VA Podiatrist is Dedicated Serial Griller
For an ambitious serial griller like Dr. Joseph Smith, the start date seemed lackluster and late. Yet there it is, documented in a beat-up pocket calendar in the doctor's scrawl: "January 14, burgers." Then three days later, on Jan. 17, Smith got his game on: filet mignon, poblanos, shrimp-on-a-stick, burgers. On Jan. 22, he pulled on snowboarding boots, trudged to the grill through 4 inches of the white stuff and dished his family a spread of burgers, brats, and dogs.

By Super Bowl Sunday 2014, Smith had made serious gains toward his goal of grilling out 100 times in a single year, weather be damned. Smith, a podiatrist, surfer, snowboarder, thrash metal band aficionado, and father of five, started grilling while in the Army, where he served as a combat medic. Some of his buddies would fill a 5-gallon pickle barrel with soy and teriyaki sauce and chicken, "and let it soak and then we'd grill it on the weekends."

Study co-principal investigator Vickie Driver, MS, DPM, FACFAS, is Professor of Orthopedic Surgery Brown University School of Medicine (clinical), Section Chief, Podiatric Surgery Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Rhode Island, and Director of Research at Rhode Island Hospital's Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine. She explains, "The lack of quality clinical evidence in wound care is a problem. The IN-BALANCE trial not only provides us the clinical evidence we need to select effective treatments for nonresponding venous leg ulcers, but provides us a road map on how wound care clinical studies should be conducted in the future."

Bactrim Can Cause Sudden Death
Now and again, a study comes along that changes how healthcare professionals think about prescribing. Recently, research released by the British Medical Journal implicated trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole as a cause for increased risk of sudden death in specific populations. This particular study gathered data for more than 17 years, from 1994 through 2012, and included patients aged 66 years or older who were being treated with either an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) and then suddenly died within 7 or 14 days of starting treatment as an outpatient with an oral antibiotic.
Of the more than 1.5 million patients included in the study, nearly 40,000 died suddenly after beginning oral antibiotic treatment. The results showed that, in this specific patient population, 3 of every 1,000 individuals taking either ACE inhibitors or ARBs who then begin treatment with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole will die suddenly within 7 to 14 days. Those results are significant when compared with the control cohort, which recorded only 1 sudden death per 1.000 patients.

House GOP to Hold First ObamaCare Repeal Vote of New Congress
In control of Congress for the first time in eight years, Republicans are set to hold their first vote to repeal ObamaCare next week, Fox News has learned. The vote comes as Republicans have debated how to address the controversial healthcare bill. GOP lawmakers are facing rising pressure from conservative groups and activists to go big in their efforts to dismantle the law, but the party is stuck in an internal debate over how far they can go, and whether undoing it piecemeal is a preferable course of action.
Party strategists have questioned whether aiming for full repeal is worth the effort, when President Obama would surely use his veto. “Republicans should not, again, go down the road of full repeal for ObamaCare when they know the president’s not going to have an epiphany and say, ‘You know what? I screwed up. Yeah, let’s repeal my legacy legislation,’” Republican strategist Brad Blakeman told FoxNews.com.

7 Ways Docs Can Attract Patients on Facebook - Part 6
6. Use low-friction conversion pages
If you are driving traffic to your website appointments, downloads, or any other actions, you need to make sure the page you're sending them to is conversion-friendly. What this means is: make it as easy as possible for them to take the desired action.
If you want them to make an appointment, put an appointment form front-and-center. If you want them to call in, make sure your phone number is on the page, and clickable.

Source: Source for Ketoprofen
We are running into a problem with ordering phonophoresis at physical therapy clinics. They are stating that we have to order the topical medication, and the patient has to pick it up and bring it with them. We cannot find a pharmacy to get this mediation, Ketoprofen. Does anyone else have this issue?

RE: Unethical Behavior
From: Charles Morelli, DPM
This past weekend, I attended my 24th clinical conference sponsored by the New York State Podiatric Medical Association. I have never felt the need to respond to some of what was said during the final “round table” moderated by Dr. Allen Jacobs. On the dais were Dr. Trepal and Mr. Andrew Feldman, Esq.
Mr. Feldman, as always, was clear and succinct and I appreciated all that he had to say and how it was presented. When the conversation was steered towards “ethical behavior” by a podiatrist, that is when I started to get uncomfortable and a bit annoyed by some of the...

RE: Medicare Now Paying for Orthotics?
From: David T. Weiss, DPM
I have had Medicare patients tell me that they want to get a pair of orthotics because a friend or family member said “Medicare Covers Them.” After hearing that phrase erroneously a million times over the years, I billed my local carrier L3020RT & L3020LT because my patient insisted. Low and behold, they were covered; with a diagnosis of plantar fasciitis, exostosis, or enthesiopathy. These patients are not diabetic. They have no PVD, and no neuropathy.
What’s going on here? Did hackers get into the Government Medicare software?
