PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
WI Podiatrist Comments on Gaming Shoes

From computer specs down to the peripherals used, top gamers want to be the best by using the best. Now, companies like K-Swiss and Puma are looking to help gamers in an area overlooked before: footwear. The marketing language used for both shoes aims to help gamers reach their maximum performance. But could a shoe actually improve your performance in a game?

Dr. Maggie Fournier

Maggie Fournier, DPM, a podiatrist with Gundersen Health System in Wisconsin, says the shoes won’t improve your performance. But it may help you play at your best. A key component to any equipment, including shoes, comes down to the comfort. That alone can bring out your best effort. “You need to be comfortable in them and some stylish shoes might not be comfortable yet they look good,” Dr. Fournier said. “If you walk around and you’re not comfortable, you’re starting to have pain, then maybe the shoe is the first thing to look at.”

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Study Examines the Use of Topical Antibiotics After Biopsies and Excisions

In this study, the authors used data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey to analyze the rate of topical antibiotic prescriptions given to patients after undergoing clean skin biopsy or excision among dermatologists and non-dermatologists between 2006 and 2015. In a representative 2-year period (2014–2015), topical antibiotics were prescribed by dermatologists at 10.2% of biopsy visits and 5.7% of excision visits and by non-dermatologists at 1.9% of biopsy visits and 5.3% of excision visits. Among dermatologists, there was an initial trend away from topical antibiotics with a nadir between 2010 and 2011 (OR, 0.20), with subsequent rise in use.

Despite high-quality evidence from randomized controlled trials suggesting advantages of using petrolatum, both dermatologists and non-dermatologists continue to prescribe topical antibiotics after clean procedures. Further studies are warranted to explore the factors behind this prescribing pattern and how to optimize topical antibiotic use.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Five Marketing Tips for the First Quarter - Part 1

Here are five easy, inexpensive ways to take advantage of less-busy days to grow your practice.

1. Confirm you’re not turning patients away.

One of the simplest ways to improve your marketing is to be sure all physicians in your practice are listed properly in the directories of your contracted health plans. When a plan directory lists one of your physicians under the wrong specialty or at the wrong address, or if it doesn’t state the physician is accepting new patients, the directory is systematically turning away your prospective patients. Mark your calendar to check your health plan directories at least once a year, and ideally more than once.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM,

I agree with the absurdity referenced in the post by Dr. Gertsik. This is a prime example of the divisiveness within our profession. My solution for Dr. Gertsik is to get boarded by the American Board of Medical Specialties in Podiatry.

Two years of residency would allow you to sit for their board, and 20 years of clinical practice would equate to two years of residency. From your post, it sounds like you would qualify based on your training or years in practice.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Kevin A. Kirby, DPM

The “Pose Method” and “Chi Running” are styles of running popularized over the past decade where coaches teach runners to try to land more on their forefoot, and not on their heels, during running. These two running “methods” were created by individuals who have sold books, produced videos, and have trained coaches to teach runners on “the proper way to run”. Neither of these running methods, which have likely made their creators lots of money, have been shown to be more “natural”, more metabolically efficient, or less injury-producing than other running styles.

Pose and Chi running became popular during the barefoot running fad of 2009 to 2015, where many self-proclaimed “running form experts” on the Internet asserted, without supporting scientific research evidence, that...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3A
From: Alan Sherman, DPM

I want to respond to Stephen Kominsky’s message critical of the APMA’s and podiatrists’ efforts to educate the lay public about what we are and what we do. Throughout my 42 years as a podiatrist, I’ve seen so many efforts by the APMA and state associations to educate the public. I don’t believe that it has done no good at all, and I don’t thing Dr. Kominsky is saying that. I’m sure it has helped. But we must acknowledge that what we tell the public about ourselves is not going to have the credibility of what they observe on their own, or are told by trusted sources.

In this age of ubiquitous media, we have all developed sophisticated filters and have learned to challenge many sources of information that 100 years ago would have been...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3B
From: Estelle Albright, DPM

Not only patients, but our colleagues in medicine are unaware of the scope of podiatry, both surgical and conservative. Further, they are unaware of the extent of our training. Point in case: I gave a noon-time medical lecture to staff at our CME series at my hospital. I opened the lecture with my credentials and spoke about the scope of podiatry.

After the lecture and Q&A session, a staff cardiologist approached and said he had no idea of our training, thinking that podiatrists simply went to, 'trade school'. I was happy to have imparted the information about our profession, but was made acutely aware that many other medical professionals have no idea of what we do and how we are trained.
