PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS |
WI Podiatrist is Founder of Surgical Instrument Company
Sometimes the best inventions are born of frustration. Such was the case with Wauwatosa-based RELJA Innovations LLC, a company founded by board-certified foot and ankle surgeon Rob Amiot, DPM. Having performed more than 1,500 bunion procedures, Dr. Amiot noticed a troubling trend among his patients—many were experiencing prolonged pain and stiffness after undergoing correction surgery. He attributed the protracted suffering to some of the archaic techniques still being employed and realized these procedures had begotten a stigma about the significant pain and long recovery time associated with bunion surgery.
|
Dr. Rob Amiot |
In the four years since its founding, Dr. Amiot's company has introduced four products to the market, manufactured at production sites in Indiana, Texas, and Wisconsin. Among those solutions is the MIS Precision Chevron Bunion System, a product that allows surgeons to minimally invasively perform a mild to moderate chevron bunion osteotomy, and subsequent osteotomy fixation. The system consists of a single pre-sterilized part number that contains both implants and instruments needed for the procedure. The same kit can be used for left or right feet, and on any size foot. Fixation is achieved by a 3.5 mm diameter cannulated screw, precisely placed by the system instrumentation. Two screw lengths are provided that were shown to provide adequate fixation on any size foot.

FL Podiatrist Settles for Employing Receptionist on HHS-OIG Exclusions List
Individuals and organizations are regularly added to the HHS-OIG Exclusions List, and there are harsh penalties for engaging with or employing an excluded individual or organization. Adriana Strimbu, DPM, in Florida, employed a receptionist on the HHS-OIG exclusions list, resulting in products or services being billed to Medicare or Medicaid. The alleged violation was settled for $41,739.66.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
10 Small Ways to Provide Great Customer Service to Patients
Providing great customer service to patients will make them feel like you are all on the same team, they will be more apt to send referrals, and they will be more willing to make sure you are paid for the time and effort you have spent on their care. Here are 10 ways to provide excellent service to your patients outside of the exam room:
4. Provide solid training.
Great customer service isn’t all common sense, or there would be more of it. My clients find it beneficial to provide their staff with industry-specific customer service training and follow-up renewal training as needed.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
RE: Questions for the APMA
From: Brent L Rubin, DPM
I have never written anything on this site that is political in nature. However, I believe the time has come for the APMA to respond to many of the concerns of its members.
1. Why do we need so many podiatry schools? The number of applicants continues to decline, and we are having issues with the quality of the applicants.
2. Board certification. It seems we cannot come to any agreement on the future.
3. MD/DPM degrees, it appears our profession is in limbo. Reduced reimbursement as well as competition from non-physician providers.
4. Why did the APMA get involved in the DEI movement? This is divisive to our profession. Most major medical organizations and corporations as well as our government have begun to dismantle these projects.
I read our monthly APMA News and never see anything pertaining to the above topics. I believe these are far more important than many of the issues promoted in the APMA News.
Brent L Rubin, DPM, Lakewood Ranch, FL

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 |
From: Mark Hinkes, DPM
I just read Dr. Solomon's comments on the issue of low enrollment in podiatry schools. As I read his post, it was clearly evident that he was suggesting the what and how about podiatry as a profession. He states, "it is because pre-medical students either do not know that we are an option, or they are not confident in the ability to have a fruitful career as a podiatric physician or surgeon."
But he failed to elucidate the "Why" concerning low enrollment. If the profession/schools are to prosper, the issue of "Why" a student should enroll in podiatry schools must be developed and shared with prospective students.... What is podiatry's "Why". Perhaps because podiatrists are the best providers of foot health services and have an armamentarium to deliver that care for the patient. If the prospective student agrees with this, we will have a seat filled in one of the colleges.
Podiatry needs to deliver the "Why" to prospective students so as to be in line with the prospective students' belief as to why podiatry is the best choice for them.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE ADVANTAGE) |
RE: More MCR Plans Violate the Law
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
Here we go again, with MCR "Adv" plans and Now MCR Part D plans committing fraud. From the OIG: Commonwealth Care Alliance, Inc. (CCA) has agreed to pay $520,355.65 to resolve allegations that Reliance HMO, Inc., a company CCA acquired in 2022, violated the False Claims Act, 31 U.S.C. §§ 3729-3733, by providing cash payments to induce the referral of Medicare beneficiaries to enroll in Reliance’s Medicare Advantage Plan.
From a recent Becker’s:
• Centene was fined $2 million for violating Part C requirements by charging enrollees more
than the annual maximum out-of-pocket limits, potentially increasing their...
