TX Podiatrist Runs in Democratic Congressional Primary
The last day to register to vote in the March 1 primary election is Monday, February 1st. In statewide elections, Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Will Hurd has a challenger, William “Hart” Peterson, Republican. A recent Marfa transplant, Peterson decided the day of the filing deadline to submit his name in the ring.
|
|
Dr. Lee Keenen |
Former incumbent Pete Gallego from Alpine is running on the Democratic ticket against Dr. Lee Keenen, a podiatrist from Del Rio. Keenen talks at length about the pernicious effect of money in politics generally and in this race specifically. The self-described conservative Democrat is an ardent proponent of campaign finance reform, even in the form of a constitutional amendment. He pledges to spend up to $40,000 of his own money, not the money of others, in this race. Winners from both races will face each other in November.

IA Podiatrist Unsure on Whom to Vote for in Iowa Caucuses
At his final campaign rally before Monday’s first-in-the nation caucuses here, Marco Rubio pushed his hardest message of the day – arguing that he’s the party’s only candidate who can win the White House. Whether Mr. Rubio can do that depends on how many people like Dr. Dave Schroeder pick him at their caucuses Monday.
|
|
Dr. David Schroeder |
Dr. Schroeder, a Davenport podiatrist, came to see Mr. Rubio Sunday, torn among him, Mr. Cruz, and Mr. Trump. He said he likes Mr. Trump’s promises to shake up the Washington political establishment, but isn’t sure if he can bring himself to write “Trump” on his ballot. “When you sit down to pull the lever, there’s a second thought about how there’s just so much unknown about what he’ll do,” he said.

RE: The Passing of David Kibrit, DPM
From: Richard M. Cowin, DPM, JD
I had the pleasure of meeting David Kibrit in the early 1970s when we were both students at University of Illinois. In addition to being highly intelligent, he always walked around with a smile on his face, and he had a very nice way with people. I remember that he used to work in his mother’s taco restaurant (he was also fluent in Spanish) which I used to frequent. He was very much loved, even then, by the restaurant’s patrons. When I applied to and was accepted to the ICPM Class of 1980, he became interested in podiatry. I was glad to see him apply and graduate, and go on to become a wonderful podiatrist and professor. My deepest condolences to his friends and family. May he rest in peace.

| CODINGLINE CORNER | |
Query: I&D of Abscess
What would be the appropriate ICD-10 code corresponding with an incision and drainage of abscess of foot/toe? We have been using L03.031 (cellulitis of right toe) and L03.032 (cellulitis of left toe), but want to make sure this is the best code to fit the procedure CPT 10060, or CPT 10061.
Gary Unsdorfer, DPM, Medina, OH
Response: In ICD-9, abscess and cellulitis fell under the same code. This is no longer the case with ICD-10. You listed the cellulitis codes here. I suggest considering these options for I&D of abscess:
L02.611 (cutaneous abscess of right foot)
L02.612 (cutaneous abscess of left foot)
There are no different codes for an abscess of the toe versus other part of the foot, so these are appropriate for either. If there is also cellulitis associated with the abscess, the cellulitis codes may be added as well for a secondary diagnosis.

From: Dennis Shavelson, DPM
A set formula for shoe manufacturers that are mass producing shoes is probably not feasible due to the differences in the forefoot break for cohorts of n=10,000+ feet or more. The failure rate would be too high. In order to develop cohorts that approximate the margin of error for designing soles or insoles that flex at the MP joints would need to be profiled and sub-grouped utilizing a foot typing system such as functional foot typing. That would lead to developing three or more variants of the insole or sole manufactured for the common foot types that would then be dispensed after the consumer is foot-typed at the time of sale.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1A | |
From: Jeff Kittay, DPM
I don't know which podiatry school and residency program Dr. Hultman attended. I admit that it has been a long time since I attended NYCPM, and I may not be up on every single aspect of current training, but to claim that DPMs work "at the same level of responsibility" or have equivalent experience is simply untrue. How many babies did he deliver? How many psychiatric patients did he evaluate/treat? Neurosurgeries attended/performed? General oncology rounds attended? Pneumothoraxes drained? Appendices removed? MIs diagnosed and treated?
Let's get real. Until the curricula are the same, the experiences in residencies are the same, and the DEGREES are the same, parity is a pretension. We don't do what they do, but they can do what we do because their degrees say they can. Podiatric medicine is limited licensure in all 50 states and will remain so until it is augmented with or replaced by MD/DO.
This no longer impacts me personally as I have left practice, but to unfairly burden future generations with a DPM degree that will increasingly become worth less (not worthless) as far as insurance companies are concerned, is more than unfair; it is selling them the short end of the stick.
Jeff Kittay, DPM (retired), San Isidro, Costa Rica

From: Harris Klear, DPM
I feel everyone is missing the point. The problem is not that you are not an MD; it is parity. Insurance companies can do anything they want. If podiatrists are not paid the equivalent of a foot and ankle orthopedist, what is the importance of changing the degree? If podiatrists get an MD/DPM degree, the insurance companies will find a way to pay you less.
Harris Klear, DPM, Delran, NJ
Editor's comment: Fortunately, insurance companies cannot do "anything" they want. That's why we have courts. Presently, a DPM degree is not equal to an MD degree. Only a degree change or an MD addition can achieve universal legal parity.
