TN Podiatrist Discusses Blister Prevention and Treatment
“The best way to prevent blisters is to take steps to stop any rubbing or friction from converting an area of irritation to a full-blown blister,” says Christopher Hood, DPM. It's best not to pop a blister. If you must pop, Dr. Hood recommends first cleaning the area with antiseptic and using a sterile instrument to drain the fluid. Anyone whose immune system is compromised should skip popping on their own. “One hint when deciding where to place the hole in the blister is to perform this at the ‘bottom,’ or lowest part, of the blister so that gravity will allow it to continue to drain,” says Dr. Hood.
|
Dr. Christopher Hood |
“For example, if you have a blister on the back of your heel, place the hole at the six o’clock position so that while you’re standing all day the fluid will run and exit the bottom, versus placing it at the twelve o’clock position, where it would not be able to drain and the fluid would re-collect in the bottom portion.” Dab on a little antibiotic cream like Neosporin to avoid infection, and then cover the blister on your foot with a bandage. If you notice signs of infection, like if the area becomes red, hot, or swollen, or if you see pus, call your doctor or podiatrist, Dr. Hood says.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
NY Podiatrists' Shoe Drive is Most Successful Ever
Over 1,300 pairs of lightly worn and new shoes were collected during the 4th annual “Shoes For The Homeless” event that took place between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day by the doctors and staff of Country Foot Care. Donations were made in clinical practices and the business office and in various locations in the towns of Mineola and Williston Park. Steven Brook, DPM, the founder of Country Foot Care stated, “this year’s shoe drive was by far our most successful.

David Rogers, Senior Vice Commander VFW Post 2913 and Dr. Steven Brook |
The shoes will be distributed throughout the VFWs on Long Island by the VFW Post 2913 in Patchogue, and by the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island.

PODIATRISTS AND THE HOLOCAUST |
IN Podiatrist Returns to Auschwitz to Honor His Mother
Alex Kor has been writing letters to heaven. Since his mother, Holocaust survivor Eva Mozes Kor, died during an annual trip to Poland last summer, he has jotted down the things he wishes she could see; the things he wishes he could tell her; the questions he wishes he could ask her. How do I channel my pain that this loss has produced? For much of her life, Eva fought to share her family's story. Now, it's Alex's turn.
|
Dr. Alex Kor and Eva Mozes Kor |
This week, the 58-year-old returned to Poland with a group from his mother's Terre Haute-based CANDLES museum and as part of a delegation of survivors assembled by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Foundation. There, he'll commemorate the 75th anniversary of the camp's liberation by Soviet soldiers. It's far from his first trip to Auschwitz — in all, he estimates he has been there at least 20 times. But this time, Alex Kor will stand on the selection platform in his mother's place.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
7 Ways to Take Back Uncompensated Time - Part 5
Physicians spend a significant amount of their workdays—probably 20% or more—on uncompensated tasks thanks to a barrage of regulatory requirements, says Joseph Valenti, MD, a board member of the Physicians Foundation, a non-profit physician advocacy group. “This equates to at least $50,000 of lost revenue per physician annually,” he says. Here are some tips from board members on reducing the amount of uncompensated time you spend in your practice:
5. Be flexible with EHR documentation methods.

CODINGLINE CORNER |
Query: Diabetic Shoe Dispensing with Ulceration
Are diabetic shoes and inserts able to be dispensed to patients regardless of whether they have an open ulceration?
Gary Raymond, DPM, Altoona, PA
Response: As long as you abide by the current CMS DMERC policy on prescribing and dispensing diabetic therapeutic shoes, then you should have no problem in this case scenario situation. I would use whatever root ICD-10 diagnosis codes pertaining to the type of diabetes; Type 1 or 2 (E08, E10 or E11). And then, be sure to indicate the ulcer depth that is present and laterality with respect to following 4-6 numeral positions. See the ICD-10 manual or the CRC APMA online portal for the aforementioned details.
Also, you will need to link the ulcer ICD root code L97 with the following numeral position 4-6, indicating laterality, anatomical placement, and type of ulcer.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Pose Method Running
I have a new patient with forefoot pain who believes that the normal running form excludes heel strike. I learned about the Pose method from a high school coach about 10 years ago but do not know if it is still in vogue. Since one is landing on the forefoot, are we seeing more forefoot injuries with this style? Is more flexibility or rigidity needed in their running shoes?
George Jacobson, DPM, Hollywood, FL

From: Simon Young, DPM
Who cares? This is entertainment. Dr. Schaeffer is a much more handsome practitioner than me and has a good TV presence, as does the woman practitioner who, by the way, is very pretty. It’s great professional advertisement for our profession. The general public likes to see gross pathology corrected and a happy ending.
Only thing I would ask is that they provide accurate information and do procedures by accepted medical techniques. Recently, a patient had an issue with onychomycosis. The nail was avulsed and was treated with laser, but was never sent for PAS. But what if it tested negative? Although laser is FDA-approved for onychomycosis, the literature does not back these findings. He should have discussed treatment options and chosen a treatment with correct medically-accepted information.
Simon Young, DPM, NY, NY
