Foot pain is on the rise with more people working from home. One of the main reasons behind this trend is that a lot of people don't think to wear shoes inside the house. So, what should you be wearing on your feet at home to prevent foot pain?

According to Joy Rowland, DPM of the Cleveland Clinic, "Shoes to wear inside the home when you're working would be a great athletic shoe that has a great arch support or a deep heel counter, so your foot doesn't roll inside the shoe when you're walking. It helps with what we call pronation so that your foot doesn't fall to the inside when you walk. Secondly, wearing a slipper that has a great arch support is also a great option."

Focus on Six Key Areas for Successful Physician Partnerships
Physician partnerships require much pre-planning, careful structuring, and a whole lot of continued communication in order for them to be successful. Here are the six areas I recommend examining in great detail when undertaking the process of beginning and nurturing physician partnerships.
3. Potential partner. The physician being considered for partnership needs to have a stake in this interest as well. Oftentimes, I see a practice that greatly values what a physician brings but fails to consider what this same physician may want out of a partnership. What does he want out of the partnership arrangement (financially, operationally, and strategically)? Keep in mind also that it is perfectly reasonable for a physician to ask how much he will be paid in the first year and in subsequent years.

Query: Professional Discounts from Shoe Companies
I would love to know from other podiatrists what shoe companies still offer professional discounts to our families and staff. From past experiences, Brooks, ASICS, Ecco, New Balance and a few more have been good to our profession. I know from a recent experience that New Balance has cut off podiatry from discounts. New Balance has an excellent product line but for them not to offer discounts to a profession that refers so much business to them is wrong. My main go to a shoe company is Brooks. They offer an excellent product line and although they have terminated (temporarily they say) a professional purchase program for podiatrists, discounts can be gotten on a case-by-case basis.
Please respond to this query if you know of shoe companies showing their gratitude to our profession by offering discount programs.

RE: UHC Overpayment and Appeal Letters Going Paperless

Continuing their move to reduce costs, UHC announced today that all overpayment and appeal letters for UHC Community plans will be going paperless as of May 5, 2023 in selected markets. This announcement, while not unexpected, is actually not all bad. This actually will improve efficiency and the carrier will no longer be able to justify that they never received your appeals. Providers' ability to track receipt of appeals and decisions through the provider portal will ensure receipt and tracking through the system.
It's just a matter of time before digital communication with UHC will be mandatory for all plans and markets. This same process is already available with most Medicare carriers and will continue to penetrate the healthcare landscape. This is just another nail in the coffin for paper processing. It underscores the trend to digitize every healthcare transaction. Check your February 1, 2023 UHC announcement for more information.

ALLOWED To lecture? I didn’t know that anyone (including podiatrists) had the authority to generally allow or disallow someone to lecture. I always thought that whoever was organizing a lecture series was responsible for getting the lecturers. I hate the idea of lecture police! Let the individual sponsor decide and keep our nose out of it. If there is a problem, then people will not attend and the issue takes care of itself—if you consider it an issue.
