On January 18, Michael J. Trepal, DPM, VP for Academic Affairs and Dean, announced that Steven Silvestro has been designated as Class Valedictorian for the Class of 2022, and that Spencer Stringham has been designated Class Salutatorian.

Fat Injections Could Treat Plantar Fasciitis: PA Podiatrist
A novel technique that transplants a patient's own fat into the sole of their foot could offer relief to those suffering from a common and painful condition called plantar fasciitis, according to University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine researchers. In a pilot study, published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and led by a wife-and-husband team, the fat injection procedure improved symptoms of plantar fasciitis in patients, laying the groundwork for a larger clinical trial. Plantar fasciitis is a common inflammatory condition, affecting more than 2 million Americans, said Beth R. Gusenoff, DPM, study co-author and wife of Jeffrey Gusenoff, MD.

To test their approach, the duo split their 14 patients into two groups. One group underwent a single fat injection before being tracked for a year; the other underwent six months of observation before getting the injection, and was then tracked for six months. Each group saw reduced plantar fascia thickness and was better able to engage in sports activity, both six and 12 months after the injection. Wenjay Sung, DPM, a Los Angeles-based podiatrist and spokesperson for the APMA, expressed enthusiasm for the study findings. "It's great to recognize newer treatments and effective approaches when dealing with a chronic condition such as heel pain," Dr. Sung said.

On January 14, 2022, Kathy Reilly Fallon, DPM of Heavenly Productions Foundation along with volunteers Fiona Murphy and Anne Reilly donated cases of water, flavored seltzer waters, pasta, sauces, rice, beans, vegetables, apple sauce, facial tissues, hand soap, towels, baby wipes, toilet paper, comforters, towels and paper towels for the families affected by the recent Bronx, NY fire.

It is Heavenly Productions Foundation’s hope that these donations will positively impact the families that were affected by one of the deadliest fires in decades that occurred on January 9, 2022.

PA Podiatrist Charged with Inappropriately Touching Female Victims
A doctor from the Foot and Ankle Wellness Center of Western Pennsylvania has been charged with two felonies for inappropriately touching female victims during routine doctor visits. Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Michael Graham said in a press release that the sex offenses occurred beginning in 2017 at the Foot and Wellness Center of Western Pennsylvania. Charged in the incident is Dr. Matthew James Sabo, age 48 of Chicora, PA.

Dr. Peacock was an extraordinary individual who was gifted in many ways and was always a pleasure to interact with. He was an inspiration for many and developed and taught surgical techniques that were far superior for patient outcomes. Don was integral in bridging the gap between open and minimally invasive surgery. He was extremely gifted technically but more importantly was a true artisan. I will miss him and so will the profession.
