What to Look for in Socks for Sweaty Feet: NY & CA Podiatrists

“Wearing the right socks can help reduce sweaty feet,” says Bruce Pinker, DPM, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon with a private practice in New York. He recommends selecting socks made of moisture-wicking materials such as polyester, nylon, and wool, which are most effective at keeping sweaty feet dry, cool, and comfortable to reduce sweat and keep your feet dry.

Drs. Bruce Pinker and Adrienne Estes

Sweaty feet may not be life-threatening, but they can cause discomfort and hygiene problems, potentially leading to skin or nail infections, blisters, fungus, and bacterial issues, explains Adrienne M. Estes, DPM, Assistant Professor of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Western University of Health Sciences. While there's no cure for hyperhidrosis, managing symptoms by keeping your feet dry with sweat-preventing socks is essential.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
5 Ways AI is Different in Healthcare

While AI undoubtedly will help clinicians become more efficient and improve patient outcomes, the sector differs from other fields in these important ways.

5.  Shared benefits of cost reductions

Even in nations with for-profit payers, such as the U.S., healthcare is essentially a societal cost. In other industries, organizations often benefit from technologies that increase demand and allow them to charge more. But no one really benefits from cost increases in healthcare. While other industries will look for ways to use AI tools to increase their profit margins, automation in the healthcare sector will be aimed almost entirely at improvements in quality and efficiency.

As AI tools take center stage, organizations across industries will experiment with emerging solutions, refine the most promising use cases, and eventually settle into a new normal where AI is a part of their everyday operations. But this journey will look different from sector to sector, and it is important that healthcare leaders carefully consider their unique challenges and opportunities as they seek to create a better future for both patients and providers.

OBITUARIES
RE: The Passing of Vincent J Muscarella

Dr. Vincent J Muscarella passed away surrounded by the people who loved him most on February 1, 2024, after a short, but courageous battle with a rare type of lymphoma. He was only 70 years old. He worked as a podiatric surgeon in the Norristown area for most of his career until he had to retire suddenly in November due to his disease.

Dr. Vincent Muscarella

Vince was a 9th-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He was an avid golfer and spent as many sunny days on the golf course as he could. Vince had a great sense of humor and a smile that could light up a room. He will be missed by so many.

RESONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES]
RE: The Passing of Vincent J Muscarella, DPM

I first met Vince Muscarella in 1982. Fresh out of residency, he had returned to his beloved Norristown community to practice. He was PCPM/Metropolitan, and I was OCPM/Kern. We became quick friends and eventually business partners. We took the bare roots of a podiatry division at Suburban General Hospital and made it into an active department with a thriving residency training program. Having similar training, we scrubbed each other's cases and fit hand-in-glove with each other on even the most complex surgeries.

Vince was a brilliant, skilled, and intuitive surgeon. He was fearless - a force of nature both in his personal and professional lives. We both liked to teach and we both felt a strong need to advance our profession. He introduced me to the Surgery Department at PCPM where we both taught for many years. As with most strong personalities, Vince could be a polarizing figure. We eventually both went our separate ways. He continued with a strong career in both the academic world and private practice.

The last I saw and talked to Vince was at the Philadelphia golf show - his other passion. Oddly enough, it was yesterday at the annual golf show that I received the email from a mutual friend letting me know of his passing. There are many stories I could tell, but I will simply say that knowing Vince was an important part of my career as a podiatrist. He touched and influenced many people in our profession. He had great passion in everything that he accomplished in life. We are all better for knowing him and he will be missed.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 A
From: Ivar E. Roth DPM, MPH

I read Dr. Kravitz's thoughtful response, and I agree with him on several points. The first is that when one purchases or leases a piece of expensive diagnostic equipment, there is a great chance of over-utilization to justify its use and expense. The second is that new technologies should be looked at and incorporated into practices. In the case of the PSSD device, if Dr. Jacobs' 87% success with the standard test is correct, what patients would really want to pay $300 for a test with a free alternative that is that effective?

I see this new device as an excuse to bill patients for non-covered testing that is not necessary. It just gives doctors cover to charge and make money that is NOT in the patient’s best interest. Please ask yourselves if you would want to pay for a test when the free one is 87% effective.

This reminds me of unscrupulous podiatrists who take screening x-rays on all their new patients just to make sure nothing is missed. This includes patients who complain of ingrown nails, etc. While the insurance companies may pay inadvertently for an unjust x-ray CPT code, if the patient had to pay for these out-of-pocket, I think they would question why they needed an x-ray. I hope that some of our more recent graduates read my posts and understand that being ethical is first and foremost what we need to be as professionals and break the cycle of trying to make money at all costs.

Ivar E. Roth DPM, MPH, Newport Beach, CA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 B
From: Heather Kaufman, DPM

I am finding it difficult to hold my tongue any longer as I read the posts submitted by Ivar Roth. The hypocrisy and arrogance that drips from every word of his posts like slime down a wall is nauseating. He bombasts about ethical patient care in the same sentence in which he brags about billing $3K+ to a patient coming in for $125 nail care because he (as a "favor" to the patient) "pointed out" and "educated" that patient about all the things that were wrong with their foot.

He likely convinced them they needed thousands of dollars of additional products/services. Or, when he tries to argue that he is more qualified than a pain specialist to implant spinal cord stimulators for patients with pain not responding to pain medications. Yes, take the Abbott course Dr. Roth and implant such a device. I would love to be the expert witness for the plaintiff on that case!
