PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1 |
NC Podiatrist Lectures at Davidson College’s Annual Health Professions Symposium
Davidson College’s 10th Annual Health Professions Symposium was held in Davidson, North Carolina. Approximately 90 students attended the event. This is the third year podiatry has been highlighted with a “Discover Podiatry Lecture” and hands-on suture workshop made possible by Gretchen Lawrence, DPM’s partnership with the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine, a few of the 11 podiatric medical schools, and some diagnostic company donations. The event was well received.
|
Dr. Gretchen Lawrence |
Also attending were other allied health professionals as well as medical, osteopathic, dental, and veterinary schools. Davidson College alumni who are now practicing various forms of medicine also attended the event in hopes of encouraging tomorrow's generation to enter the health professions. Dr. Lawrence, a podiatrist from Foothills Podiatry in Shelby, NC was on hand to encourage these students to “put their best foot forward in all they aspire to do!” And consider podiatry as an option.

Feet ‘N Beyond of New Jersey, specializing in aesthetic and minimally invasive foot surgery, has announced the launch of its new campaign, “Step Into Confidence.” This campaign is designed to empower everyone to prioritize their foot health and embrace a pain-free, confident future.
|
Drs. Helene Nguyen and Yong Zhu |
“Our feet are the foundations of our mobility and confidence, yet so many people live with foot pain or avoid addressing concerns because they think it’s just something they have to tolerate,” said Helene Nguyen, DPM, podiatric surgeon and founder of Feet ‘N Beyond. “This campaign is about changing that narrative and providing advanced solutions that combine functionality with aesthetics.” Yong Zhu, DPM, co-founder of Feet ‘N Beyond, added, “We recognize that foot health impacts every aspect of life, from physical activity to emotional well-being.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
10 Small Ways to Provide Great Customer Service to Patients
Providing great customer service to patients will make them feel like you are all on the same team, they will be more apt to send referrals, and they will be more willing to make sure you are paid for the time and effort you have spent on their care. Here are 10 ways to provide excellent service to your patients outside of the exam room:
9. Be a little obsessed with your patients.
Would you have a practice without them? You should know who your patients are, why they come and see you, and you should be sure they receive the best experience and follow-up possible. Have your front-office staff make an effort to remember names of your frequent patients; that goes a long way in making a patient feel welcome.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) -PART 1 |
From: Lawrence Rubin, DPM
I believe Dr. Jacobson may have presciently forecast the future of podiatry. I was one of the 27 other students who graduated on May, 1958, from the Illinois College of Chiropody and Foot Surgery. We received the Doctor of Surgical Chiropody (DSC) degree. However, in the mid-1960s, we had to return our diplomas, because the college name had changed to the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine. I had studied hard and graduated the valedictorian. Standing next to me and Dr. Scholl was one of the most well-known foot surgeons in the country, Henri L. DuVries, DSC, MD. He had gone on from chiropody college to become an MD general surgeon specializing in foot surgery.
Dr. DuVries gave a brief talk congratulating my class in which he lauded the profession of chiropody for “doing all the minor but extremely important things like expertly cutting corns, calluses and thick toenails, on diabetics – that other doctors do not know how to do and do not want to do.” I remember this as if it were yesterday, and also remember the warning Dr. DuVries gave our class, “Although minor toenail surgery should always be provided by chiropodists when necessary, were chiropodists to abandon giving this service to the public and just wanted to performs surgery along with MDs, that will be the day it loses its main value to the public.” And, as might be expected, every graduate cringed at hearing this.
Like it or not, chiropody had a firm place in yesterday’s foot healthcare marketplace. Sadly, that no longer exists. We really should be finding and actuating solutions for this problem. They are out there. We just need the leaders to lead.
Lawrence Rubin, DPM, Las Vegas, NV

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2A |
From: Steven Block, DPM
I agree that many in our profession refuse to refer to themselves as podiatrists. However, between 2000-2020, foot and ankle surgery reimbursement declined 49%. Since 2017, the consumer price index (CPI) increased 24%. Have reimbursement rates kept pace? Not even close. I performed a Lapidus/Akin on a 22 year-old female a few weeks ago and was paid $492. The same week, I needed an LED strip light replaced in my office. The electrician took 30 minutes and charged me $400.
Line workers at a local factory have a starting salary of $115,000. In 2023, the five largest insurance companies in the U.S. made over $465 billion. Year after year, they post record profits. The system is broken. Podiatry, and medicine in general, will continue to be devalued until we take a collective stand. The provider has become a pawn for the corporate monster. Aside from the effort, commitment, stress, liability, if DPM were listed on the NYSE, is there anyone foolish enough to invest $250,000?
Steven Block, DPM, Owensboro, KY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2B |
From: Chuck Langman, DPM
My take as someone who is closer to retirement than just starting out is a little nuanced as we can only see life through our own eyes. I did a one-year surgical residency in the 1980s. I came out being comfortable and proficient with forefoot surgery. As I did more surgery, I realized I wasn’t in love with it (and you need to be in love with it to be great at it). I kept only to the procedures I was comfortable with and never ventured out of my comfort zone. I enjoyed far more the people I was able to keep out of the OR and the athletes I treated conservatively. Fast forward to when I was about 50 years old and was lucky enough to join a very large orthopedic group that allowed me to be non-surgical and do orthopedics and sports medicine all day.
I truly love what I do! I have a team of surgical podiatrists and fellowship-trained foot and ankle surgeons to refer to for the cases that need surgery. I also note that we have a large team of...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2C |
From: Alan Sherman, DPM
I have a few more thoughts on the future of podiatric residency education. As far as the dual track for residency education....It wasn't a popular option 2 years ago when I proposed it, but timing is important and maybe its time will come soon. I just hate inefficiency and waste, and I feel so much time and effort is being wasted on training residents in surgery that most will not likely use. Their cases should go to the few residents that are suited to become specialty orthopedic surgeons of the foot and ankle. I also hate pretense, but love transparency and honesty because it leads to trust and comfort. We want to be trusted as a profession.
We are podiatrists and that brand has gotten better through the years. That we aren't using the brand name is, I think, just dumb and a lost opportunity. The public is beginning to understand the name podiatry and what it means. I've always felt that patients may get a second opinion from persons who calls themselves foot and ankle surgeons, but surgery is seldom why they go to any doctor to begin with. They don't see a sign that says foot and ankle surgeon and think, I want some of that. They go to a podiatrist to obtain relief from their symptoms, to feel and perform better, and surgery isn't any more their first choice than it should be the doctor's.
Alan Sherman, DPM, Boca Raton, FL
