lindvig, DPM planned to be a horse trainer. She rode in international competitions and trained U.S. Olympic Equestrian Team's horses left at home when their riders competed abroad. However, her career direction changed in her senior year of college when she followed the advice of several horse owners and turned her attention to podiatry.

Dr. Elizabeth Lindvig

Dr. Lindvig recently joined St. Luke's Podiatry in Tamaqua, PA after graduating from the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine and completing extensive post-graduate training in foot surgery at Bryn Mawr Hospital.

HEALTHCARE LEGISLATION
Bill Introduced to Reverse 2.83% Physician Medicare Cuts

A bipartisan coalition of 10 House lawmakers introduced legislation on Jan. 31 aimed at reversing a 2.83% Medicare physician payment reduction and implementing a 2% increase to help stabilize physician practices and protect patient access to care. If enacted, the Medicare Patient Access and Practice Stabilization Act would retroactively nullify the 2.83% cut that took effect on Jan. 1, with changes set to take effect on April 1. A similar proposal garnered bipartisan, bicameral backing in December, but Congress ultimately failed to act on it before the end of the session.

The American Medical Association has strongly endorsed the measure, pledging to collaborate with lawmakers to incorporate it into forthcoming legislation to extend federal government funding beyond the March 14 deadline.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
10 Small Ways to Provide Great Customer Service to Patients

Providing great customer service to patients will make them feel like you are all on the same team, they will be more apt to send referrals, and they will be more willing to make sure you are paid for the time and effort you have spent on their care. Here are 10 ways to provide excellent service to your patients outside of the exam room:

10. Treat your employees (and each other) like customers.

It is a little like leading by example, if you treat your employees with great service, they will be more equipped to model that for your patients.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Stephen Isham, DPM

It is with profound sorrow that I share the passing of our beloved colleague, mentor, and  friend, Dr. Stephen A. Isham — a visionary pioneer whose unwavering dedication revolutionized minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for the foot and ankle. His departure leaves an irreplaceable void in our hearts and in the medical community, yet his legacy will forever illuminate the path he forged.

Dr. Stephen Isham

Dr. Isham was not merely a surgeon; he was a trailblazer. His innovative techniques and relentless pursuit of excellence transformed patient outcomes, setting new standards for precision, recovery, and...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Where are Our Thought Leaders?
From: Lawrence Rubin, DPM

Recent posts in PM News have made it clear that podiatrists are not the only providers competing for business in today's new foot healthcare marketplace. There are at least a dozen other professional and business entities vying for a piece of the foot care dollar. If our thought leaders do not come forward and recognize this, and if they fail to take swift actions to make sure podiatrists are the preferred providers of all the values  included in value-based foot care, the future of our profession will be perilous. I have brought this to the attention of the APMA  but so far, no response.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2A
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

Since late 2022, I have been submitting letters to PM News and Dr. Barry Block has graciously been publishing them for the profession to read. There have been two main topics my submissions have fallen into; 1. The issue of board certification and the ramifications between the haves and have nots and; 2. The severe decrease in the number of students in the podiatry classes at the eleven schools.

An honorable source who has nothing to gain by lying has informed me that as of last week there were approximately 300 applicants to all the podiatry schools. This may not include the Texas school in El Paso which has its own application service outside of AACPM. The number 300 refers to applicants going through AACPM. Schools offer acceptance and seats. We have been trying to tell the profession that there won’t be a need to address the first topic of conversation, board certification soon. There won’t be anyone to...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2B
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM

Recruitment? It is indeed a sad day that our colleges have been compelled to develop strategies  to enhance student recruitment efforts. It is depressing to hear a call for practitioners to make efforts to recruit students. PM News readers have expressed an eclectic universe of explanations proposing the etiology for the lack of interest in our profession. Many if not most of these explanations are reasonable, and perhaps the sum total of all of these propositions explains the current disinterest in podiatry among college undergraduates. Facts are what they are. There is a demonstratable lack of interest in pursuing a DPM degree. The numbers speak for themselves.

There is no issue that the services provided by a podiatrist are needed. The issue is whether a podiatrist is needed to provide those services. As other PM News contributors have noted, services provided by a podiatrist may be provided by orthopedic surgeons, general surgeons,...
