Extremely Large Feet Probably Genetic: VA Podiatrist

It's hard not to notice the bright orange shoes worn by the Wilson High School girls basketball team. Janeen Camp sports size 20s, while her twin sister Janae wears 15s. And those are in men's sizes. The Camps aren't finished growing. Doctors have told Johanna there's no telling how big her daughters' feet could get. "It most probably is genetics," said Dr. Jeffrey Feld of Podiatry Associates of Virginia.

Dr. Jeffrey Feld

Feld has not treated the Camps, but has dealt with young athletes since 1999. "I've seen some real doozies over the years. But as a foot and ankle surgeon, I'd say that this is a very unique situation."

AT THE COLLEGES

NYCPM Clubs Frolick at Fun-Filled Fundraising Nights

As all students at NYCPM were busy managing their course loads, many of them were also hard at work planning ways to fundraise for their club or organization. September to January were filled with events with the ultimate goal of raising money. On September 21st, the International Podiatric Club (IPC) held a welcome event for all new incoming students to NYCPM. This event was hosted on the beautiful rooftop at Hudson Terrace where over 120 students attended.

NYCPM Students at Halloween Party

On October 5th, the Asian American Podiatric Student Association (AAPSA) held a karaoke fundraising night at 5 Bar Karaoke Lounge. IPC returned to their fundraising for their annual mission trip with a Halloween party hosted at Mad River on October 26th. They had a turnout of around 40 excited students all dressed up in costume. The APMSA held an event at The Delancey on December 13th to celebrate the completion of first semester for the Class of 2016. Lastly, to welcome in the New Year as well the new January Class of 2017, students attended an event hosted by IPC at Copia on January 4th, 2013.

CHANGING HOSPITAL POLICY

CA Podiatrist's Push Changes Hospital's Post C-Section Policy

When Dr. Heather McGuire gave birth to her daughter via cesarean section at Ventura’s Community Memorial Hospital in 2011, she didn’t get to hold the infant until two hours later. That felt like an eon to the Ventura podiatrist, and she doesn’t want it to happen again — to herself or any other new moms — if medically possible, she said.

Dr. Heather McGuire (Photo: Karen Quincy Loberg)

McGuire, who is now pregnant with her second child and scheduled to have another C-section in March, has been working with hospital officials to allow for “gentle cesareans,” or those in which the mother and baby aren’t immediately separated after birth except in cases of medical emergency. Hospital officials decided last month to amend protocols so that within the next 30 days, most routine C-sections will be “gentle” when medically safe for both the mother and baby.

OH Podiatrist Receives Distinguished Alumni Award

Cardinal Mooney High School Alumni Association named Dr. William S. Diorio, who graduated in 1960, its 2013  Distinguished Alumni Award recipient at a prayer service last week. Dr. Diorio has been involved with Cardinal Mooney High School for 57 years, first as a student, then as an alumnus, a parent, and finally as a grandparent.

Dr. Diorio graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1968 and has been in private practice in Poland, Ohio for 44 years. E-HEALTH NEWS

FTC Stands by Informed Consent and Privacy Guidelines

The Federal Trade Commission on Friday re-affirmed its previous support for informed consent as a cornerstone to privacy protection in the Wild West of mobile information technology. Its 36-page report, Mobile Privacy Disclosures, Building Trust Through Transparency, addresses not just mobile application developers, but mobile app platforms as well. While not focused on mobile healthcare applications, the report touches frequently on privacy issues affecting healthcare as well as other mobile application uses.

There has been a specific regulatory role for the FTC in healthcare-related technologies since passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which gave it enforcement powers over technology companies such as independent personal health records systems providers not covered under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and enforced by HHS. The FTC also has regulatory enforcement authority as a consumer watchdog over mobile health devices.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)

Query: Charges for Paperwork?

I was curious as to what, if any, other podiatrists are charging for filling out paperwork (FMLA, disability, etc.). We charge $20 per form, but I usually don't charge for my surgical patients. I feel like I need to increase the fees, so I wondered what the going rate might be?

Also, I have a few patients who insist that I fill out their disability paperwork, yet I don't feel they are disabled. Am I legally obligated to fill out the paperwork? Can I refuse to fill out the paperwork?

Joe Gonzalez, DPM, East Lansing, MI

Editor's note: PM News Does not provide legal advice. While you might be legally obligated to fill out some paperwork, falsely stating that a patient is disabled subjects you to legal consequences, including criminal prosecution and professional discipline.

RE: Diabetic Therapeutic Shoe Bill (David S. Chung, DPM)
From: Dale Feinberg, DPM

I've dispensed  a lot of diabetic  shoes over the past ten years. I can never get paid without a prepayment audit. After complying with all the required paperwork, I still get denied payment. We used to try to get the required MD certification over a fax, but now have the patients obtain this information themselves. The patients who are successful usually report that it takes 3-4 visits to get their family doctor to comply with written notes that conform to Medicare requirements. DME products, like retirement, are a thing of the past. My recommendation to young podiatrist is don't waste your time.

RE: You Should Be Getting Facebook Referrals
From: Nicole G. Freels, DPM

Are you getting Facebook referrals? We are. Here’s why. Our FB business page is full of engaging, highly sharable content that is relevant and not over-the-heads of our patients. The company we use to post for us, posts pop-culture type content with a podiatry slant 80% of the time and Lexington podiatry-specific blog links, VIP offers, or services the rest of the time.

We are enjoying a significant increase in ‘Likes’ and influx of referrals that come in happy to tell us that they saw our post on a ‘friend of a friend’s’ Facebook newsfeed. As an example of how this works, we recently posted a blog post called “Lincoln, Daniel Day Lewis and Flat Feet” that brought in a patient who identified with flat feet and was engaged by the catchy headline. He said that he could identify with our office – the style of writing has much to do with that.

In this age of TMZ/People Magazine culture, your patients don’t just want to hear about foot conditions, they are scanning Facebook for stories that are entertaining and informational. Why not fill that niche with entertaining podiatry-related posts? It works for us!

RE: Changing Office Hours (Olga Luepschen, DPM)
From: Brian Kashan, DPM

I have read multiple posts from both sides of the story regarding changing office hours for Fridays, and still am not convinced by any of them. There are some issues that haven’t been touched on.

For example, in any practice, patient access to care must be addressed. So, there needs to be hours either in the evening, a Saturday, and during the daytime. Do you need all of this? No,
of course not. But if you don’t have this access, mostly for working people, you will lose these patients. I find it somewhat interesting that...

RE: Physicians Also Get in Trouble
From: Philip Obiedzinski, DPM

I would like to alert the readership to the weekly report of Outpatient Surgery Magazine (outpatientsurgery.net). It contains a lot of useful info. They never hesitate to report all of medicine's flaws. The podiatrists who do not like to see negative stories about podiatrists can see that many physicians also get in trouble with the law.
