Scholl College’s Student Researchers Present their Findings at Midwinter Seminar
Three second year students, Rebecca Coyne, Rona Law, and Elizabeth Neubauer of the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science presented their research findings at the Midwinter Seminar hosted January 23-34 by the Illinois Podiatric Medical Students’ Association at The Drake Hotel in Chicago, IL.

(L-R) Rebecca Coyne, Rona Law, and Elizabeth Neubauer |
All three students completed an eight-week NIH-funded research fellowship program in the summer of 2014. Law’s work focused on the effects of surface types on gait parameters in diabetic peripheral neuropathy patients compared to healthy subjects. Coyne’s work focused on determining whether an association exists between foot types and Jones fractures using multivariate analysis. Neubauer completed a study that assessed whether postural stability and time taken to heel-off during gait are associated with equinus-induced pain.

CO Podiatrist Discusses Bunions
Bunions develop when the big toe pushes against the second toe. They’re bony bumps at the base of the big toe. The problem can be worsened by ill-fitting shoes but largely is the result of heredity. “Your foot type is something you inherit from mom and dad,” said podiatrist Dr. Mark Maurer. “A certain type of foot will make you prone to bunions.”

Dr. Mark Maurer |
“I like to get patients into a custom orthotic after (surgery) to maintain the correction. Just like when you’ve had braces and you get a retainer,” said Maurer. Of course, the difficulty of surgery and rehab will go for naught if a patient isn’t willing to provide a better home for their feet afterward. “If they’re in pain and ready for surgery, but they’re not willing to change shoes, I really hesitate on that,” Maurer said.

MA Podiatrist Joins NEW Health Full-Time
In response to overwhelming demand, podiatrist Eric Schultz, DPM, will practice at North End Waterfront Health (NEW) full-time beginning on February 24. Schultz, who has chaired NEW Health’s Podiatry Department since 1997, had previously split his time between the North End and another health center. “I love this neighborhood and the patients I see here, so I’m excited to be able to offer even more appointments to returning and new patients,” Schultz says. “Winter is a common time for foot problems to surface, so don’t wait for summer to address any concerns.” Podiatrist Paul Pantano, DPM, also cares for foot patients at NEW Health.

20/20 Imaging Announces FDA Approval of Digital X-Ray System
20/20 Imaging, a leader in small market imaging, with nearly 4,500 installations across the country, announced the FDA approval of its HF PXS-710 digital x-ray system. Targeted more specifically to the podiatry market, this higher-frequency system offers the potential for lower dose with advanced imaging capabilities that enable lower radiation while producing high image quality and detail. The system is also the first anatomically-programmed digital x-ray system for podiatry, providing proper x-ray technique at the push of a button.
"Like any medical specialist, podiatrists have unique needs and exams specific to their practice, and so we are glad to bring a completely interfaced digital x-ray system to the podiatry market that is designed specifically for their needs," stated Bob Salzman, president of 20/20 Imaging.

Complications From Surgery Cause Most Hospital Re-Admissions
A surgical site infection (SSI) is the most likely reason a patient will land back in the hospital following surgery, followed by obstruction and bleeding, a new study on post-discharge complications in JAMA finds.
In the study, which looked at 2012 re-admission statistics from nearly 350 hospitals nationwide, researchers found that unplanned re-admission within the first 30 days of surgery is most commonly caused by problems that patients encountered after they left the hospital. The study found about 5.7% of re-admissions were caused by new complications linked to surgery, while only 2.3% of patients were re-admitted because of problems they had experienced while in the hospital.

House Again Votes to Repeal Health Care Law
The House passed a bill on Tuesday to repeal the Affordable Care Act for the first time in the new Congress, but Democrats appeared to show more zeal in defending the law than Republicans did in trying to get rid of it. The measure goes now to the Senate, where the majority leader, Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky, has said that the chamber will vote on legislation repealing the health law but has not announced a schedule.
Republicans in both chambers are divided over how to replace the law and how to respond if the Supreme Court upholds a challenge to insurance subsidies now being provided to millions of people under the law. The House vote, 239 to 186, generally followed party lines. No Democrats voted for repeal. Three Republicans — Representatives Robert Dold of Illinois, John Katko of upstate New York, and Bruce Poliquin of Maine — voted against the bill.

Query: Chronic Plantar Pruritis
A 38 year old black male, healthy, active duty military presented with itching plantar feet of 2 years' duration. There is no history of trauma. The onset was a burning sensation, but without increased temperature, sweating, or odor. There is no break in the skin, and he has normal skin lines. Topicals and Benadryl have provided no relief. I will try gabapentin, 300mg bid. There are a few dark pigmented patches 1cm in diameter in the arch and forefoot. There are no signs of tinea pedis or bacterial infection, and cultures have been negative. His hands do not itch. All labs are normal, and no biopsy has been done. Suggestions?

From: Richard A. Stanley, DPM
Our practice went live with Athena in September. As with any EMR, the initial setup is daunting. However, you are assigned an implementation guide with weekly live conference calls to work out any difficulties for three months prior to your go live date. The customer support is the best I have ever worked with.
