INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
UK Podiatry Clinic to Donate a Day's Proceeds to Papworth Trust

A healthcare clinic is donating the cost of a day’s podiatry appointments to a disability charity. On Monday, Leah Claydon, who works as a podiatrist for BetterNOW! in High Street, Sawston, will donate proceeds for the benefit of Papworth Trust.

Leah Claydon

She said: “Papworth Trust is a fantastic local charity and I am delighted to be able to donate a day of appointments on Monday." Matthew Warren is corporate partnership fundraiser for Papworth Trust, which offers a choice of activities for disabled young people to have fun and learn new skills. He said: “We are delighted that Leah has agreed to donate her time to us. “It is lovely for a local business to support the work we do helping disabled people and their families.”

PODIATRIC INVENTORS
OR Podiatrist Creates Device to Treat Plantar Fasciosis

"Most people are unaware that the answer to plantar fasciosis is in the toes," says Ray McClanahan, DPM, sports podiatrist, founder of Northwest Foot & Ankle in Portland, Oregon, and long-time competitive distance runner. "Re-positioning the toes to the location nature intended - splayed and in line with their corresponding metatarsal bones - reduces tension on the flexor retinaculum and allows sufficient blood flow to reach the plantar fascia tissue."

Dr. Ray McClanahan and Correct Toes

McClanahan created Correct Toes, a toe-spacing device made of silicone that places toes in their normal anatomical position, helps strengthen the feet, and encourages proper blood flow to the plantar fascia, to help his patients recover.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
MI Podiatrist Charged With Theft of Elderly Patient

A Portage podiatrist is charged with taking money from a 91-year-old patient and will be going to trial. Dr. Regina Spears-Everett is accused of using the credit cards and taking money from Toni Verdries who passed away in 2011. Spears-Everett treated Verdries who was homebound and lived alone. According to court records Verdries had close to a million dollars in real estate, jewelry and savings.

Court records say in 2010, Spears-Everett helped Verdries to turn over power of attorney and also sign a new will leaving her all Verdries assets. Just four days later the documents show Spears-Everett signed a petition to commit Verdries to a psychiatric hospital. The court records say Spears-Everett maxed out Verdries’ credit cards for “personal gain.” And "during the one year in which Spears-Everett acted as power of attorney, she spent over $100,000 on personal and family items."

CCHIT Ending Testing and Certification of EHRs

The Certification Commission for Health Information Technology is getting out of the business of testing and certifying electronic health-record systems after nearly a decade as the first and still most-commonly used provider of those services in the U.S. The organization also stopped taking applications for testing and certification services from vendors Tuesday, and will finish work on about 70 of those systems it has in the pipeline and wind down that part of its operations by April or May, CCHIT Executive Director Alisa Ray said.

Today, roughly half of all health IT systems on the official Certified Health IT Product List kept by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology at HHS have been tested and certified by CCHIT.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Refurbishing Laser Heads

I am inquiring about other podiatrists' experiences with the Q Laser. I have my unit for two years and have to refurbish the head for $4,000 dollars. Is that normal?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Allan S. Wax, DPM

I use many of these staples, and I had not had any real reactions on patients for years, but oddly, last week, I pulled an MMI staple out of a patient who was approximately six months post-op. The patient felt odd diffuse pain in the foot. There was no relief with typical conservative care such as NSAID meds. Over the years, I have seen other patients get this diffuse odd pain with some other screws. Those screws were removed, and a day later, the diffuse pain cleared up as well, so this staple pain seemed in line with the other folks. I pulled the staple out last week and saw the patient this past Friday. She reported the pain gone.

So, It appears that even folks who don’t have a documented nickel allergy still can have some odd metal allergy to the hardware.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Al Musella, DPM

Dr. Jules Shangold would be turning in his grave if he read this thread. He was a teacher at NYCPM in the 1980s, and he taught us practice management. He said that routine foot care patients are the lifeblood of your practice. They come in for routine care, and stay with you for decades. You get their kids and friends, and you always remind them of the other services you do. This way they know when someone needs anything done on the foot that you are the person who can do it. And over the years, they all develop other problems.

As to moving RFC patients to a 90-days schedule, if they can wait 90 days, they do not need your care. The ones who need it the most can't wait 61 days. Consider hiring another podiatrist who likes to do routine foot care to take care of your routine foot care patients. I hear from many podiatrists who say their offices are slow and they do not have enough patients. Advertise on PM News for an associate to work for you. Forget about hiring a new graduate with a 3-year residency; they are not going to be interested in routine care.

Be firm on the Medicare rules. If they do not qualify for routine care, or need care more frequently than 61 days, charge them your regular fees. Never stretch the rules to make them covered. It leads to a stress-free life.

Al Musella, DPM, Hewlett, NY, musella@aol.com
