PODIATRISTS AND THE SUPERBOWL |
Expecting NY Podiatrist To Watch Husband Play in Superbowl from Home
New England Patriots wide receiver Chris Hogan tortured the Steelers with nine catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns in the AFC championship game. Every player at the Super Bowl has a unique story but Hogan’s is better than most. Hogan had scholarship offers for football from Connecticut and Rutgers but picked Penn State for lacrosse. “It was the sport I was recruited more heavily for. I visited Penn State and fell in love with the place.” Hogan fell in love with something much important at Penn State. Dr. Ashley Boccio was an All-American defender on Penn State’s women’s lacrosse team. They started dating and became engaged. They are due to have twins in March, a boy and a girl.

Boccio, a podiatry resident at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, didn’t make the trip to Houston because of her condition and will watch the Super Bowl at their home in Long Island. For Hogan this season, there has been a lot of long-distance commuting. He said he makes the three-hour drive each way from Foxborough once a week, “mostly to just have lunch with her at the hospital.”

PUBLISHED PODIATRISTS |
IL Podiatrist Published Paper in JPRS
Edgardo R. Rodríguez-Collazo, DPM recently published a paper in the Journal of Plastic & Reconstruction Surgery (JPRS) titled, "A Retrospective Look at Integrating a Novel Regenerative Medicine Approach in Plastic Limb Reconstruction." The paper studied full-thickness wounds recommended previously for amputation. The treatment was a combinatorial approach of muscle flap reconstruction (medial hemisoleus, lateral hemisoleus, or peroneus brevis muscle flaps), concentrated bone marrow aspirate, platelet-rich plasma, INTEGRA Wound matrix, vacuum-assisted closure, and split-thickness skin grafts. All defects were successfully healed.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
10 Tips for Dealing with Problem Patients - Part 10
Here are 10 tips on dealing with problem patients at your practice.
10. "A measure of compassion can be helpful. These are not patients, in general, who are totally healthy emotionally or otherwise. They may have learned mal-adaptive ways of interacting." - Jennifer Frank, family physician in private practice in northeastern Wisconsin.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1 |
RE: The Passing of Ronald Vanderheyden, DPM
I am very sad to report that my best friend, Ronald Vanderheyden, DPM, died of natural causes on January 25, 2017, while visiting his family in Michigan. Ron had moved to the San Diego, CA area about 1990 to practice in North County. He was an active member of the San Diego County Podiatric Medical Society, and served every possible leadership position. Ron was a gentle, mellow man with a very strong religious commitment, and never uttered a bad word or demonstrated a negative thought. He was an avid golfer and we enjoyed a game together almost every week or two for years. He was kind, thoughtful, and was admired by all who were lucky enough to know him. He will be sorely missed.
Martin R. Taubman, DPM, MBA, San Diego, CA

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Bunionectomy with Exostectomy Hallux Base
I performed a modified McBride-type bunionectomy with sesamoid release, etc. and clean-up of an arthritic hallux phalangeal base due to degenerative changes. I am being denied the CPT 28124 hallux exostectomy because the two procedures were done through the same incision – which is true. However, I was under the impression that since the surgery was done on two separate bones and billed as two separate sites (foot for CPT 28292 and 1st toe for CPT 28124) that both should be payable. Am I wrong in my thinking?
Pete Smith, DPM Lancaster, PA
Response: If I understand your description of the surgery, you remodeled the base of the proximal phalanx of the hallux. If this is true, you should not expect any additional reimbursement beyond the bunion repair. The arthoplasty of the first metatarsal head for bunion repair includes both sides of the joint.
If there were very unusual findings and complex repair (i.e., cyst in bone requiring curettage and bone packing requiring significantly more work than the bunionectomy value), then you would be entitled to additional payment with the addition of a “-22” modifier.
Howard Zlotoff, DPM, Camp Hill, PA
