Podiatry Becoming More Recognized in Thailand

Those who suffer from plantar fasciitis are desperate to recover but the process is not easy. Pain medication is only a temporary measure and the problem will recur if it isn't fixed. "If your arm is broken, you wear a cast and stop using it. You can't really do the same when you have a pain in your foot. It's just not possible to stop using the feet," says podiatrist Dr, Cherdpong Hansasuta.

Dr. Cherdpong Hansasuta

Although in the last five years podiatry has become more recognized as a discipline, Thailand still has only a few podiatrists. Cherdpong is now working seven days a week at three hospitals: Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej Hospital, and BNH Hospital.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY - PART 1

IN Podiatrist Who Lost Daughter to Drugs Speaks to Parents

Retired Valparaiso podiatrist Dr. Mann Spitler shared a message of empowerment with the parents who attended his workshop on drug prevention this week. “Prevention research has shown that parents have real power with their children,” Spitler told about 20 parents and others at the Family & Youth Services Bureau.

Dr. Mann Spitler

Spitler, whose 20-year-old daughter, Manda, died after using heroin in 2002, presented Undoing Drugs: What Parents Need To Know as part of the bureau's family life workshop series. One of the keys to protecting children from drug experimentation and subsequent addiction is to discuss with them why using drugs and alcohol are not acceptable, Spitler said.

Busy Schedule Causes OH Podiatrist to Resign from Children's Services Board

The Lorain County Children Services vice chair, Dr. David Hintz, announced his resignation Jan. 22 after scheduling conflicts prevented him from attending meetings. Hintz, who works as a podiatrist, has missed 24 meetings since April 2010. He said it is hard to make 4 p.m. meetings monthly.

Dr. David Hintz

“It is with deep regret that I must resign from the board effective immediately. It is apparent that my schedule will not allow me the latitude I had when I was first on the board,” Hintz wrote. “This does no justice for the agency. I still support Children Services 100 percent and would like to serve in a capacity that would permit me to continue to work with the agency in some way.”

ABMSP Achieves URAC Accredidation

The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry (ABMSP) has achieved full accreditation as a Credentials Verification Organization (CVO) by URAC (originally “Utilization Review Accreditation Commission”, but shortened to URAC in 1996). URAC accredits many types of healthcare organizations including hospitals, health plans, HMOs, PPOs, TPAs, and provider groups. The ABMSP is the first certification organization to be accredited by URAC..

The accreditation required ABMSP to meet URAC’s 40 core standards and 14 organizational requirements plus passing an onsite audit of its headquarters office by two URAC assessors. The American Board of Multiple Specialties in Podiatry has operated for over 26 years, providing certification for podiatrists in its four specialty examinations: Primary Care in Podiatric Medicine; Podiatric Surgery; Diabetic Foot Wounds; and Limb Preservation and Salvage.

IL Podiatrist Put Hidden Cameras in Locker Rooms, Prosecutors Say

A Skokie podiatrist accused of secretly recording community college wrestlers in a men's locker room may have dozens of other victims, authorities say. Dr. Ninos Jando, 34, was arraigned Wednesday in Michigan on three counts of capturing or distributing an image of an unclothed person. Jando was ordered held on $200,000 bond. If he makes bail, the judge has forbid him from leaving Michigan's Muskegon County.

RE: Elongated Halluces
From: Robert Chelin, BSc DPM

I would like to thank all my colleagues who offered very constructive opinions on this particular case. Though the opinions may have varied, I now have a solid plan moving forward. This type of open discussion between colleagues is what makes PM News very special and separates it from the other health professional communications. Kudos to Dr. Barry Block and PM News. Keep up the good work.

RE: Diabetic Therapeutic Shoe Bill  (David S. Chung, DPM)
From: Josh White, DPM, CPed

In the October, 2012 issue of Podiatry Management, I wrote an article titled, "Keys to Success for Fitting Diabetic Shoes:  How successful podiatric practices make the Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Program Work."

Many podiatrists have stopped fitting shoes based on the mistaken belief that it's not profitable enough and too difficult to comply with Medicare regulations. The reality is that those who continue to fit shoes are on average fitting more each year. The article shares the keys to success of practices that have figured out how to make therapeutic footwear an increasingly effective part of patient care and a significant contributor to practice profitability.

The article also addresses the reasons why podiatrists have dropped out of the Medicare shoe program and presents solutions to encourage them to get back in. It also identifies a significant opportunity that exists in most practices fitting shoes, and suggests how it can be used to help both patients and the practice.

RE: Changing Office Hours (Olga Luepschen, DPM)
From: Misty McNeill, DPM

I think there are two sides to this coin, quality of life vs. higher production. It really  depends on what you are seeking. If working Fridays makes you crazy and you want to relax, then by all means, you shouldn't work Fridays. At our 2-doctor practice, each doctor gets a 3-day weekend.

I see patients Monday and my partner Friday, then we each take the latter off. If one of our patients has an emergency, they are just seen by whoever is in. We have never had a complaint about it. We have never worked weekends (other than hospital call), as I feel having time to recharge is vital to the well-being of ourselves and our staff. I have to say I am very happy to see doctors thinking less about production and more about overall personal satisfaction.

RE: Two New Clubs Formed at NYCPM
From: Wenjay Sung, DPM

It's great to hear about the AAPSA at NYCPM. Although I'm not an alumnus of that school, it's encouraging to hear that these students are taking the initiative in reaching out to their local community. I'd love to see more of these organizations pop up at other schools (especially in California).
