FASMA Expands in Northern Virginia
Foot and Ankle Specialists of the Mid-Atlantic (FASMA) expands with the addition of its most recent division, Reston Podiatry Associates, based in Northern Virginia, adding 3 locations in Manassas, Reston, and Leesburg, VA. PA Podiatrist Provides Needed Care During Pandemic
Ashley Faupel, the property manager since 2015 of Graystone in Bedford, has had to get creative and change up the way she has dealt with daily routines since March of 2020, she said. Her tenants are aged 55 and older, with some residents as old as 96. Brandon Wilt, DPM, a podiatrist from Bedford, said he makes regular trips to Graystone to treat his patients on-site, as well as seeing several other Graystone residents in his office.

Dr. Wilt is familiar with many of the residents who experience reduced mobility, and is aware that Faupel assists all the tenants in a myriad of ways. Chuck Pinardi is a patient of Dr. Wilt’s and sees him on-site for his foot care. “He comes directly to my apartment,” he said.

8 Tips for Avoiding Employee Handbook Crises
Many medical practices have an employee handbook, or employee policy handout, but fail to update them on a regular basis. There have been a large number of changes to employment law over the past couple of years. Here are some items you should be sure to include:
2. Disciplinary action - Do you have a policy about your process and how you will track absences? Review this policy carefully. Less is nearly always better than extensive. Do you have so much detail in the policy, that in practice you never comply with all of the rules? That could cause a problem if an employee wants to fight a termination and takes your handbook to an attorney. You should always have a statement that your disciplinary process, while liberal in nature, could result in immediate termination, depending on the seriousness of the infraction.

I have been a user of an EHR and have been paperless for many years. I have also been the “outlier” as I have only used one EHR my entire career, until recently. I had used TRAKnet through NEMO Health but with NEMO being acquired by Modernizing Medicine last year, I needed to know if I was going to stay with TRAKnet, move to Modernizing Medicine’s podiatry platform, or switch to another EHR. I did my due diligence and ultimately decided to move forward with changing to Modernizing Medicine and their podiatry-specific platform.
I wanted a platform/EHR that was podiatry-specific, easy to use but more importantly, was intuitive and learned how I practiced. I have just finished the onboarding process and went live this week and am happy with my transition. The company, especially the training and support, has been truly world-class. In the January 24 issue of PM News, Dr. Spier took offense to a comment made by Dr. Roth concerning billing an E&M code in addition to a separate service Dr. Hodgson provided to her patient. It caught me by surprise that a fellow podiatrist would belittle another colleague for having a cash practice. I would love for PM News to poll the number of podiatrists who would love to have a successful cash practice, freeing themselves from the hoops we podiatrists must jump through to get a claim paid.
In my opinion, a true measure of a successful practice is providing a quality service to patients that they are willing to pay for out of pocket. I commend Dr. Roth for the successful cash practice he has achieved. I am sure it took a great amount of hard work and dedication.
I do not accept HMO and certain other plans in my practice. I do see a fair amount of these patients in my practice who pay cash equal to the fees I bill insurance companies. I find it very gratifying that I am providing a high enough quality service to those patients who are willing to pay out-of-pocket, especially when they can see a provider in their plan for a lot less.
